Minnehaha Academy knows how to make an entrance.

Three games into the season, the defending Class 2A state champions took down three of the top six Class 4A teams — including No. 1 Apple Valley on national television—be-fore finally falling to another ranked 4A team, Eden Prairie.

“I had the feeling going into this season that we had the potential to beat any one of the first three (opponents), but it would be tough to beat all three,” said coach Lance John-son, after the third game.

The Redhawks, loaded with college-calibre talent, opened with a 60-58 victory over No. 6 East Ridge on Dec. 2. They tripped Apple Valley 82-79 on Thursday, Dec. 7, and rallied to beat No. 3 Park Center 61-55 last Saturday at the Break-down Tip-Off — all on the road, as this marvelous team has no home gym this year.

“I felt as though we could have played much better the first and third games,” Johnson assessed. “The second game vs. Apple Valley on ESPNU, we played an excel-lent game all around.”Jalen Suggs is

Minnehaha’s soph floor leader.

Minnehaha: no home games for talented teamContinued on Page 2

Eden Prairie, ranked No. 8, foiled the Redhawks 71-48 on Tuesday. “I think we might have caught them on an off-night,” coach David Flom said. “We had good energy and they never really matched it.” More on that game later.

Minnehaha Academy vs. Apple Valley was a grand showcase of Minnesota prep basketball and two of the best point guards in the nation, witnessed by the national audience on ESPNU and a jam-packed, celebrity-stud-ded crowd at Apple Valley.

Tre Jones, Apple Valley’s leader of two state champion teams and a Duke recruit, was at his soaring best with 39 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, although he missed his final shot, a three-pointer to tie with 10 sec-onds left that hit the back rim.

Minneahaha Academy’s sophomore sensation Jalen Suggs had more modest numbers with 16 points, 14 rebounds and five assists, but the Redhawks also had JaVonni Bickman (Denver recruit) with 25 points and nine rebounds, and another Suggs’ sophomore class-mate Terry Lockett with 14 points and five assists.

The crowd included Tyus Jones of the Timberwolves (former Apple Valley and Duke star), Gophers Amir Coffey and Isaiah Washington, and Paige Bueckers of Hopkins, the state’s top girl player.

Against Park Center two days later, the Redhawks quickly fell behind 19-3, but, with Suggs scoring 25 points, including a three-point play for their first lead at 49-48, they pulled it out 61-55. Lockett added 11 points and Kaden Johnson 10. Park Center was carried by Ja-rius Cook with 23 points. Dain Dainja was next with eight points.

“We did have a hangover from Thursday night, and Park

Center was hot,” Johnson said. “We did settle in a play decently the last fourth of the game.”

Eden Prairie, in toppling the Redhawks, had deadly three-point shooting (12-for-24), five double-digit scorers and judi-cious passing (24 assists). Justin Henry scored 17 points, Drake Dobbs 15 (nine assists), DJ John-son 12, Austin Andrews 12 (10 rebounds) and Kyler Kluge 11 (seven assists). Beckman had 20 for the Redhawks with Lockett adding 11 and Suggs held to 10.

Johnson said his program is built with a “philosophy and goal to have teams … capable of competing with a 4A type schedule.” Last year the Redhawks had 1-3 start against that type of schedule but vaulted to the Class 2A favorite’s role with an 86-75 conquest of pe-rennial 4A power Hopkins on Dec. 30. Ranked first the rest of the year, they finished 26-5, capped by a 47-36 win over Crosby-Ironton in the state finals. And they bring back five starters from that team.

The Redhawks also have highly-ranked Orono, Minne-apolis North, Austin, Columbia Heights and Caledonia on the schedule. “Really adventurous,” the coach said about the schedule, “when you compound it with the fact that we do not have a home gym or base this sea-son.”

The tragic gas-leak explosion in August that killed two school employees rendered the Minnehaha gym unus-able for the year, the floor destroyed by a water pipe leak.

“St. Thomas Academy and the Air Force-Navy-Ma-rine-Army Reserve Base have been incredible support-ers,” Johnson said. “Those two venues are where we practice and play games. Support for our program has been strong.”

Park Center’s Tommy Chatman (12) was guarded by Minnehaha Acad-

emy’s Lorenzo Smith.

By Bruce Strand

In the late 1960’s, Edina rumbled to three consecutive state championships in the old one-class system when everybody in the state was watching. It was one of the most riveting dynasties in Minnesota sports history.

In the half-century since, the Hornets have reached state only three more times, and didn’t win another state tournament game until 2013, when they placed third. They’ve had good but not great teams.

