Northwestern Ontario is a Gold Powerhouse!

Exploration/Mining companies are expanding or continuing to move closer to actual production in the region:

Goldcorp-Musselwhite Mine will complete a $90M un-derground development in late 2018. An internal shaft is under construction and an advanced materials handling system. The goal is to achieve 300,000 ounces plus of an-nual gold production. In addition, Goldcorp has opened a major administration office in Thunder Bay.

Barrick-Hemlo (William Mines) announced reserves of 25.8 M tonnes of gold ore grading 1.92 g/t gold with mine life extended to 2026. A new camp scale geological model has been completed. Engineering and mine development will follow.

New Gold Inc.’s Rainy River Mine commenced commercial gold production in late 2017. The mine will add 325,000 ounces of annual gold production to the Northwestern Ontario total. 35 Thunder Bay mine services and supply companies worked on the mine and mill (2015 – 2017), with contracts totalling over $80M.

Greenstone Gold Mines Ltd. completed the Environmental Impact Study/Environmental Assessment for the Hardrock Project, Geraldton, with a formal submission in mid-2017 to both Federal and Provincial Governments. Indigenous consultation, permit advancement and efforts to optimize the 2016 Feasibility Study continue for this 4.9 million ounce deposit.

The Goldcorp-Cochenour Mine Project, Red Lake, contin-ues to be test developed and mined, with scheduled pro-duction by late 2018. Annual gold production contribution from Cochenour to the Red Lake Complex gold production is forecast by Goldcorp to be 30,000 – 50,000 ounces per year by 2019.

Treasury Metals at the Goliath Project, Dryden, released an updated Preliminary Economic Assessment for 2017 and plan to complete a Pre-feasibility study in 2018. Explora-tion infill drilling and condemnation drilling have been completed. The Environmental Assessment process contin-ues for this future 80,000 ounce per year gold producer.

Pure Gold Mining Inc., for the Madsen Project, Red Lake, announced additional gold resources at the Russet South and Fork satellite deposits. The indicated gold resource is now 1.74 million ounces of gold at Madsen. The Feasibility Study will be completed in 2018.

Rubicon Minerals – Phoenix Mine completed a significant exploration program in 2017. Structural re-interpretation and geological modelling is 50% complete. Goal is to pro-duce a new mineral resource, and undertake underground development and trial mining in 2018. A new Feasibility Study will follow.

Harte Gold is developing the Sugar Zone Gold Deposit located north of White River. Mine development and mill construction are underway. Production is scheduled to start in mid-2018 at a rate of 540 tonnes per day.

First Mining Finance’s most notable global gold assets are located in Northwestern Ontario and include: Goldlund Mine (SW of Sioux Lookout), Pickle Crow Mine (Pickle Lake), Cameron Lake (SE of Kenora) and their largest gold deposit, Springpole Lake (E of Red Lake). Total resources for the four gold deposits are 8.55 million ounces.

Premier Gold Mines targeted higher grade gold mineraliza-tion along the Hasaga Deep Target, Hasaga property, Red Lake. The property currently hosts 1.12 million ounces of gold.

Confederation College - Workforce Development Division

Confederation College is a public sector community college established in 1967, with 50+ programs, in areas of Engineering Technologies, Business, Health, Aviation and Aboriginal programs. The College offers a number of corporate and customized business and industry training programs and services, including upgrading, pre-technology, apprenticeship and em-ployment.

In Northwestern Ontario, the College operates nine campuses, a main campus in the City of Thunder Bay, and regional campuses in Fort Frances, Dryden, Ke-nora, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Geraldton, Marathon and Wawa.

Confederation College has a history of supporting the mining industry in Northwestern Ontario, working with Indigenous communities in preparing local work-forces and with communities to develop diversified and sustainable strategies. Overall, the College has managed over $100M in

training and development projects, worked with many Indigenous communities and established important government, business and industry networks in Northwestern Ontario, and across Canada.

Mining related programs range from semi-skilled to skilled operators, including Mining Essentials, Dia-mond Drilling, Mining Techniques, Welding, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, Construction, Heavy Equipment, Plumbing, Water, Truck Driver, Camp Ser-vices and Security.

We continue to work with our Indigenous communi-ties to build a better bridge from training and educa-tion to employment.

Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration

Providing Mining Education and Research in Northern Ontario

Established in 2014, Lakehead University’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining & Exploration (CESME) encourages and supports research, educa-tion and outreach activities regarding the nature and impacts of mineral resource exploration and extrac-tion particularly in Northern Ontario.

Guided by the CESME Advisory Board and led by Director, Dr. Peter Hollings, CESME is collaborating with industry, public sector, and community partners to spearhead cutting-edge research in the following three areas:

• Mineral exploration and mineral extraction including mine development and mineral pro-cessing

• Social, economic and environmental impacts of mineral resource exploration and extraction

• First Nations and Métis engagement

One of the primary goals of CESME is to recruit and foster faculty, postdoctoral fellows, postgraduate, graduate, and undergraduate student participation. The following are some current examples:

• Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Karl Skogstad, has now joined the Department of Economics at Lake-head and continues his research into the eco-nomic impact of mining in the region.

• Thanks to funding from Churchill Diamonds and the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) CESME is hosting a second Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the “Geochronology and mineral chemistry as exploration tools for eco-nomic diamond deposits in the Superior Prov-ince”.

• Dr. Dawn Mills has been recruited as a Program Development Coordinator to develop a certifi-cate program to provide training opportunities to First Nations community members.
