Minnesota State has established a pipeline to the Boze-man, Mont. area as sophomore 125-lb David Demo joins fel-low Maverick Tel Todd on this year's squad. Although only a sophomore, Demo has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Confer-ence. Demo has continued to put the time in and is peaking at the right time as he was recognized as the NSIC Wrestler of the Week in the last week of the regular season. Demo went 2-0 and defeated the nation's seventh-ranked wrestler, Dylan Wright from St. Cloud State. Demo has also had his struggles this season, falling to the top two nationally-ranked wrestlers in the 125-lb weight class, Kyle Pedretti (Upper Iowa) on January 26 in a 9-5 deci-sion and Cory Ulmer (MSU-Moorhead) on Febrary 2 in a 7-1 decision. Through it all Demo stayed focused on the ultimate goal and in the true fourth-place match at regionals, he de-feated Chris Paulus (Upper Iowa) 4-3 to punch his ticket to the NCAA Tournament. A few more words from David Demo: "I'm going down there to be an All-American. We are coming out of the toughest region, so I expect nationals to be very sim-ilar. I'm going in with the mentality that every match counts."

"As a team it was a rough year for us, but getting Jim (Mak-ovsky) his 250th career win felt good. Heading into the season we had a good team on paper, but with a few unlucky breaks we ended up with a mediocre record.

"Being named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week was never a goal of mine. I just go out there every match and give everything I have."

Makovsky on Demo:

"I have seen David devolop not only as a wreslter, but also as a man. I am extremely proud of him. He had a great mentor in Andy Forstner for two years. He was able to train with him and Andy really showed him the way and what it takes. David has seen some of the best competition out there in his weight class and he will not be intimidated going down there."

Cody Quinn, a Bozeman, Mont. native, is not your typical freshman. Quinn, 21-years-old, spent a year at Montana State University strictly as a student before making the connection to Minnesota State. Quinn was in contact with David Demo and Tel Todd's high school coach at Bozeman High School. It was then that Nate Laslovick put Quinn in touch with head coach Jim Makovsky.

A few more words from Cody Quinn:

"My goal all along was to qualify for nationals. Now that I have done that, I'm going down there to take care of business and become an All-American."

"I really haven't talked much with the guys about what to ex-pect at nationals. I will be seeing a No. 1 seed from a different region, but I am not going to be intimidated because we have competed against the best competition all year long."

"Going to nationals gives me another chance to go all out for two days."

Makovsky on Quinn:

"Cody had a good first year. Midway through the season he was hampered with an injury and he got frustrated. In the end, he survived it all and I am extremely proud of him."

"I expect him and David both to go in with a mindset of win-ning a national title. It is better to aim high and miss then aim low and hit."

"In the long run I want Cody to be able to look back and know that he gave everything he had. He made it through regionals which is the first bar. Even though he is a freshman I expect nothing less of him. I expect him to still be wrestling on day two and competing to be an All-American."

2011-12 MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING 2011-12 Minnesota State Year In ReviewBy: Cole Kukowski

Minnesota State prepares to send a duo of underclassmen to the NCAA Division II National Championship March 9-10. Sophomore David Demo (125-lbs.) and freshman Cody Quinn (165-lbs.) will represent to Mavericks at the national champi-onship. MSU finished with a 5-9 dual record this season, but ended the season on a high note at they defeated Southwest Minnesota State in its regular season finale 23-15 to give head coach Jim Makovsky his 250th career win.

Earning my 250th win gave me an opportunity to reflect,” Makovsky said. "I am greatful for everyone associated with Maverick wrestling. I have had great assistant coaches, support from the alumni and above all else ex-tremely talented athletes."

The Mavericks finished in ninth-place in Super Region 3 in St, Cloud, Minn., February 26. Quinn finished in fourth place while Demo finished in fifth place but battled back in the true fourth place match to punch his ticket to na-tionals.

Demo currently owns a 26-11 record. Demo's 26 wins is the second most on the team, trailing only senior 157-lb Tel Todd who finished the year with 29 wins. Demo was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week for his 2-0 per-formance in the last week of the regular season. Demo's week was highlight by his defeat of No. 7 ranked Dylan Wright of St. Cloud State.

This was the second consecutive week that a Maverick won the award, as 149-lb Jesse Westphal was named the Wrestler of the Week after going 2-0, including an upset of the No. 2 ranked Trevor Johnson of U-Mary. West-

Minnesota State's David Demo and Cody Quinn will both be making their first appearance at nationals. As un-derclassmen, the duo hope to make an impression is their debut.

phal's upset was sparked by an escape early in the second period followed by a three-point near fall. Westphal also defeated Gavin Larsen of Northern State 7-2 earlier that week.

Although both underclassmen, Quinn and Demo both are looking to leave an impression and represent Minnesota State.

"We are not going down there just to be there. Cody and David are going down there to win a national champion-ship," Makovsky said. "We have a proud tradition here at MSU and only taking two guys to nationals isn't accept-able. We have learned a lot about ourselves this season and I love this group of guys.

After going 2-2 at regionals, Quinn now holds a 20-8 re-cord. Quinn's season was highlighted by going 3-0 at the Jim Fox Open, including a 4-2 defeat of Nic Finkebinder (Harper) in the championship match.

“My goal all along was to make it to nationals,” Quinn said. "Now that I have accomplished that I am going down there to become an All-American."

Makovsky went on to add that, "Pueblo puts on a great tournament and there will be an incredible atmosphere there. We haven't been down there in a few years, but I am excited for my guys to experience that incredible environment.
