irst Reading: Acts 6;1-7

Our first reading describes a growing church. As the numbers of believers increase, it becomes

necessary to organize various sorts of ministries to meet people’s needs. In this particular instance, seven men with Greek names are chosen to see to the needs of Greek speaking church members.

econd Reading: 1 Peter 2:4-9

In this excerpt from the First Letter of Peter, the Church is described as a holy building built out of

the lives of each of its members. With Christ as the keystone, all believers are to be a consecrated and priestly people.

ospel: John 14:1-12

This Gospel passage, and those for the next several weeks, are taken from the Gospel of

John’s lengthy “Last Supper” discourse. In this excerpt, we learn that since Jesus does the work of the Father, Jesus’ friends must be doing the Father’s work also.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of May 14

GOOD SAMARITANS OFFER

NEW TELEPHONE VISITATION MINISTRY

Do you know someone who is disabled or a shut-in? Our Good Samaritan Ministry is adding an additional service to our menu: telephone visitation for anyone who is a shut-in or who just needs a friendly “Hello” on a regular basis. We all need to know someone cares about us, and a silent phone can be almost deafening when you are lonely. If you or someone you know would like a call from Terri, our volunteer Telephone Visitor, please call the Good Samaritan Coordinator of the month (in May it is Jeanette Fredericks, 973-216-2231, with the name and telephone number of the Assumption parishioner to be called. The Coordinator will pass the information to Terri, and conversation between the two will begin on a regular basis for as long as the individual finds it beneficial. As always with the Good Samaritans Ministry, all information is confidential.

And of course our usual ministry is still operating for those who need help. This ministry can assist parishioners with shopping, banking, doctor and dentist appointments, and other errands. Our coordinator for May is Jeanette Fredericks at (973) 216-2231.

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

" In my Father's house there are many dwelling places . . ."

Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these . . ." (John 14: 1-12)

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

Gus Hardy is a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Just out of college, he works at the Poverello Center, the state's largest homeless shelter in Missoula, Montana. He arrives every morning at 6:30. He spends his day helping the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the addicted, the mentally ill and those just released from prison. It's a job that requires a lot of "people skills" that do not come naturally to Gus. Gus was born with autism.

Gus has written a moving and inspiring essay about his work and life in America Magazine [March 6, 2017].

"In my work I have been called 'cold,' 'impersonal' (and far worse) about as many times as I have been told that I am doing the work of God. No matter what people say, I look each person in the eye and try with everything I can muster to create the empathic connection that seems to come so easily to other people. It is bitter work for me, more than for most of the world, but God has called me to it, so I have got to step up . . .

"By default, I am not a good listener. More often than not, I have found myself on the outside of groups rather than in. After my diagnosis, I began to work on learning simple social customs, like careful listening and making eye contact, and it felt for a long time as though I were trying to atone for the sin of who I was."

But in college Gus discovered a different idea of God in the writings of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Gus realized that his life could be "something more."

"Looking back, I find it remarkable that I believed in God to begin with. Autism is a condition that does not allow for many gray areas in one's world view. People like me see the world through logic more than emotion, and draw more on rationality than anything transcendent.

"I cannot tell you why God created me this way. I cannot say what purpose autism is meant to serve, and I cannot tell you if you are meant to conform to my behavioral standards or I am to yours. All I can say is that God pulled me out of a very dark time and gave me hope and a great gift - a sense of something beyond myself. In doing so, I was shown that the world is full of God's people who also cry out in their own ways, and I am called to serve them.

"Whenever I consider my possible life plans, they are always in the context of serving others. A life of service can be difficult, and having a disorder that biologically wires one to have a hard time being with others does not help. But I am hoping that the fact that I'm out here, pushing myself to both serve and understand others must mean that I care all the more."