Certainly, no Hornet team has been top-ranked, or close to it, since the “Edinasty” of 1966-67-68.

Until now.

This week, Edina vaults all the way from No. 11 to number one. The Hornets left the Minnesota Basketball News no choice by upending the two teams regarded as the class of the state, Cretin Derham Hall and defend-ing champion Apple Valley, back-to-back.

“We have smart, coachable players that are playing such selfless basketball right now,” coach Joe Burger said. “We’re moving the ball, not caring who takes the shot, and that’s really difficult for teams to guard. We’re defending well, and our guys are playing like they don’t want to let each other down.”

The Hornets, who beat Benilde-St. Margaret’s 63-54 in their opener, toppled No. 2 Cretin-Derham Hall 75-61 on Thursday, Dec. 7, and followed with a 71-66 con-quest of No. 1 Apple Valley on Tuesday.

Edina shot a blazing 15-for-28 on three’s against Cretin-Derham Hall, with senior guard Anders Nelson scoring 23 points, junior guard Jack Middleton 16, senior guard Luke Glenna 14 and sophomore center Jacob Hutson 10. Cretin-Derham Hall’s 6-foot-9 Gopher recruit Dan-iel Oturu, who had turned his ankle in a game four days earlier, was limited to 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sy Chatman had 18 points, Ryan Larson 15 and Charlie Dennis 10.

“The Cretin game was a complete team win. Oturu did play and had 10 points. We just tried to limit his easy catches, and our sophomore Jacob Hutson did a great

Shades of 60’s: Edina rises to No. 1job on him. Our plan was to be pa-tient offensively because of how great Cretin can be when they get the ball in Lar-son’s hands and can run. We ex-ecuted well that game, and took great shots.”

Against Apple Valley, they gave up 40 points to the incomparable point guard Tre Jones, who also

snagged 11 rebounds but made just two assists — a key stat for Edina, Burger said.

“Our plan vs. Apple Valley was to not allow Tre Jones to get everyone involved. He’s simply too good to shut down, but it’s when he’s getting 10-plus assists that Apple Valley is unbeatable.”

Edina is usually good for about 70 points, he said, so “we figured we’d let Tre get his and shut everyone else around him down — hoping Tre himself wouldn’t come close to outscoring our entire team. Almost hap-pened anyway.”

Next-high for Apple Valley was Josh Arnold with eight points. Meanwhile, Nelson had 20 points, senior guard Charlie Fischer 14, Middleton 14, and Hutson 13 for the Hornets.

Nelson, a fourth-year varsity player, is “getting every-one involved and is scoring at a very efficient rate,” Burger said. Glenna is their best defender and an excel-lent leader. Middleton is a deadly outside shot. Hutson grew during the off-season, was thrust into major min-utes at the five spot “and has blown away any expecta-tions we had for him.”

Also zooming up the list this week was Eden Prairie from No. 10 to No. 2 after accomplishing what three other top-ten ranked 4A teams could not do — beat Minneahaha Academy (see separate story). The Eagles and Hornets play in the same section, by the way.

Anders Nelson, fourth-year veteran, leads Edina scoring.

Haiby hits 46 of team’s 54 in win By Bruce Strand

Normally we don’t feature the same person two straight weeks in the MBBN, but Moor-head guard Sam Haiby followed up her 2,000-point milestone with an even more remarkable feat. The 5-foot-6 senior poured in 46 of her team’s 54 points in a 54-49 win over No. 10 White Bear Lake at the Breakdown in Minnetonka.

“I really think she is mak-ing a case for Miss Basket-ball with three 40-point games already this year,” coach Jed Carlson said. Haiby had 45 in a 76-66 win over Brainerd and 41 in a 75-73 win over Fargo Davies for the Spuds (5-1).

The Nebraska recruit raised her school record by one

against White Bear Lake, shooting 18-for-34 from the field (2-for-7 on three’s) and 16-for-27 at the line.

Carlson said White Bear Lake is “a tremendous de-fensive team, physical, tough, and gritty” and Haiby did everything “within the flow of the game,” show-ing good shot selection and not forcing things. He was shocked to see, after the game, her point total. “Is there such a thing as a quiet 46?” he mused.

