Status and actions under the Suriname - FAO Cooperation
1. Farm Registration and Animal Identification and Traceability System German firm hired. IT system preparations in process. Recruitment expertise in process.
2. Sustainable management of by-catch in Latin America and Caribbean trawl fisheries II Letter of Agreement 1: ends April 2017. Planned activities almost completed. Preparations ongoing for 2nd Letter of Agreement and new work plan.
3. Capture Fisheries legislation 1st raw draft legislation in Dutch. Proposed mission FAO in May 2017 to finalize drafting.
4. Food Security Impact, Resilience and Sustainability Programme FIRST policy officer recruited for 11 months (May 2017—March 2018) to be based in Suriname and work along side staff and partners to implement NFNSP.
5. Cassava industry – Production and Processing Technology Validation and Dissemination 1st mission October 2016. Work Plan Suriname submitted to CDB. In alignment with CLAYUCA cassava project.
6. Agriculture Disaster Risk Management Plans 1st mission October 2016. Proposed launch in Suriname, April 2017
7. Obsolete pesticides Shipment of approx. 100 tons of obsolete pesticides. Continued activities as per regional work plan: regional platform, dialogue, knowledge exchange, financial mechanism, alternative methods and techniques etc.

1. Livestock legislation Animal welfare Act amended and approved by parliament. Others (production, feed, slaughterhouses, and veterinary profession) to be put on the agenda of the parliament. 2. Aquaculture disease monitoring system + health act Monitoring system need to be established and operational. Lack of local funds to finalize. 3. Agriculture statistics system Suriname statistics are now frequently uploaded on the FAO website and need to be continued. Stakeholder awareness needs to be conducted with the aim of specific agriculture data availability within the ministry as well as on the FAO web. 4. Food and Nutrition Security Policy and Action Plan Some actions will be implemented under the FIRST project under supervision of the policy officer to be recruited for 11 months and to be based in Suriname. 5. Whitepaper action plans These action plans were never made available during the course of the project. Review of the agriculture policy whitepapers and the need for writing the action plans for the 2015-2020 period. 6. Strengthen the Small Ruminant Sector Results of the 50 sperm samples utilized, will determine further efficient use of the remaining inputs.
