GATHER IN PRAYER

Pray the Rosary weekdays 20 minutes before the 12:05 p.m. Mass.

Pray the Perpetual Novena in honor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal every Monday immediately following the 12:05 p.m. Mass.

Eucharistic Adoration the first Saturday of each month 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. and the first Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m.

Eucharistic Adoration every Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel, Cedar Knolls.

irst Reading: 2 Samuel 5:1-3

Our first reading is a short passage that narrates how David became king over all the tribes of Israel. His kingship, though, must be in accord with God’s will.

econd Reading: Colossians 1:12-20

The Letter to the Colossians was written in Paul’s name by a disciple who had a distinctly mystical approach to the Christian message. Using Jewish imagery about Lady Wisdom, he describes Christ as the one through whom all creation has come into being and been brought together.

ospel: Luke 23:35-43

Mockingly crucified by the romans as “King of the Jews,” the tortured Jesus reveals what true kingship is. He is not a dominating dictator, but one who shares in the pains and mortality of his people.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect

on the Readings for the week of November 20

BISHOPS ANNUAL APPEAL

Be Rich in Good Works This past May, after years of study, ten men were

ordained to the priesthood for our Diocese. As they prepared for their vocation, they were supported by family and friends. When you make a pledge to the Bishop's Annual Appeal, they are also supported by you since Appeal funds are used to help meet the cost of priestly formation and education. Please support our seminarians by making a pledge to the Bishop's Annual Appeal today. For your convenience, you can make an online gift at www.2016appeal.org.

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 22: 35-43)

We celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King and our Jubilee of Mercy draws to a close. Here is a brief reflection I hope you will enjoy.

Six weeks after he had a double lung transplant, she threatened to leave him. He had been sick for some time and the transplant was his only hope. They left their home in New Mexico for

the hospital in Palo Alto, California. She was right there the whole time, supervising his diet, dealing with the mood swings, bucking him up with all seemed lost. She remained the clear-headed one, seeing to his ever increasing needs in the morning and working her day job in the afternoon. Both knew the risks and the hard work that awaited them, but all the brochures and preparation in the world cannot prepare you for how radically life-altering the transplant process is, how fundamentally less than human you become while waiting and wasting away. But she continued to care for him and keep their life together.

Then one day she said, “I don’t think I can do this anymore.” She had already bought a plane ticket home. His mother flew in to relieve her and she left for New Mexico. He spent those next days and weeks incensed.

How could she? He ranted to himself. Who does something like that? They didn’t talk much while she was gone. Then came the epiphany. He writes: “Once I knew she was

coming back, I began deciding what I was going to say to her, how I was going to explain how hurt and upset I was that she would simply abandon me after everything I had gone through.

“And there it was. I hadn’t gone through anything. We had. Together. “Every problem my waning health presented [her] had to be handled twice over, worrying about me and

worrying about her life after me if it all went sideways . . . She had to deal with the information, the issues and repercussions, acting as nursemaid, housekeeper, chauffeur and lawyer for me — the man who was supposed to share her life, not consume it.

“I don’t think I can do this anymore. Her words haunted me for weeks, but I was wrong about them . . . Her

hasty retreat didn’t mean that she was done with me. It means that she was as broken as I was.” [From “Modern Love: When Love isn’t as Simple as Standing by Your Man” by Eirik Gumeny, The New York Times, September 11, 2016.] We often see our own experiences of the cross through the perspective of the first thief: that it’s about saving ourselves, that our survival blinds us to the crosses of others, that we’re victims, that it’s not our fault or responsibility. But the “good” thief in today’s Gospel not only accepts his culpability but, more importantly,

recognizes the injustice of Jesus’ crucifixion. The Kingdom of God begins with the compassion and humility of the good thief; at the heart of the reign of Christ is the realization that God is in our midst in the love and care of family and friends, that we do not suffer alone, that we are all in need of forgiveness and understanding, of mercy and consolation. Christ’s Kingdom that we celebrate on this last Sunday of the liturgical year is founded on the power of such compassion, of such reconciliation, of such healing, of such a vision of humanity as one family under the providence of God, the loving Father of all. WITH JESUS IN PARADISE

Anyone would have difficulty calling a poor criminal hanging on a tree “king.” Yet, that is what we Christians call Jesus, the Word made flesh, who died on a cross: Christ the King!

Adults: What have I learned from the way Christ died?

Children: Do I ask Jesus to “remember me” when I need help?

A Family Perspective: Understanding today's Feast of Christ the King may be particularly challenging. While we may not have a direct experience of kings or royalty, we have some sense of what these mean. We know that royalty have sovereignty over their kingdom. We know that those who are subjects to royalty offer them allegiance and honor. Christ is King in a way that is different from traditional understandings of royalty. Christ's kingship extends to all places, all people, and all times. Christ manifests his kingship through his death on the Cross, in which he offers salvation to all. Recall with your children stories that you may have read about royalty. Talk with your children about what they have learned from these stories about what it means to be a king.