Gus Hardy has found purpose in his life in God-centered service - it's a struggle for him, to be sure, but he finds meaning and fulfillment - and joy - in his life "doing the works that I do." May we embrace and be embraced in that same Spirit, enabling us to reflect the love of God in Christ for one another. On the night before he died, Jesus asks his disciples to take up "the work that I do": the work of humble servanthood that places the hurts and pain of others before our own, the work of charity that does not measure the cost, the work of love that transcends limits and conditions. The simplest work of compassion and charity, done in God's spirit of love, is to do the very work of Christ; the most hidden and unseen acts of kindness will be exalted by Christ as great in the kingdom of his Father.

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

LIVING STONES

During the Easter season, the Gospels move from intimate and personal encounters with Jesus to an outward-looking focus. The outward focus of today’s Gospel is the universal challenge that we are to be the way, truth and life for others, following in the footsteps of Jesus.

Adults: In what ways does my personal relationship with Jesus, thrust me into a role of service?

Children: How would I describe Jesus?

A Family’s Perspective: Members of the same family often bear close resemblances to one another. Sometimes physical resemblances are shared within a family, but often the similarities are behavioral characteristics and mannerisms. We hear this observation affirmed through a number of common phrases: “He's a chip off the old block” or “She's her mother's daughter.” Today's Gospel points to a mystery of faith that might be examined in light of these familial relationships. In Jesus we see and know the Father. Likewise, the Father is known through the life and work of the Son, Jesus. Talk together as a family about whether people outside of your family recognize common traits of your family. Are there physical resemblances that people recognize and so know each individual as a member of your family? Are there mannerisms that are shared by members of your family? What are some common interests and work that people might associate with your family?

NATIONAL WOMEN'S HEALTH WEEK

MAY 14-20, 2017

“Blessed are you among women.,

blest in turn all women too. Blessed they with peaceful spirits,

Blessed they with gentle hearts”

Carey Landry

National Women's Health Week begins on Mother's Day, each year. As part of this annual event, women are encouraged to schedule an annual-check up with their physician, or other health care provider. Annual check-ups provide the opportunity to obtain recommended health screenings, discuss your risk factors for preventable diseases, and learn how to improve and maintain your health.

For more information about National Women's Health Week, go to http://womenshealth.gov/nwhw.

We can look to Mary, Mother of the Church, for guidance and strength as we celebrate both Mother's Day and National Women's Health Week.

SPENDING TIME WITH FATHER MARTIN

Social Networking is not just online! We would like to build a person to person social network for Father Martin Rauscher. Father Martin, our beloved Pastor Emeritus, is now residing at Sunrise Assisted Living in Madison, and he loves to have visitors. Most visits are short, 15-20 minutes. Some of the best times to visit with Father are after meals, 9-10:30 a.m., 1:00-2:30 p.m. and 600:-7:30 p.m.

Recently one of our parishioners visited with Fr. Martin. Here is what Laura had to say:

“I had a wonderful visit with Father Martin. His smile is infectious. To reminisce, I brought the 2009 Assumption Yearbook which was dedicated to him. I read him the farewell poem that was written in his honor and he was all smiles! What a blessing to have shared this precious time with our dear Father Martin!”

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

Farewell to Father Przemek Join us on Sunday June 25th Join us at 12:15 Mass (reception

following in the School Gym) to wish Father Przemek a fond

farewell as he answer God’s call to study at Catholic University.

For the last four years Fr. Przemek has been an important part of

our Parish family. He has always been there for us, sharing his

time, his laughter, and his prayers! But most importantly, he has

shared his love of God, of his Son Jesus, of the Holy Spirit, and

the Blessed Mother. He has been an example to us on how to

live a life fully and joyfully in the Catholic faith.

We will miss him, but we know that God has a plan for him.

And watching him accept God’s will helps us to be courageous

about our own future. We thank God for sending Fr. Przemek to

Assumption, and we thank Fr. Przemek for being the amazing

person he is! We ask Fr. Przemek to keep us in his prayers, as

we will keep him in ours.

Please R.S.V.P. if you are planning to attend the reception for

Fr. Przemek at www.assumptionparish.org or call the Parish

Office at 973-539-2141.
