Your Character

! You are a person who decided to go on an adventure. You have basic skills like running, sprinting, and jumping. You press the space bar to jump. W,A,S, and D allow you to move. To sprint double tap the W key. You can sneak by holding shift. Sneaking will not get mobs attention and you can’t fall but you are very slow. To open your inventory press I. Left clicking allows you to destroy blocks while right clicking places blocks.! In survival you need to work to get resources and survive. You will eventually have to fight monsters. In creative mode you have an unlimited supply of everything and you can’t die.

! In Minecraft there are lots of different blocks. This book will most likely not be able show all the blocks. These next few chapters will show the blocks of different categories. Here is the start of the list.

Bedrock (also called Adminium) is an indestructible block found on the lowest 5 layers of a map. It also appears at the top and bottom 4 layers of The Nether.

Redstone Ore is somewhat common at levels 1 to 19 and appears in veins of 2 to 6 blocks. Use an iron or diamond pickaxe to mine.

Coal oar is a common mineral block that can be found on nearly any level.

Iron ore is a relatively common ore found on levels 0 to 67. Mine it with a stone pickaxe or better.

Natural Blocks

Gold ore is a relatively rare ore that is found on levels 0 to 35 in veins of 2 to 8 blocks.

Lapis Lazuli is an ore block found at levels 0 to 32, with the highest concentration at level 19. Mine it using a stone pickaxe or better.

Considered the most desirable mineral in the game, Diamond Ore can only be found on layers 2 to 17.

Emerald Ore is the rarest occurring ore in the game. They generate on levels 4 to 31.

Dirt is a common block. Use a shovel to dig for best results.

Used in Farming, farmlands are created when dirt or grass is tilled with a hoe.

Grass is found on the top blocks of dirt layers not directly covered by leaves or liquids.

Found on top of grass blocks, tall grass drops seeds when destroyed. Players can move freely through tall grass.

Gravel is a block that is normally found in pits, underwater, on beaches, or in The Nether.

Natural Blocks

Ice is a block that is formed when water is exposed to snow.

Leaves are an abundant block found on every tree. Leaf blocks occasionally yield a sapling or an apple when destroyed. Placeable leaf blocks can be obtained by using shears on them.

Obsidian is a rare, hard block that is created when water is placed on a Lava source block. It can be used to make portals to The Nether.

Sand is a natural block commonly found near water or in deserts.

Sandstone is a solid block that is commonly found under or near large patches of sand.

Clay blocks are found on the surface by bodies of water and are usually surrounded by sand.

Snow is a block modifier which is present in areas that have snowfall.

One of the primary building materials. Cobblestone can be turned back into smooth stone by smelting it in a furnace.

Mossy Cobblestone, also known as Moss Stone, it is cobblestone covered in moss.

A useful and plentiful resource, Stone blocks are used for building and crafting.

Natural Blocks

Vines can be placed on walls and ceilings. They will also hang on leaves in Swamps. They take as long to break as leaves and drop nothing. However, they are collectable by using shears.

Cobwebs are generated in Abandoned Mine Shafts and are made in particularly large amount next to cave spider spawners. They can also be found in Strongholds, especially in the libraries.

A piece of wood from tree trunks. Wood can be harvested by punching/chopping.

Water is a liquid which can be placed by a player using a bucket.

Lava is a liquid which gives off light and can set other objects on fire. It can be collected by right-clicking it with a bucket.selected

Building blocks

The coal block is used as a compact method for storing coal.

The iron block is used primarily as a compact method of storing iron ingots.

The gold block is used primarily as a compact method of storing gold ingots.

Lapis lazuli is used as a decoration, or for compact storage of lapis lazuli dye.

Redstone blocks are compacted blocks can be used as a redstone power source.

The diamond block is used as a decoration, or as a compact method for storing diamond gems.

The emerald block is used as a decoration, or as a compact method for storing emerald gems.

The snow block is used for building, decoration and storing snowballs. To convert back to snowballs, place the block and destroy it with a shovel.

Brick is a durable block that resists explosions well. Brick blocks do not occur naturally on a generated map.

Brick slabs are half the height of a normal block. Similar to stairs, they allow a player to change elevation without jumping.

Glass is a transparent block that allows sunlight to pass through it. Glass breaks easily and returns nothing when destroyed, so place carefully.

Glass Panes are a block that, when something is placed on the sides of it, the pane will become shaped depending on what's surrounding it.

Hardened clay is a durable block that resists explosions well. They do not occur naturally on a generated map.

Hay blocks can be used to feed horses, to store wheat, or just as decoration.

Nether quartz blocks are compacted blocks of raw quartz found in the Nether.

Quarts slabs are half the height of a normal block. Similar to stairs, they allow a player to change elevation without jumping.