White Bear Lake coach Jeremy Post, who has taken six teams to state with stout defense and balanced scor-ing, was amazed: “She basically did everything pos-sible — transition, steals, three’s, mostly attacking the basket. We did a good job with her until the last five minutes (when) she hurt us bad … We should have double-teamed her in the back court to get the ball out of her hands and make it tough for her to get it back”

For the record, Moorhead’s other points came from Ayana Blythe (five) and Jalen Ennen (three). White Bear Lake (3-2) was led by Tessah Anderson with 19 and Courtney Crouch with 14.

Sam Haiby has three games over 40 for Moorhead

The two new head coaches at Rochester John Marshall and Rochester Mayo got acquainted Friday evening as the ancient rivals had their first meeting of 2017-18 with 1,850 fans packed in the RJM gym, the Rochester Post-Bulletin reported.

RJM drubbed the Spartans 84-54 with 6-foot-9 blue-chipper Mat-thew Hurt dominating both ends, amassing 38 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks.

Jim Daly is the new RJM coach after 14 seasons with Rochester Lourdes. Luke Madsen took over at Mayo after coaching in his na-tive Wisconsin for 18 years.

"This is what you do the summer for, and the practices,” Daly told the Post-Bulletin, re-ferring to the exciting atmosphere. “And we've gone early in the morning. This atmosphere is great for the

kids. I'm really happy for them; they deserve a crowd like this."

Madsen paid tribute to Hurt: "Obviously Matthew Hurt is special. He's just a unique high school talent. Not very many teams have NBA players on the floor, and he certainly has that kind of talent."

Montrea Hyatt added 13 points, Eric Stai 12 and Tyler Ebert 10 for the Rockets. Gabe Madsen had 18, Stephen Douglas 13 and Mason Madsen 10 for the Spartans.

The Rockets were back in action the next afternoon with Hurt scoring 46 points in a 76-75 win over Lakev-ille South in the Breakdown Tip-Off at Hopkins.

The RJM record is 47 points, shared by Hurt (against Rochester Century last season) and Dave Daugherty in 1965. Hurt’s brother Michael, now a sophmore with the Gophers, had a 43-point game against Osseo in 2014. (This information was provided by Daly who looked it up upon our request.)

New role for Lyle-Pacelli: No. 1By Bruce Strand

The Lyle-Pacelli girls, top-ranked in Class 1A for the first time, held off No. 11 Cromwell-Wright 64-53 in a south vs. north duel at the Breakdown Tip-Off at Min-netonka on Saturday.

The Athletics’ 6-foot-5 center Kristi Fett delivered a career-high 30 points along with 14 rebounds and five blocks. Sixth-year starter Brooke Walter, the point guard, added 15 points, eight assists and seven steals.

Cromwell-Wright trailed 36-16 at halftime but got within 58-51 after drilling five consecutive three-point shots. Fett, who’s set for Minnesota State-Mankato, scored twice to beat back the rally.

Teana Hakamaki scored 24 points, Taya Hakamaki 15 and Shaily Hakamaki 10 for Cromwell-Wright, which placed third in the state tournament last season.

Lyle-Pacelli has been stopped by the state champions the last three years — Ada-Borup in the 2015 state semifinals and Goodhue in the sections the last two years — after leading at halftime in each.

Obviously the Athletics are hoping for another shot.

“We’re crazy motivated,” Fett told the Minnesota Bas-ketball Hub. “It’d be a dream come true to go out with a state championship.

“Being rated No. 1, we know we have a target on our backs. We know that means we have to work that much harder.”

* * *Mary Burke, senior center and returning starter from Mountain Iron-Buhl’s state runner-up team, scored 23 points to lead the No. 3 ranked Rangers past No. 7 Lac qui Parle Valley 67-57 at the Breakdown Tip-Off on Saturday in Minnetonka. Junior guard Macy Savela contributed 16 points. LQPV got 19 points from 5-foot-3 guard Kelsea Lund, who was 5-for-5 on three-pointers.

Kristi Fett, Athletics center, posted up on the way to 30 points against Cromwell-Wright.

The Springfield Tigers, one of the top contenders for the Class 1A crown with two-time defending champion Minneapolis North moving up to 2A, made a strong impression in their Breakdown Tip-Off appearance Saturday, beating Spring Grove 86-63.

Mitchell Buerkle had 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while Isaac Fink had 17 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. Tanner Vogel added 17 points, Decker Scheffler 14 and Jordan Kieper 10.

The MBBN has Springfield ranked second and North Woods first, largely due to their state finishes last year, Springfield fourth and North Woods second, each re-turning most of their lineup.

Springfield coach Lance Larson told the MBBN: “We will let you guys take care of those (rankings). We need to just worry about getting out of our loaded section and back to the state tourney and then we will see what happens.”

