This report provides an analysis of traffic accidents that occurred as at March 10, 2016. The traffic accident data quoted met fundamental guidelines for reporting and classifying traffic accidents as defined by the Road Safety Unit. The main criteria are; the crash has been reported to the police, the crash occurred on a road open to and used by the public, whether the road is public or private and the crash involved a vehicle, which, at the time of the accident was in motion. _________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

Seventy-seven persons have been killed in sixty-five fatal crashes since the start of the year.

Fatal crashes remains the same while fatalities increased by eight per cent (8%) when compared with similar period in 2015.

Fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by nineteen per cent (19%) when compared with 2015.

Child fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by seventeen per cent (17%) when compared with 2015.

Elderly fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by two per cent (2%) when compared with 2015.

Pedestrian fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by four per cent (4%) when compared with 2015.

Private motor vehicle passenger fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by seventeen per cent (17%) when compared with 2015.

Private motor vehicle driver fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by twenty-one per cent (21%) when compared with 2015.

Motorcyclist fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by thirty-five per cent (35%) when compared with 2015.

Pedal cyclist fatalities for 2016 are projected to decrease by twenty-one per cent (21%) when compared with 2015.

Pedestrians accounts for sixteen per cent (16%) of the road users killed since the beginning of the year.

PMC Passengers and PMC Drivers accounted for twenty-seven per cent (27%) of the road users killed.

Motorcyclists accounted for forty-two per cent (42%) of the road user killed.

Pedestrian, PMC Passengers, Motorcyclist and PMC Driver fatalities account eighty-three per cent (83%) road users killed to date.

Passengers accounted for twenty-one per cent (21%) of the road user killed.

Passenger fatalities decreased by sixteen per cent (16%) when compared to similar period in 2015.

Males and females accounted for ninety-two per cent (92%) and eight per cent (8%) respectively of the persons killed in traffic crashes.

Ten per cent (10%) of the persons killed belonged to the 60 and over age group.

Twenty-two per cent (22%) of the overall fatalities occurred in Westmoreland.

Westmoreland, St. Ann and St. Andrew accounted for forty-five per cent (45%) of the overall fatalities.

Four children died from traffic crashes since the start of this year.

Child fatalities have increased by thirty-three per cent (33%) when compared to similar period in 2015.

Eight elderly persons lost their lives in fatal crashes since the start of this year.

Elderly fatalities have decreased by twenty per cent (20%) when compared with similar period in 2015.

Twelve pedestrians died as a result of eleven fatal pedestrian crashes.

Pedestrian fatalities decreased by thirty-seven per cent (37%) when compared with similar period in 2015.

Males accounted for all of the pedestrian fatalities since the start of the year.

Eleven private motor vehicle passengers have been killed in nine fatal collisions since the start of this year.

Private motor vehicle passenger fatalities decreased by twenty-seven per cent (27%) when compared with similar period in 2015.

Ten private motor vehicle drivers have been killed since the start of this year.

Private motor vehicle driver fatalities remains the same when compared with similar period in 2015.

Forty per cent (40%) of private motor vehicle driver fatalities occurred in the parish of St. James.

Thirty-one motorcyclists have been killed since the start of this year.

Motorcyclist fatalities increased by eighty-two per cent (82%) when compared to similar period in 2015.

Males accounted for all of the motorcyclist fatalities since the start of the year.

Forty-two per cent (42%) of motorcycle fatalities occurred in the parish of Westmoreland.

Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth accounted for fifty-eight per cent (58%) of motorcyclists killed.

Two multiple fatal collisions have occurred since the start of the year resulting in six fatalities.