Dropped by sheep when they are killed, but best obtained from sheep by using shears. Wool can be dyed into 16 different colors and is used for decoration or crafting.

The Nether

What is the Nether? The Nether is a world where almost all monsters live. You can see the monsters in Mobs.

Glowstone is a glowing block found only in The Nether. It typically grows in clusters either very high or at ground level.

Nether bricks are blocks found only in the The Nether. They're the main material in Nether runes and can be used to craft Nether Brick Stairs and Nether Brick Fences. Other blocks made of Nether Brick are in Building Blocks.

Wall blocks made from Nether Bricks, 1.5 blocks high, that cannot be jumped by most creatures. Used primarily as decoration, or to contain/restrict an area.

Netherrack (also called Netherstone, Bloodstone, or Red Mossy Cobblestone), is a block that is found only in The Nether.

The Nether

Soul Sand (also called Slow sand, Quick sand, Mud, or Nethermud) is a block which is only found in the nether. You can plant Nether Warts on Soul Sand.

Nether wart is a grow-able plant in the nether. Placing it in Soul Sand is the only place the nether wart will grow.

The Nether Portal provides a gateway into The Nether

Cracked Stone Brick is one of the main blocks that make up Strongholds.

Mossy Stone Brick is one of the main blocks that make up Strongholds.

An ore from the nether. This resource is used to build many mechanisms that deal with redstone. This ore is very common and can be found on any level of the nether.

Beacons are a sort of defensive tool when placed on top of a pyramid made up of a mixture of diamond, emerald, gold, and iron blocks. They buff the player within a certain area-of-effect and lasts for a short eight seconds.

The bookshelf is used as a decoration or as an inefficient furnace fuel.

The crafting table is the staple of any crafter, used to create many objects.

Anvils are used to rename and repair items. Unlike crafted repairs, anvils can keep enchantments, and add new ones.

Cauldrons are used to store water. They can fill glass bottles to make water bottles. They hold enough water for three water bottles.

The enchantment table allows users to use experience levels to enchant weapons, armor, and tools.

Used to smelt items. Smelting requires fuel such as coal, charcoal, wood, lava in a bucket, or most things made of wood.

Used to play music with discs such as music disc (gold). Right-click the jukebox with a music disc selected to play it.

Upon being set on fire, or energized with redstone, TNT will begin smoking and flashing. After 4 seconds, it will explode, damaging surrounding blocks and creatures.

Mobs! Mobs are creatures in Minecraft. Here are some.

Friendly

Bats are a passive mob that appear in large enclosed spaces similar to caverns. Health:

Wolves spawn in well lit, grassy areas. Wolves will attack nearby sheep, and only attack players if

provoked.

Tamed wolves feature a red collar and less aggressive eyes. They will protect you if you are attacked, attack something that YOU are attacking, and follow you wherever you go.

Ocelots are a passive mob that can be tamed similarly to wolves.

Cats are the tamed version of ocelots.

Mobs

Chickens spawn in grassy, well-lit areas. They drop feathers and raw chicken when killed and occasionally lay eggs.

Pigs spawn in well-lit areas, and drop porkchops when killed. If you light a pig on fire to kill it, a cooked porkchop will drop.

Sheep are passive mobs that spawn in grassy, well-lit areas. Sheep can spawn with white, light grey, grey, black, brown or pink wool. You can collect the wool withshears and die the wool later.

Cows are passive mobs that drop leather and beef when killed.

Mooshrooms are a variety of cow that has mushrooms sprouting on its body.

Mobs

Horses can be tamed and ridden by right clicking it multiple times while holding no items.

Squid are passive mobs found in water of any depth and any location. When killed, they drop ink sacs.

Villagers are passive non-player-characters that appear in randomly generated villages. They have several "professions" in their communities. Depending on their profession, they will trade various items for emeralds.

Iron Golems are a mob that shows up in villages. They attack hostile mobs that attack the inhabitants. To show their friendliness, they may present a poppy.

Snow Golems are a mob created by the player. They throw snowballs at other mobs and leave a trail of snow behind them.

Over World

Creepers are hostile mobs that emit a hissing sound followed by an explosion when in close proximity of a player.

Zombies are aggressive mobs that spawn in dimly lit areas on the surface and in caves. Similar to skeletons, Zombies are set on fire when exposed to sunlight.

Skeletons are hostile mobs that shoot arrows at players if spotted. They spawn at night on the surface as well as in unlit areas and caves. When exposed to sunlight, Skeletons will catch on fire.

Spider Jockeys are Spiders that spawn with a Skeleton riding on its back. They spawn in dimly lit areas on the surface and in caves. They

function as two separate entities, and if one mob is killed, the other will still function normally.

