THE TWINS: The Twins completed their final homestand with a record of 5-4, going 2-1 against Detroit, 1-2 against Cleveland and 2-1 against Arizona...tonight they begin their final road trip of 2014 with four against the Tigers. HUGHES, SO HUGE: The Twins beat the Diamondbacks yesterday afternoon by a score of 2-1, winning the series two games to one, making them 19-26-6 in series play this season...the Twins completed their home portion of the schedule with a record of 35-46, winning their final home game for the first time since 2011...Phil Hughes (16-10) was the starter and winner, allowing one run on five hits in 8.0 innings pitched with no walks and five strikeouts...the offense recorded just four hits, which marked their third win this season when getting four hits...Trevor Plouffe fractured his left forearm when A.J. Pollack slid into his wrist at third base, and will miss the final series with Detroit. ELIAS SAYS...: Hughes is 16-10 in his first season with the Twins after going 4-14 with the Yankees last season...he is the fourth pitcher in major league history to follow a season with four-or-fewer wins with 16-plus wins the following season (minimum of 25 starts each season)...the others to do that were Frank Mountain (26-33 in 1883, 4-21 in 1882), Jerry Koosman (20-13 in 1979, 3-15 in 1978) and Matt Keough (16-13 in 1980, 2-17 in 1979)... Koosman did it under similar circumstances to Hughes: his three win season in 1978 came with New York-NL and then after being traded to the Twins in the offseason, he went on to win 20 games in his first season in Minnesota in 1979. If Wednesday was Hughes’ final appearance of the season, he will have finished the year with 16 wins and only 16 walks allowed...only three pitchers in the modern era registered as many or more wins as walks while winning at least 15 games: Christy Mathewson did it twice (25 wins, 21 walks in 1913 and 24 wins, 23 walks in 1914) and Slim Sallee (21 wins, 20 walks in 1919). Hughes finished the regular season with a 11.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio, setting the MLB record among qualifying pitchers. EARNING THEIR STRIPES: The Twins are 8-7 against the Tigers this season...a win would be their most against Detroit in a season since 2010, when they went 9-9...three wins in this series would be their most since going 12-7 in 2009...the Twins won their last two against Detroit (September 16-17) and are seeking their first three-game win-streak against the Tigers since September 23 (DH) & 28, 2012. The Twins have out-scored the Tigers 94-88 this season...the Twins 6.27 runs-per-game are their most against any AL opponent...that ratio is their highest against Detroit since 2001 (6.37) and tied for third highest for the Twins against Detroit in their history (7.67 in 1996), 6.37 in 2001 and 6.27 in 1997)...it’s the Twins highest against any AL opponent in one season since 2010, 7.22 vs. Kansas City. The last team to score at least 94 runs off the Tigers in one season was Minnesota in 2009, scoring 113 (also last time a team scored 100-plus vs. Detroit)...the Twins scored just 61 runs against the Tigers last season. In their last seven games against Detroit, the Twins are hitting .341 (89-for-261) with 24 doubles, a .410 on-base percentage and 60 runs scored. AT COMERICA: The Twins are 3-3 at Comerica Park this season, losing their last series here June 13-15 (1-2) and winning their first May 9-11 (2-1)...one win would match their 2013 win total here (4-6)...this season at Comerica, Eduardo Escobar is 8-for-18 (.444) with four doubles, Chris Parmelee is 5-for-14 (.357) and Brian Dozier is 5-for-16 (.313) with two home runs. TWINS ROOKIE RANKS: Danny Santana has 123 hits, the most for a Twins rookie since Luis Rivas had 150 in 2001...his 26 doubles are most since Marty Cordova had 27 in 1995...his 40 extra-base hits are most since Cordova had 55 in 1995...seven triples are most since John Castino had eight in 1979...his .319 average is highest since Tony Oliva hit .323 in 1964 (minimum 400 plate appearances)...additionally, Santana has hit safely in seven straight against Detroit — all multi-hit games, hitting .485 (16-for-33) with three doubles, three triples, eight RBI and 11 runs scored in those seven. ROCKY ROAD: The Twins are 33-44 on the road this season...their last road series win was August 11-13 at Houston (3 games)...one win will match their 2013 road win total (34-47), two wins will match their 2012 total (35-46), three wins will be most since going 41-40 in 2010...Oswaldo Arcia has a six-game road hitting streak, hitting .450 (9-for-20); he is hitting .313 (21-for-67) in his last 18 road games...Danny Santana is hitting .349 (30-for-86) in his last 21 road games.
