Around The Clubs
(22 Film & 10 Photographic)
Thank you Burnley for your Club News
The May Bank Holiday weekend was a busy period for members of Burnley Film Makers.
Saturday the 29th May was Southport's Inter Club Competition. Mike breeze and club Sec-
retary Keith Widdup made the journey over to Southport to support the Burnley's entry.
Representing BFM this year was David Crossley's film "All Aboard the Rib", a record of a
trip taken to view the wildlife off the coast of South Wales. Fortunately, it was a lovely
calm day and David was able to put together an excellent video of the spectacular trip.
There were five entries in all representing clubs from the Wirral, Bolton Morecambe,
Burnley and, of course, Southport.
The day started with a little gremlin in the sound system, those blighters do get about! but
after a while the proceedings were under way.
Each club supplied a Judge and at the end of their deliberations I'm pleased to say BFM
came joint first with the entry from Morecambe Bay Movie Makers, congratulations to
them as well.
Come the Sunday and three members from BFM were out and about in local village Worst
Horne. The village was holding its first ever Scarecrow Festival. Burnley Film Makers had
been asked if they would produce a video of the event and as we're always looking for lo-
cal items to include in our Annual Newsreel, this was an ideal event. With some eighty ex-
hibits to get around it was a long day and our intrepid cameramen covered something in
the region of at least five miles each trekking round, on foot I might add, to get to see all
the entries.
After a "wee dram" or two and a good night’s sleep, it was off up to Higham, the village
where BFM holds its weekly meetings, in the Village Hall. It was the Annual Craft Fair.
This year there was an added interest. A Maypole. This hadn't been seen or used on
Mayday for over sixty years. When it was rediscovered in the cellar of the local Church it
was decided to bring it back into use.
Children from the village school learnt some traditional Mayday dances and these were
performed on the green in front of the church.
This was another event ideal for our Newsreel production. So, Mike Breeze, Dave Berry
and Keith Widdup were on hand to record the event.
The staff and children from St John's school were to be commended on an excellent per-
formance, I'm sure that after this it will be an annual event.

After this Keith was back up to Worsthorne to find out who had won the main awards in
the Scarecrow Competition and film the presentation of the trophies.
It was a long and busy weekend but hopefully the end products will have made it all worth-
while.