Spiders have glowing red eyes and spawn in dimly lit areas on the surface and in caves. When

exposed to sunlight, they will no longer attack the player unless provoked.

The Cave Spider is a hostile mob with a blue skin and is smaller, more dangerous, and much more

rarer than the regular spider.

The Enderman is a rare mob shaded black with long arms and legs. Unlike players and most monsters they are three blocks high.

Zombie Pigmen are neutral mobs that spawn in dimly lit areas in The Nether, or when a pig is struck by lightning on the surface.

Mobs

The Silverfish pops out of stone bricks found in strongholds. If the player mines these

blocks Silverfish may pop out and attack them.

Witches are a hostile mob similar-looking to villagers.

Slimes are hostile mobs that spawn deep underground in the bottom 16 layers of the map, most often in large, cavernous spaces or open mines. They come in 4 different sizes each with its own health and damage.

Blazes are a flying mob that spawn in the The Nether and shoot fireballs.

Magma cubes are a mob only found in the Nether.

Ghast are large mobs that float in the air and shoot fireballs out of their mouths. They normally spawn in The Nether, under any light level. There is a small chance they will spawn near portals outside the Nether.

A floating boss mob with three heads and skeletal frame. It is a boss mob, similar to the Ender

Dragon so it has 200 hit points.

The Ender Dragon is considered the boss mob for the game and appears in the End World. The dragon has 200 hit points but can be healed by nearby Ender Crystals.

Redstone Part 1

Redstone is what you use to create machines.

Redstone Ore is somewhat common at levels 1 to 19 and appears in veins of 2 to 6 blocks. Use an iron or diamond pickaxe to mine.

Redstone torches provide constant power in redstone circuits, and act as an inverter, or NOT-gate.They also provide soft light (level 7).

When used on the ground, redstone dust will lay redstone wire. It's also used to craft items that work with redstone circuits and increase

the potency of several potions.

Redstone Wire is created by placing redstone dust on the ground. Redstone Wires are used to build redstone circuits.

Redstone Repeaters can extend the current of a redstone wire beyond the 15 block limit, or to delay the incoming signal.

Redstone Comparators function similarly to redstone repeaters. However, it receives two signals.

Pistons are used to push between 1 and 12 adjacent blocks forward 1 space. It can also push players, mobs and many objects (specifically, "entities"). Sticky pistons can be used to push OR PULL a single block 1 space. Pistons can also block the flow of fluids when extended.

Sticky pistons are used to pull/push a nearby block 1 space. Once it extends into a block, the block will stick to it. Sticky pistons can also block the flow of fluids when extended.

The lever used to toggle a redstone circuit between two states: "on" and "off".

The wooden button is used to toggle a redstone circuit to the "on" state. After .9 seconds, it automatically reverts back to the "off" state.

The dropper is a block that "drops" items it holds whenever it is activated.

Provides a convenient entrance that you can open and close. Toggle them by right clicking.

Also called a Hatch, a trapdoor is essentially a door that lays flat on the ground.

Redstone Part 1

Fence gates are a type of door that can be opened both inward and outwards. They are opened by right-clicking and can interact with redstone.

Hoppers are items that, when items fall on top of it, will automatically store items in either itself, or into a container it's attached to such as a chest.

Tripwire hooks are a type of switch activated by stepping on them, or running across a string that hangs between a pair of hooks.

The note block plays a note when hit or when powered by a redstone circuit.

Used to play music with discs such as music disc (gold). Right-click the jukebox with a music disc selected to play it.

! Redstone is what you use to create machines. Buttons, levers, pressure plates, and more are used as switches. Redstone wire can only bring a current 15 blocks so redstone repeaters extend and delay currents.

Transportation

A vehicle that provides easier movement through oceans or any large body of water.

Minecarts are rideable objects that you place on rails. They can carry people, creatures or items(storage). They move much faster than walking. Get in by right-clicking once placed.

The minecart with a furnace moves on rails similar to a normal minecart, but accepts coal (lasts about 4 minutes) or charcoal as fuel for powered movement. Can be used to push other minecarts.

A minecart with a chest operates just like a normal minecart, while being able to carry a chest of items. Right-click to add items to the cart. These carts cannot be ridden.

Transportation

A minecart with a hopper combines the functionality of both the minecart and the hopper.

A minecart with TNT combines the functionality of both the minecart and TNT.

Rails are tracks that minecart-based vehicles can move along.

The powered rail acts as a brake or an accelerator to minecarts that pass through it. It is powered by redstone wire.

Transportation

Detector rails are used exactly like a pressure plate. It sends a redstone signal when a minecart passes over it to all adjacent blocks.

Activator rails function like regular rails except that they enable TNT Minecarts or Minecarts with Hoppers.

Note: There are plenty of blocks not in this book.
