Pastor Peterson’s Pericopes

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

The church is dying! The church is dying!

Bethlehem recently hosted the Bluegrass and BBQ fundraising event for Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp. I was pleased with how well it went for our first time hosting the event. The Ropte Pavilion and the surrounding grounds provided a perfect location. The BBQ from Dickey’s was finger lickin’ good. Bethlehem and First Lutheran members provided plenty of coleslaw and cookies. Bless Dave Hooley for all the cotton candy he cranked out! The Bethlehem Bluegrass Band and Jerusalem Road contributed great music. Best of all, we raised over $5,000 for the camp.

The camp staff from Sky Ranch came down en masse to help run the evening. As a part of the evening activities, the camp staff introduced themselves and sang some camp songs. Many Bethlehem members commented to me about how impressed they were by the camp staff. For one, they came from all over the country, but it was their passion, enthusiasm, and work ethic that really touched people. It was inspiring.

And then multiply that by all our church camps across the country. That’s a lot of young adults filled with passion for serving the Lord. In turn, they will pass that passion on to the campers they will work with this summer. We saw that happen at our Day Camp this week. The five Sky Ranch counselors that led our Day Camp were outstanding.

In our latest Living Lutheran, there is a picture of 85 young adults who will serve in Global Missions. They have committed to a year of service. Recently, Pastor Zach Parris, campus ministry leader at CU, took a group of students on a Spring Break trip to the Holy Land and Palestine. It was much more than a vacation for these students. Once again, multiply that by all the campus ministries across our church. The church may be changing, but it is certainly not dying. Not as long as we have these young adults who are committed, passionate, and willing to serve. May they be an inspiration for us all.

Blessings,

Pastor Peterson

New Musical Opportunity for BLC Children with Brenda Harris

Greetings!

I just had a delightful week at BLC Day Camp, working with preschool through 5th grade students— playing tambourines, hitting lummi sticks and boomwhackers, ringing tone chimes, and, of course, singing. Counselors from Sky Ranch and our own BLC youth provided wonderful assistance and joy!

At our program, the preschool sang a very nice version of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”, complete with a tambourine interlude and choreography involving a globe. The older students and I had lots of fun learning and practicing with the other instruments, and ultimately, were able to do a nice mashup of “Jesus Loves Me”— complete with singing and sign language.

Learning to play each instrument had its own challenges—When playing the tambourine, do you shake it or tap it? Lummi sticks are sometimes tossed and ideally, caught. Boomwhackers and tone chimes each have separate pitches to play in rhythm to create a recognizable melody. Different skills are required to play all the different instruments. I am reminded of the fact that we, of differing abilities, work in God’s diverse kingdom, serving as God’s own active body while living crazy, sometimes chaotic, fulfilling, meaningful, and joyous lives. We are to be a living praise!

My favorite anecdote from camp: Upon announcing to a class that I would be absent one day, but back the next, one little boy wailed, “But, what’ll we do without music?” Nicely put, young man. The vital importance of music, especially music as a method of praise, is a universal necessity.

I am interested in providing a similar musical experience for our BLC children in the Fall, if there is sufficient interest in a program of this kind. Please let me know if your children or grandchildren might like to participate.

Praise God with the boomwhacker!

Brenda Harris

Worship

We never “take the summer off” when it comes to our worship. We always want it to be inspired and well done.

In July, we will be switching to setting #3 in the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW). On the first Sunday of each month through September, we will worship outside under the Ropte Pavilion at 10:15 a.m.

Members have said that they miss hearing the organ in worship, so we hope to have an organ-led worship on the first Sunday of the month at 8:00 a.m. In addition, Paul Thompson, our former worship coordinator, will be coming back on July 9 to provide the special music for the services that Sunday. We appreciate the flexibility of the bluegrass group to adjust their Sunday. Usually, they lead worship on that second Sunday of the month,

but the bluegrass liturgy will be on July 16 instead.

Atwood Shelter—Let’s keep helping!

The Atwood Shelter continues to need our help now more than ever! If each month, every BLC family contributed the two items requested. Bethlehem would be able to support the two Atwood Apartments without needing to subsidize. Your contributions really matter! For July and August, please add these items to your shopping list: toilet paper, bleach, dishwasher–dish soap, sponges, and dish scrubbers.

