Sunday Showdown with the UnionMinnesota United returns home on Sunday to take on the Philadelphia Union for its third-annual Pride game. The game caps off a stretch of five games in the last 15 days for the Loons, whose depth has been put to the test during that time. MNUFC welcomes the return of Romain Metanire after serving a one-game suspension as it looks to continue its stellar home form against a Union side that is winless in its last three games. Philadelphia’s recent homestand saw them take just two out of nine possible points, scoring just twice. Now the Union must try to get a result at Allianz Field, where away goals have been hard to come by. Frustrated by its lack of offensive production, the Loons will want to use this game to kickstart their attackers in front of the home crowd.
Winning Ways Come to an End on the RoadMinnesota United’s shutout streak came to an end on Wednesday night with a 3-0 loss to Atlanta United. The home side got on the board first with a goal from Franco Escobar in the 23rd minute. Momentum swung back to the Loons following the slow start, and they began to press Atlanta and hold off their dangerous set of attackers. MNUFC nearly leveled the score in the 75th minute, with a flurry of shots that were cleared off the goal line by the Atlanta defenders. After the officials elected not to check video review, the wind left the Loons’ sails late in the game and the tide turned back to the home side. Josef Martinez put the game to bed with a pair of stoppage time goals to hand Minnesota its third-straight road loss.

MNUFC GAME NOTES
2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES
Romain Metanire and Brent Kallman Named to Team of the WeekFor the second time this season, MNUFC will have players feature in back-to-back MLS Teams of the Week. Romain Metanire takes a spot in the Week 13 lineup and Brent Kallman features on the bench.
Metanire makes his fourth appearance of the season in the Team of the Week, and first set of consecutive appearances, last earning a spot in Week 12. The Madagascar international scored his first MLS goal, and eventual game-winner, in the Loons’ win over Houston Dynamo last weekend. He played a major role in keeping the fifth clean sheet of the season, tying the club’s single-season MLS record.
Kallman makes his first appearance on a Team of the Week in 2019. He shut down the middle of the field for MNUFC, preventing Houston from getting any easy chances in the 1-0 result at Allianz Field. The Woodbury native made four headed clearances and a key interception defensively. He also acted as a distribution hub, connecting nine long balls and 14 passes in the Dynamo half, three of which were in the offensive third.
Adrian Heath on Getting Results in this Compressed Stretch of Games“The most important thing is that everybody has to step up when they’re counted. It’s gonna be one of them again [against Sporting Kansas City in the U.S. Open Cup]. It’s a big game for us on Sunday against Philly. Their last two games have not been what they would have liked, just taking one point out of two games at home, but they’ve been top of the East three or four weeks of the year? They’ve had a really good start, they’ve taken maybe three or four years to put this group together and it’s probably the best group that Jim [Curtin]’s had since he’s been the coach. We know they’re coming in here with a lot of weapons. We’re going to have to play well this weekend, like we did last weekend against the Dynamo.”
Heath on Allianz Field Becoming a Fortress for the Team“I don’t think it’s just us. If you look at this league, more than most teams in most leagues in Europe, most of the teams pick up points at home. It’s notoriously difficult to win on the road. You look at our record, even when we were in TCF Bank [Stadium] and it wasn’t our own home, but that was where we got most of our points. I expect the same at this place. It’s been fantastic for us since we got there. Our support has been incredible within the stadium. We need to keep that buzz in the stadium and as I’ve said to the players, the onus is on us to create that excitement by the way that we play, by the way we go about trying to win the game, by playing in the opposing half. Opportunities, crosses, get the ball in the box. Keep the crowd excited. If we do that, I believe we can win most games at home.”
Ike Opara on the Score in Atlanta not Reflecting the Game Itself“Really I wanted to win the game, let’s be clear there, but if it had been 1-0, there were a lot of things we did well, and obviously things we could have done better. But then to have collapsed in stoppage time, you lose 3-0, you kind of go home feeling like the world’s ending and only seeing negatives from that game, where I think there were some positives. You build off of that, keep it in perspective and I think everyone in this team should learn from what we experienced and myself included.”
Opara on Facing Philadelphia“They’re a little unpredictable in their attack, and that’s a good thing, I think because you don’t know where the source of their goal is coming from; whether it’s the nine, or the six or their winger, their set pieces and that makes it tough to defend a team that don’t necessarily have a focus on, or focal point in their attack. Jim Curtin has done a really good job with that team, and defensively they’re pretty sound – they’ve got a lot young talent and more vertical this year than years past, and they press so it’s going to be a challenge for us. We’ve had a couple challenges this week, or in the past seven days and I think we finish off the Philly game and look back and see what we’ve done well, I think is going to be important for us.”
MIN vs. ATL RecapMinnesota United traveled south for its first game of the week against Atlanta United in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. With some lineup shuffling, the Loons were hoping to sneak a tight victory over the reigning champs and played a tough, hard-nosed game up until stoppage time when they gave away two goals to go with Atlanta’s first — scored in the 20th minute — to give the home side a 3-0 victory.
“I thought we executed the plan really well apart from the last two goals,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We were still right in the game. We stifled them, they hadn’t created an awful lot of chances against us and I thought we looked dangerous in the second half. You look at the scoreline and the scoreline looks 3-0 and like you’ve been well and truly beaten, but that was far from the case. I thought we were the more likely to get the next goal when they were winning 1-0. Poor goals from us, really bad mistakes and I don’t think that we troubled them enough going forward.”
Celebrating Pride All MonthMajor League Soccer and Minnesota United have announced the launch of the second annual Soccer For All Month. While the commitment to Soccer For All is ongoing, Soccer For All month showcases the collective efforts taking place throughout the League to foster more inclusive communities.
MLS clubs will conduct various activities in their local communities now through June 30 to support Soccer For All month including: Special Olympics Unified Sports® Soccer Exchange Matches presented by MLS WORKS and ESPN, anti-bullying programming, girls and women leadership events, LGBTQ Pride Nights and parades, health and wellness activities, as well as soccer clinics and events for homeless youth, power soccer teams (soccer teams for power wheelchair users), displaced individuals and youth from underserved communities. Minnesota United hosts its Pride Game on June 2 against the Philadelphia Union at Allianz Field.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
