I. Welcome – K. Turp

Tammy Coulson - Chair, opened the meeting at 6:00 pm

She welcomed Carla Pereira – Manager, Communications Department. Carla gave a presentation on the role of school council members – 30 minutes

II. Principal’s Report – K. Turp – 10 minutes

Homework Policy – Homework assignments are not marked by the teacher. Firstly, there is no way to know who has completed the work. Work done in class is monitored by the teacher. The Board is currently updating the Homework policy so we are going to wait to see what the Board’s directive is before we review our school policy.

Babysitting at School Council Meetings – babysitters are high school students not teaching staff. Their main purpose is to make sure students are safe.

Playground Painting – we are using funds raised from our Pizza Day. This has been organized and will be done this spring. We will be sending a Synervoice message when its complete for students and parents to come and have a look. The company who has done the painting will be training some grade 4 students on how to play the games.

III. Teacher’s Report – R. Mistry & M. Macpherson

Update on Spring Art Show/Concert – This will be held on June 19th – Rehearsal will be on June 17th. First there will be “Art in the Park” students will be showcasing their art. This will be followed by a Talent Show. Mr. Macpherson asked parents for volunteers for June 17th and 18th to help set-up. Volunteer names will be gathered at the next meeting.

Asian Heritage Month – we will be having a performance at the school on May 1st (information was sent home in the April Newsletter). There will also be a small number of students going to the Board office for an Asian Heritage Presentation

Math Night – Date to be Determined. Helping children with math.

Excellence in Eloquence – Nahani Way will be hosting a regional Grade 4 and 5 public speaking final on the evening of April 30th, 2015.

Library – Kathryn Turp explained the revitalization of the school library making it a Library Learning Commons. The implementation will be done in phases, using both fundraising money and board money and a donation made from the Superintendent of Education. We are in the process of completing phase one with the purchase of furniture and technology.

Increasing Parent Involvement – this doesn’t need to be on the agenda each time. This is something we always strive for by spreading the word around the community.

IV. General Topic Discussion

K. Turp (Principal) asked the school council members if we could start our next meeting on May 21st at 5:00 pm in order to accommodate Welcome to Kindergarten. Everyone was in agreement.

K. Turp (Principal) asked if parents wanted to discuss the health curriculum at the next meeting. Everyone was in agreement.