No worries about brand—anything and everything is appreciated! If you have questions, please contact Bev Coody ([email protected] or 720-530-4864).

The shelter can always use these items: diapers, baby wipes, shampoo and conditioner, trash bags, comet, bleach, Pine Sol, toilet paper, deodorant, razors, twin and queen sheets and blankets, and silverware.

Appalachian Mission Trip 2017, September 24–October 1

Want to join the team going to the St. Vincent Mission in David, Kentucky this Fall? We still have some open slots on our 20-person team, and our fundraising takes care of the majority of costs involved. For traveling in the church coach, we especially need volunteers who are comfortable driving the van for a two-hour shift. You can also opt to fly, however, tickets (and the potential for a group rate) need to be worked out soon. You will have comfortable lodging at the new, six-bedroom volunteer house, which can accommodate couples as well as male or female rooms.

Please contact Bob Cotton ([email protected] or 303-651-6563) for more details and costs.

Lutheran Family Services Backpack Drive

The annual Backpack Drive to benefit refugee children and children in foster care is happening again this summer! Informational Session on Foster Care in Colorado

Every day in Colorado there are children in need of a safe environment, and there is currently a great demand for more people to commit to these children. Please come to an informational meeting to learn more about foster care in the Denver Metro area. Meetings will be held on July 12 from 12:30–1:30 p.m. and from 5:30–6:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Family Services office (363 S. Harlan Street, Suite 105, Denver, 80226). For more information, please contact Anne Hamilton ([email protected] or 303-217-5869).

Older Adult and Caregiver Services

Older Adult & Caregiver Services offers free monthly telephone conferences to answer your questions about aging. Join us on July 12 from 12:00–1:00 p.m. for the session titled Aging in Place: What am I forgetting? Many older people prefer to remain in their home for as long as possible, as opposed to relocating to an assisted living or other medical facility. We will consider Aging-in-Place issues including community and social interaction, access to education and entertainment, the financial implications of Aging in Place, and will discuss how to prioritize the needs list you identify. Registration is required. Sign up at https://lfsrm.org/programs-and-services/oacs/ask-care-manager/ or contact our OACS staff at 303-217-5864 or 970-232-1180.

ELCA Youth Gathering Informational Meeting

Sunday, August 20 at 11:30 a.m. Calling all parents of students who are entering grades 8–12 this Fall! YOU are the eligible students for the ELCA Youth Gathering 2018 in Houston, Texas! The dates of the event are June 27–July 1, 2018, plus travel days on either end. We will be registering on September 15. This means we need to get you some information! Please plan on attending our no-commitment, informational meeting on August 20 to have all of your questions answered. This event has been a rich tradition of BLC's youth ministry, not to mention transformational in the lives of many of our youth who are now young adults. At this meeting, we will cover registration, adult leadership, event content, transportation, and dates for fundraising, etc. Our registration/paperwork meeting will be September 10 at 11:30 a.m.

BLC Community Garden

We would like to invite everyone to stop by the garden at least once this summer. We’re doing things a little bit different this year—it’s less muddy; the plant selection is unique; and we’re hoping to get LOTS of hands doing very little work. While you’re there, feel free to pull a few weeds and sample what’s growing. Be sure to check out the hearty cabbage patch. Apparently, our PreK–5th graders are big fans of cabbage. We asked the children to bring a plant of their choice this year, and the popular winner was, by far, cabbage. Check it out!

Collision to Remission Racing: Some Race for Fun—Some Race for Their Lives

BLC has two FUN opportunities to watch some awesome drag-racing this summer while helping support a life-saving cause. Collison to Remission Racing (http://c2rracing.com/) was formed on the idea of having kids and families in the Junior Drag Racing arena team up with kids and families who are fighting cancer. Having a kid race a dragster in the honor of a kid fighting cancer forms a special bond—a bond that can help both succeed.

