Mindanao is hailed the food basket of the Philippines:

We produce 95% of the country’s banana, rubber, pineapple 

65% of the country’s total livestock 

62% the country’s total coconut 

But, we have the highest incidence of hunger in the country.

Mindanao has

one of the world’s largest deposits of gold (Comval province),

copper (Cotabato), and nickel (Surigao del Norte)

90% of the country’s timber production 

50% of the country’s aquatic products 

But we have the highest poverty level in the country.

14 out of the 20 poorest provinces are in Mindanao

Mindanao has

the lowest literacy rate in the country

• the highest crime rate in the Philippines… consistently 

• the poorest region in the country (ARMM)(GDP PhP3,433 standard GDP PhP 14,186)

• Around 6 million people leaving Mindanao to become

domestic helpers overseas

6,274 pesos per month for a family of five

Around 4.67 million Mindanawons are below the poverty line.(NSCB 2007)

rural areas.

The urban poor are from major urban areas:Metro Manila

Metro Davao

67% of the poorest families have heads who

didn’t graduate from elementary. 

40% of the poorest families have at least 6 members.

The case of NFA rice program

The lack of the rule of law in Mindanao led to

armed conflicts,

armed conflicts which hamper development,

hampered development which causes poverty.
