F irst Reading: Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13

All of today’s readings, in various ways, make the point that the God of Israel is on the side of the weak and humble. In the Hebrew Bible reading, the prophet Zephaniah speaks to those soon to be conquered by the Babylonians. He stresses that if they humbly pursue justice, God will not abandon them.

S econd Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

In this segment of his letter to Corinth, the Apostle Paul reminds his readers, and us, that believers have done nothing to merit God’s grace. We must humbly remember that we have no reason to boast.

G ospel: Matthew 5:1-12

Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel presents an excerpt of the Sermon on the Mount. Like Moses on Mount Sinai, Jesus instructs how the people of God should behave. Those who humbly pursue justice will be vindicated by God.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect

on the Readings for the week of January 29

Monday Heb 11:32-40; Ps 31:20, 21, 23, 24; Mk 5:1-20

POPE FRANCIS AND DEFENSE OF THE UNBORN

During this past week countless numbers of women, men and children marched for the

Respect for Life in Washington, DC and state capitals. We must stand up against abortion on demand and stand for the culture of life. I want to share with you two paragraphs from Pope Francis’ Evangellii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel.)

Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and

concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. Frequently, as a way of ridiculing the Church’s effort to defend their lives, attempts are made to present her position as ideological, obscurantist and conservative. Yet this defense of unborn life is closely linked to the defense of each and every other human right. It involves the conviction that a human being is always sacred and inviolable, in any situation and at every stage of development. Human beings are ends in themselves and never a means of resolving other problems. Once this conviction disappears, so do solid and lasting foundations for the defense of human rights, which would always be subject to the passing whims of the powers that be. Reason alone is sufficient to recognize the inviolable value of each single human life, but if we also look at the issue from the standpoint of faith, “every violation of the personal dignity of the human being cries out in vengeance to God and is an offence against the creator of the individual”. (Christifideles Laici 37)

Precisely because this involves the internal consistency of our message about the value

of the human person, the Church cannot be expected to change her position on this question. I want to be completely honest in this regard. This is not something subject to alleged reforms or “modernizations”. It is not “progressive” to try to resolve problems by eliminating a human life. On the other hand, it is also true that we have done little to

adequately accompany women in very difficult situations, where abortion appears as a quick solution to their profound anguish, especially when the life developing within them is the result of rape or a situation of extreme poverty. Who can remain unmoved before such painful situations? Evangelii Gaudium nos. 213-

214

We ask the Lord to help us stand up for the sanctity of all human life, from conception to natural death. In Christ’s Peace, Father John

BLESSED ARE YOU The Beatitudes are a radical invitation to all

Christians to revisit our priorities. Jesus is asking us to value everything that society rejects: poverty, suffering, hunger, etc. and blesses us if we are poor in spirit or persecuted for his sake.

Adults: Which Beatitude do I identify with in my own life? How or why?

Children: Am I a peacemaker as Jesus asks me to be or do I ever bully others?

Today's Gospel offers a contrast to many of the messages we hear in our society today. If we were to accept uncritically the “get ahead” messages of our culture, we would think that happiness means having money, being successful, having many possessions, and so on. When we think this way, we are not unlike the people who heard Jesus teach on the day that he taught the Beatitudes. The crowd that day also associated happiness with material possessions and status.

Talk as a family about what it means to be happy or to be blessed. Make a list of traits that you would associate with a happy person. Then read together today's Gospel, Matthew 5:1-12a. Reflect on Jesus' description of happiness. Think about what each of the Beatitudes might have in common and write a family summary of the Beatitudes. Post the summary in a special place as a reminder of what your family will consider “true happiness.”

FATHER PRZEMEK SAYS “DZIEKUJE WAM”

I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped to make my 30th birthday so special. From the Clergy and staff at Assumption, to all the people at Mass, at the school, and in the town, I cannot express how full my heart is from your prayers, your good wishes and your love. God has blessed me with my assignment at Assumption, and I will continue to pray that He blesses each of you and our world with His peace and His grace.

RESIDENTS OF STRAIGHT AND NARROW

WILL SPEAK TO OUR YOUTH

On Sunday, February 12th, residents of Straight and Narrow, a Catholic Charities agency that develops and delivers education and treatment services to clients with addictive disorders, will join us for 5:30 p.m. Mass. The S & N Gospel band and choir will be providing the music.

Following Mass, these residents, along with representatives from Drug Free NJ, Daytop in Mendham, and others, will speak to all 6th-10th graders in our parish and their parents about this epidemic.

Thinking it can’t happen to you? Truth is, we are all affected by the disease of addiction, in one way or another. Our families, our schools, our churches, our health care system, our emergency management system are all affected.

This presentation is open and appropriate to all in our community ages 12 and up.

SUPER BAKE SALE FOR A SUPER CAUSE

Our 8th grade religious education youth have taken on a very special service project this year. The group has committed to sponsoring two children, Alio Sillah (Male, 15 years old) and Ramatu Mansarray (Female, 13 years old), from Sierra Leone through Africa Surgeries, Inc. The funds raised will help provide education and necessary living expenses to help these children survive. Please support our only fundraiser for this sponsorship - a bake sale after all of the masses on Super Bowl weekend - February 4th & 5th. Stop by Rauscher Hall after one of the Masses to purchase some baked goods from one of our 8th graders. We will be selling cookies, cupcakes, cakes, pies, breads, etc. for you to purchase to take with you to your Super Bowl party!!

DAY OF PRAYER AT THE

JESUIT RETREAT CENTER IN MORRISTOWN

On Saturday February 4 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., presenter Anna Graziano will conduct a day of prayer at the Jesuit Retreat Center 161 James St., Morristown.

The path to forgiveness may seem impossible to follow. However, forgiveness does not deny the anger and pain one feels but rather channels these natural emotional reactions away from destructive tendencies that block the voice of Jesus in your life. The surprise comes in opening your heart and saying "yes" to take that path and experience the peace, love, healing, joy and direction of Jesus promises. Call (973) 539-0740 to register.
