Everythingweheartodayabouteco-conscioushomeconstructionconfirmswhatgardenershaveknownallalong.Home landscape can contribute to agreenerenvironmentaswellasenhancebeauty and value. Simple planningcanhelpregulatetemperature,reduceenergyconsumption,andyieldseasonalproducewithoutexcessivewateruse.

Lawncovering25%ofthelandscapedarea,infullsunandwateredseparately,can provide humidity and a coolingappearance. Soilpreparationwithatleast1cubicyardofsoilconditionerper100squarefeet(10x10area)iscriticaltothesuccessofthegrass.Chooseoneofthetallfescues,whichuseone-thirdless water than other varieties whenestablished. Water early in the dayto conserve evaporation and preventdehydration.Deepwatering2to3timesaweekduringthewarmgrowingseasonshouldensureahealthylawn.

Blueberries and Pomegranates – The new ‘super foods’

Blueberriesandpomegranateshavebothbeeninthenewslatelyasthenew‘superfoods’thatbothtastegoodandaregoodforyou.

So be good to yourself and your yard, grow some antioxidants today!

Green is the “New Green” Besidesthebenefitsofcooling,shade,

lightandheating,treestakeincarbondioxideandreleaseoxygen.

The rightplant for the rightarea– select plants to grow to their fullpotentialbasedontheirgrowthhabit,matureshape,andyourplantingarea.Allowingtheoptimalspacingduringtheplanningstageminimizesmaintenanceand stress to the plant later on. Forsmallerareaslookatcompactvarietiesorplantsthathavethevisualfeelyouwantbutfittheconfinesofyourgarden.Usemulchesatleast2inchesdeeptohelpretainmoisture&preventweeds.

Choose plants that grow in yourenvironment. It’s always fun to addsomething new or different but maystruggle due to heat, wind or cold.Experiment with those plants incontainersfirst.Ifsuccessfulafteroneortwoyears,moveintoyourlandscape.Containers should be large & fairlydeepforbestresults.Groupavarietyofcontainerstogetherinkeyareasformaximum effect. Plan a drip systemforyourpotsbeforeplanting,makingiteasiertowater.Usewaterretentivesoilsoraddpolymerstoyoursoilmixatplanting.

Fruittreesplantedinfullsunwithopen ground, free from competitionof other plants, can yield a bountifulharvest. If space is limited try themespalieredalongafenceorwall.

Veggie gardens in raised beds can

beplantedintensively,withplantsofsimilar water needs together. Plantbasedonheight,witheasilyharvestedlow-growing plants like radishes,summersquash,andbushbeansleadinguptotomatoesonframesatthebackorcenterofabed.Wintervegetablescanmake this a year-roundventure.Enjoyingtrulylocalproducefromyourown garden might be the best partof going green in your eco-consciouslandscape!

Take Care of Your Soil . . . And Your Soil Will Take Care of Your Plants

Gardeningisnotasmuchabouttakingcareofplantsasitisabouttakingcareofsoil.Ifyoursoilisamendedforimprovedtexture,containsabalancedsupplyofnutrientsandmineralsandisteamingwithmicroscopiclife,yourplantswillprobablythrivewithoutmuchadditionaleffortfromyou.

Almostanysoilcanbeimprovedsignificantly,however,simplybyaddingcompostororganicmaterial.

3-4"oforganicmaterialsuchasyard compost, Gold Rush or Bumper Cropworkedintothetop8"ofsoilwillyielda12"deeplayerofsuitablegardensoilthatdrainswell,nurtureslifeandproducesarespectablegardenharvest.Ongoingcareofthissoilwillresultinagardenthatproducesbetterandbetterastheyearspass.

THE FOLLOWING IS A DO LIST

THAT CAN HELP YOU NURTURE YOUR SOIL:Raise the bed: Raisingaplantingbedwillimmediatelyimprovethedrainage(whichisimportantinourheavyclaysoils.)Italsoservestoraisethesoiltemperaturesviasolarexposuresotherootswakeearlierinthespringandextendtheseasonfurtherintowinter.OrmakeyourgardeninglifeveryeasybygrowinginraisedbedsorcontainersusingapremiumgardenpottingsoilsuchasMaster’sPridePottingSoil.

Incorporate organic material: Organiccompostparticlesofcompostactaswedgestoholdheavyclaysoilsopen,allowingwatertodrainmorefreelythroughthesoilandalsopermittingairtooccupymoreofthespacesbetweenthesoilparticles.Rootsmusthaveair.

Add Gypsum: Gypsum(calciumsulfate)hasmysteriouspropertiesthatallowclaytobecomelessstickythisfeatureallowsbuiltupsaltstoleachdownthroughthesoil.Gypsumimprovesthedrainage.

Mulch: Mulchingthestop3”ofsoilwillcoolthesoil,reduceweedsandcreatealayerofcompostingactivityatthesoillevel.Thislayerbecomesanappealinghabitatforearthwormsandotherbeneficialsoilcrittersthatworktoimprovethetextureandstructureofthesoil.

Add mild fertilizers/include minors: Minorsareallthemineralsandelementthatarerequiredinverysmallquantitiestofurtherplantgrowth.Overtimesoilisdepleted.Whenallminorsareavailablethewholeprocessofnurturingtheplantworksefficiently,producingahealthyplant.

Water appropriately: Mostpeopleareinthehabitofwateringtoooftenorirregularly.Ifyouarewateringdaily,lightenup.Farmersoftenwaterdeeplyonlyonceaweekor10days.Certainly2-3wateringsaweekthroughthewarmmonthsaretypicalandacceptable.Lessoftenispossiblewithweaning.

Add warmth and light: Placingagardenintherightlightisimportant,notonlyfortheplant’sparticularneeds,butalsofortheaddedbenefitofextrawarmthtoextendtheseason.

Enjoy gardening: Gardeningismuchlessachoreifthebasicneedsaremetatthesoillevel.Trytakingcareofyoursoilandwatchtheresthappenwithmuchlesseffort.Youwillbeblessedwiththeresults!

Japanese MaplesWhat could be more beautiful than

a Japanese Maple unfurling its delicateleavesinthespring?JapaneseMapleshaveenjoyedmanyyearsofpopularity inourgardensduetothevarietiesavailableforourmanyvarieddesignsandlocations.

AtAldenLanewecarryaconsiderablerangeofJapaneseMaplesthattoleratethehotinteriorvalleysummers.Theythriveinmorningsunwithsomeprotectionfromhotdrywinds.

Preparing your Japanese Maples for the first heat wave

and do we need to fertilize?Sometime during this May we will

experience our first mini heat wave ofthe year. Make sure all A.p. dissectumcultivars,forexample:LaceLeaf,CrimsonQueen,RedDragon,Seiryu,Butterflyandothers,areprotectedfromtheafternoonsun. They like early morning sun up to1pm. Filtered sun light or shade willhelp shelter your maple throughout theafternoon.Also,keeptheirsoilmoist,butnotsoggy.Mayisnotthetimetofertilize.If you do, they will develop long lankybranch,whichyoudonotwant.Forhardwater,seeourhardwaterformulaatAldenLane.

Some great sources for seeds and berryare Eschscholzia californica (California poppy), Coreopsis sp.
