MINING ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTThe Department of Mining Engineering at IIT Kharagpur started in 1956 with the first batch of B.Tech students. It has played a pioneering role in the introduction of modern mining engineering curriculum in India. The faculty members are reputed for writing text books, publishing international journal papers, and actively involving themselves in industrial consultancy and short term courses.
CLIMATE AND ACCESSIBILITYIn August, delegates can expect monsoon weather conditions. Kharagpur is well connected by rail from all parts of the country. From most big towns and cities the participants can reach Kharagpur by direct trains.
MODE OF PAYMENT
SPONSORED PARTICIPANTSThe course fee is Rs. 20,000/- per participant which will include course material and instructions. The accommodation of the participants will be arranged at the Technology Guest House of the institute at their own expense (non-residential course).

![Page 2: MINING ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT MINE PLANNING AND … · software with special emphasis on MineSight, Surpac and Whittle will be held on the last day of the short course. INTRODUCTION](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022040115/5e778b2f46a2840c9b370aa2/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Advances in information technology and mine planning
software have made the tedious job of mine planning and
design easier to complete. However, the complexity of the
large number of software available for this purpose makes it
difficult to perform the tasks without a clear understanding
of the principles of strategic mine planning and design. With
re-defined procedures for developing the Indian mining and
exploration industries, and with the advent of new methods
of resource classification and allocation through the system
of auctions, mining professionals need an understanding of
the new terminologies and classification procedures so that
they can provide better guidance to a variety of
stakeholders.
This short course is tailored to the needs of surface and
underground mining engineers and geologists to address the
processes of Strategic Mine Planning and Design in coal and
non-coal operations starting from the pre-feasibility design
stage to long-term and planning and scheduling. Recent
changes in the methods of designation of mineral resources
and reserves will be discussed to expose the participants to
the new terminologies and procedures. This will include
discussions on the UNFC and CRIRSCO templates for
developing different levels of study reports. The course will
also include a one-day hands-on training on mine planning
and design software such as MineSight, Surpac, and Whittle.
The following topics will be covered in the programme:Ÿ Pre-feasibility and Feasibility StudiesŸ Resource and reserve classificationŸ Ore reserve estimation and geostatisticsŸ Cut-off grade estimationŸ Design of optimum pitŸ Slope and waste dump stability analysesŸ Production schedulingŸ GPS and GIS applications in mine planningŸ Underground mining methodsŸ Stope design principlesŸ Design of underground mine layouts Ÿ Ventilation planningŸ Development of accesses