Tell your children that this Sunday is the last Sunday in the Church Year, and on this Sunday, we celebrate a

special feast called the Feast of Christ the King. Reflect together on how the various people in this Gospel respond to Jesus on the Cross. Who in this Gospel recognizes Jesus as King? (the thief) What does Jesus promise the thief as a result? (The thief will be with Jesus in paradise.) Talk about how your family will recognize and honor Christ the King.

SOCK IT TO ME

The winter is upon us and our friends who are homeless or in need would benefit from the warmth of dry socks to keep their feet healthy and protected.

We will collect NEW socks during the month of November. Any size new socks will do. Please drop them in the food baskets in the church and they will be delivered to those in need. Please lend a hand and provide covering for their feet.

ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING Nov. 26/27

Once again we are approaching the wonderful time of Advent - preparation for the solemn celebration of Christ’s birth. Individuals, friends, couples, and families are invited to help us light the candles of our Advent Wreath. A sign-up sheet will be on the table of the rectory side doors for you to choose which Mass you would like to participate in lighting the Advent Wreath. The only requirement is that you arrive ten minutes before the Mass in the Sacristy for instructions. This is a Sacred and wonderful way to deepen your participation in this Holy Season of Advent.

Your sacrificial giving in our weekly offertory and your support at Christmas and Easter enable us to accomplish the Lord’s work here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS

AND MILITARY SERVICES COLLECTION

This weekend there will be a second collection for the Catholic Home Missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal supports dioceses in the United States that lack the resources to provide basic pastoral ministry to their populations. Through annual grants, Catholic Home Missions funds catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, Hispanic ministry, and other pastoral programs in needy dioceses. Catholic Home Missions impacts the lives of nearly 9 million Catholics.

A portion of the funds will also be used to support the Archdiocese for the Military Services. This Archdiocese is so important because it serves the pastoral needs of those in military installations in many countries as well as patients in V.A. Medical Centers. Our priests, religious, and lay ministers in the Archdiocese for the Military Services serve more than 1.8 million men, women, and children. Having a Catholic presence available to those who serve us is a great way to express our thanks for their commitment to our country.

Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you, and God bless you.

TURKEY TROT AND ONE MILE FUN RUN

Did you know that one in six people will face hunger at some point in their lives? You can help us feed and educate more people by supporting the Interfaith Food Pantry and Literacy Volunteers of Morris County’s (LVMC) ninth annual “Turkey Trot” 5K race and one-mile fun run/walk, taking place at 8:30 a.m., Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 24 at the Ginty Field Complex. NEWS FROM SEMINARIAN CHRIS HAN

Seminarian Chris Han, who has been spending summers and breaks from the seminary at Assumption, is now studying at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. In a recent email to Father John, he says that although there are many challenges

being far from home and learning a new language, he is very happy, and always growing closer to God. He also loves and misses the people of Assumption Parish. If you would like to send Chris a note of encouragement, a Christmas card, or just a quick email, you can do so by postal mail at Chris Han, Pontifical North American College, Via del Gianicolo 14, 00165 Rome, RM, Italy, or by emailing [email protected]. Let’s send Chris some love from Assumption.

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

DOCTOR AND DEACON BRIAN AND MRS. ANDREA BEYERL

RECEIVE THE CARITAS AWARD FOR SERVICE

At the Catholic Charities annual Caritas Gala, Nov. 5 at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany, a diocesan priest,

two couples and the Knights of Columbus were cited for their advocacy, service, inspiration and excellence. Father Edward Lambro, director of development and public relations for diocesan Catholic Charities, served as master of ceremonies for the event. Bishop Serratelli gave the opening remarks and blessing, praising, “the outstanding work of our Catholic Charities agencies in the Diocese of Paterson and the worthy honorees of the Caritas Awards.” The purpose of the Caritas Awards is to recognize individuals and/or organizations that are committed to mission of all Catholic Charities agencies: to serve, to advocate, to inspire and to excel.

The Caritas Award for Service was presented by Sam Pirozzi, executive director of Straight & Narrow, to our own parishioners Deacon and Doctor Brian and Mrs. Andrea Beyerl, who, “with love and a desire to serve as a witness to Christ’s love for all people, have by word and deed sought to be of service wherever there is need or pain.” Brian is a doctor, who is senior partner at Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists and also serves as a permanent deacon at Assumption Parish where his wife, Andrea, a nurse, serves as an Extraordinary Minster of Holy Communion, and is also on our Bereavement Committee. Andrea led them to become foster parents for Catholic Family and Community Services in the 1990s, which led to the adoption of the youngest of the couple’s four children. She is also a volunteer with Atlantic Home Care and Hospice and the Community Soup Kitchen in Morristown. Dr. Beyerl said he has always considered his medical practice “to be a healing ministry.” He also volunteers at the medical clinic at Straight and Narrow in Paterson. And of course we are truly grateful for his service as a Deacon at Assumption, preaching and participating in the life of the Church, and administering the sacraments of the Eucharist, Baptism and Marriage. We are so proud of Deacon Brian and Andrea, and we are very blessed to have them in our parish family.

Bishop Serrratelli stands with Caritas award winners and presenters at the 2016 Caritas Benefit Gala

at Birchwood Manner on November 5, 2016. Deacon Brian and Mrs. Andrea Beyerl are to the right of the Bishop.
