Solvent Recycling of Waste Solvents

Purchase a solvent still which distills off the solvents and concentrates the solids.

Solvent stills are designed to be explosion proof.

Liquid hazardous waste can be reduced by 85% in some cases.

Reclaimed solvents cannot necessarily be reused t o thin or dilute paints and coatings.

Reclaimed solvents are often sent off-site and sold to a third party who further distills it and then re-sells the reconstituted, clean solvents.

Reclaimed solvents can often be used on-site to clean spray equipment.

Solvent stills are available with a wide range of capacities, including 55-gallon and more.

Apparently, the rule of thumb regarding total installed cost is $1,000 per 1 gallon capacity.

Minimize Emission of Hazardous Air Pollutants

0 Avoid solvent blends which contain significant concentrations of solvents listed on EPAs 33/50 list. These include:

* Methylethylketone (MEK)

* Methylisobutylketone (MIBK)

0 One such solvent blend which can apparently be used to clean-up spray equipment and hoses carrying alkyds, epoxies and polyurethanes comprises:

This blend has been tested for its ability to dissolve alkyds, polyurethanes and epoxies, and had been found to be most effective.

Purchase solvents which have good solvency, but have relatively high boiling points.

0 Several states have requirements that have provisions similar to the following:

South Coast Rule 1107, (bl(3-72

* A person shall not use VOC-containing materials which have a VOC content of more than 200 g/L of material for surface preparation or clean-up, excluding cleaning of coating application equipment.

* A person shall not use VOC-containing materials which have a VOC content more than 200 g/L of material for stripping any coating governed by this rule.

* Containers used for the disposal of cloth or paper used in surface preparation, clean-up, and the removal of uncured coating shall be closed except when depositing or removing the cloth or paper for the container.

* Containers used for disposal of cloth or paper used in stripping cured coating shall be closed except when depositing or removing the cloth or paper from the container.

* A person shall not use VOC-containing materials for the clean-up of equipment used in coating operations unless:

(a) the VOC is collected in a container which is closed when not in use and is properly disposed of, such that the VOC is not emitted into the atmosphere; or

(b) the spray equipment is disassembled and cleaned in a solvent vat, and the vat is closed when not in use; or

(c) the clean-up materials contain no more than 200 g/L of VOC per liter of material.

Consider purchasing enclosed spray gun washers

Consider installing hose cleaners which cause turbulence between air and solvent during the cleaning of hoses. Considerably less solvent is used to clean the hoses, but most of that which is used, evaporates and cannot be collected.