To bring this vision to light, Collision to Remission Racing has partnered with One Cure (http://www.csuanimalcancercenter.org/one-cure) based at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and Bandimere Speedway in Morrison. One Cure is a program founded on the principle that cancer affects all creatures and that treatment breakthroughs come through collaboration between scientists and doctors who are working with both people and animals. This approach is known as comparative or translational oncology. This is the core of One Cure and the guiding concept at the Flint Animal Cancer Center at the Colorado State University. Through research, comparative oncology, and sheer determination, One Cure is making a difference to both humans and animals in the fight against cancer.

To help in this cause, Bandimere Speedway has enabled us to work with the Junior Drag Racing kids, set up a HUGE vendor display, as well as host a very special race—One Cure Mayhem on the Mountain. This race has never been done before and brings the top Pro-Mod cars from across the world to Bandimere Speedway on August 4–5, 2017.

There are two ways to get involved in this fun experience. Kent Blythe and Greg Schumann, the founders of Collision to Remission Racing, are hosting an event at Bandimere Speedway on July 21, where you will be able to enjoy watching the races from the comfort of an air-conditioned suite. There are twenty-four seats available for this event, and we will be catering in food and beverages. There are also food vendors throughout the facility. All we ask in exchange is that folks visit the One Cure website (http://www.csuanimalcancercenter.org/one-cure ) and consider donating. If you choose to donate, please type DRAGSTER in the comment section so we can track our success.

We also will have many tickets available for the first-ever One Cure Mayhem on the Mountain race on August 4–5. These seats will be outside in the VIP section. Please contact Greg Schumann ([email protected]) if you wish to attend either event. Those attending will be notified no later than July 10 for the July 21 race. We do ask that you consider how many spaces you request due to the limited availability of that event. For the August 4–5 event, we have the potential for fifty tickets or more.

Relay for Life

August 12, Saturday, 4:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m. Once again, BLC will have a Relay for Life team. This year's event will be the East Boulder County/Waneka Lake event in Lafayette, CO. This is an easy late night, instead of an overnight event like last year, so we hope more folks can join us for the entire event!

To join our BLC team, click here (http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?team_id=2218743&pg=team&fr_id=80364&s_locale=en_US&et=lalmx1lwr4xAD4xF1_ecIg&s_tafId=1922455) or talk to Matt Helman ([email protected]) or Deaconess Kristen ([email protected]). We will have our one-and-only team meeting on July 16, 11:30 a.m. We'd love to have you join us!

Property

It's been a long time coming, but the landscaping project is finally complete! The project began last fall with the removal of about a dozen highly overgrown Juniper bushes on both the north and south sides of the church. Helping Hands Tree Service used their large truck with a grappling hook to pull the roots straight out of the ground. They later came back and used a stump grinder to remove any roots that were left over.

Next, a landscape designer was hired to draft up a plan for these now vacant areas with the goal of using low-maintenance and water-friendly plants. Luckily for us, we had a group of about a dozen college students from Wartburg College in Iowa staying in the mission house in April. In exchange for staying in the house, they asked to do a project as a form of payment. They may have had the short end of the stick because they helped remove several tons of old mulch, bark, plants, rock, etc. from both areas in preparation for the new plants. However, they weren't alone, we had several volunteers from both BLC and Light of Christ involved in the multi-day prep.

At the church work day, many volunteers (again from BLC and LOC) helped finish up the planting and irrigation system renovations. The final push came just before the Bluegrass and BBQ event held on June 3. This time, another group of volunteers with the aid of a Toro "Dingo" (walk-behind, skid-steer) moved, raked, kicked, and prodded 30 tons of new landscape rock into place. We hope you will agree that this has been a major improvement to the church and will serve us well for many years to come.

Thank you:

The Nicaragua Project team thanks Jan Geiser for her years of effort as our bookkeeper. She has contributed more hours than anyone can count. We will miss working with her but are glad that she is getting some rest from all the work we have asked her to do. Thank you, Jan, from the bottom of our hearts. Mary Gustafson has agreed to step into the role of bookkeeper. Welcome Mary.

Bethlehem was here for Verne during his illness. Many gave freely of their time, and many let us know their thoughts and prayers were with us. Everyone helped. Now, though, saying goodbye is difficult. We have so much love and support. Thank you very much. ~ Bev Berry