Owen King, fresh from quarterbacking Caledo-nia to a state football title for the third straight year, poured in 38 points as No. 3 ranked War-riors outgunned No. 5 St. Cloud Cathedral 94-80 at a Breakdown duel of Class 2A state contenders. Noah King added 17 points and Marten Morem 6. Cathedral was missing one of its stars, Mitchell Plombom, with illness. The Crusaders sank 15 three-point shots and led by as much as 10 points. Jacob Stoltzen-burg, a sophomore, led with 26 points. Michael Schaefer provided 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Jackson Baustain-Jangula hit 20.

* * *Kerwin Walton, sophomore who transferred to Hop-kins this year after an impressive freshman season at Maranatha Christian, sparked the Royals past DeLaS-alle 84-79 at the Breakdown. Walton drilled a trio of three-point shots as Hopkins erased a nine-point deficit in the second half, and provided the go-ahead basket as well. Walton and Blaise Beauchamp tallied 19 points each. Zeka Nnaji provided 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jamison Battle led DeLaSalle with 24 points (six treys). Tyrell Terry scored 20 points and Gabe Kalscheur 17.

* * *The No 2 ranked teams in Class 4A and 3A had a spirited duel at the Breakdown with Cretin-Derham Hall edging Orono 77-75, led by Daniel Oturu with 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots. When Orono’s Max Bjorklund struck for a four-point play to pull the Spar-tans within a basket, Oturu foiled their next two posses-sions with a block and a steal. Orono got a three-pointer at the buzzer to trim the final margin to one. Sy Chat-man added 17 points and Ryan Larson 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Raiders (3-1). Bjorklund sank 24 for Orono (3-1). Jarvis Omersa, Oturu’s future Gopher teammate, had 17 points and 14 rebounds with some crowd-pleasing dunks. Colton Codite also hit 17 points.

* * *Frederico Pulgarin, an exchange student from Colum-bia on the Lyle-Pacelli basketball team, had 22 points, 10 steals and eight rebonds, of the bench, in a 90-52 win over Christian Life Academy. “The coaches here are really good and they’re trying to teach me the dif-ferences in basketball [in America],” Pulagarin told the Austin Herald. “I think I’m good to go, and I’m adapt-ing to the style.” Coach Scott Koenigs said Pulagrin’s athleticism stood out right away and he’s learning the finer points.

* * *Delano has not been able to reach the state tournament in recent seasons, playing in a particularly strong section headed by perennial state champion DeLaSalle, but the Tigers trounced a Fergus Falls team that’s gone to the last two state tournaments Saturday at the Breakdown. Calvin Wishart notched 32 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the 86-68 win. Keegan O’Neil added 23 points. Harrison Christensen scored 17, Nate Rund 14 and Matthew Johnson 13 for the Otters.

* * *Zach Kjeseth notched his 1,000th point earlier in the game and sank the game-winning three-pointer with three seconds left as Wabasha-Kellogg nipped Dover-Eyota 50-47 on Dec. 5. Kjeseth, a four-year starter, is No. 5 on the Falcons career list, headed by Ryan Wolfe, 2017 graduate with 1,363 points. (Winona Daily News)

* * *Section 3A has been a huge presence at state boys tournaments in the past two decades, noted Josh Van Klombenburg of the Marshall Independent. A native of the area, he pointed out to the MBBN that this south-western section has produced nine state champions since 1999 — Southwest Christian five times and Rus-sell-Tyler-Ruthtown and Ellsworth twice each — along with four state runners-up and four third-place teams. Ellsworth has finished second three times and SWC once. Central Minnesota Christian has placed third twice and fourth once.

The Pacesetter Minnesota Invitational Tournament has been one of the premier summer tournaments in the Midwest since 1991. NBA players Joel Przybilla, Mike Miller, Kris Humphries, and Nate Wohlers are a few of the many top male and female players who have played in the MIT.

The top teams from the 5-state area of Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are invited annually. Each year 40-70 teams participate.

All teams play 5-6 games in two days. Teams play in “regional” brackets on Saturday (3-4 games) and advance to Final Four brackets based on Saturday results for Sunday (2 games).

Teams that win the prestigious MIT championships will receive individual plaques. Teams with high finishes receive medals with neck ribbons.

One of the top facilities in the area will host this event: Clemens Fieldhouse and Claire Lynch gym at The College of St. Benedict (St. Joseph).

Interested teams are encouraged to register soon to hold a spot.
