On 14 February we held our P&C AGM. I would like to thank our community members for

Minchinbury Public School Pride Moments Mylee Paluch 

I’m Mylee Paluch and I’m going to tell you about 

my Oztag adventures. I’ve been playing Oztag since 

I was seven and now I’m in the 11 girls 

representative team. I travel to Coffs Harbour twice 

a year. In February this year I represented Nepean 

Panthers for State Cup and then in October I’m 

going to represent Western Sydney Tigers for 

Nationals. Playing at Coffs is an awesome 

experience. Through Oztag I have made so many 

new friendships while playing the game I love. This 

year my side came third out of the state for 11 girls. 

We were knocked out in the semi‐finals. I love this 

sport and hopefully one day I will play for the 

Australian team.

 P&C Mufti Day 

Thank you to everybody for supporting last week’s mufti day. On the day the P&C 

collected $559.45. That’s fantastic. 

But then…some students brought money in the next day ‐ $47! 

Total amount raised = $605.45 

We are so lucky to have such a supportive community. 

The P&C sincerely thanks our community. 

 

Raffle Stapling 

Thank you to the community members who came to our school to staple raffle ticket 

booklets. Believe it or not, 700 raffle books were prepared in less than an hour. 

 

Toonschool Workshop 

Our P&C voted to provide an opportunity for all students to attend an incursion at 

MPS. This is a workshop with an award winning cartoonist, Jeff Taylor. 

The cost per student is $6. The P&C will cover the cost of every student. This is 

$3042.

P&C Survey 

A survey has been sent home to all families asking them to nominate if a time 

change to the P&C meeting would mean that they would attend the meetings. 

 

If you would definitely come to a P&C meeting if the time was changed, please 

complete the survey and return it to the office.

ES1, Term 1 Overview 

Kindergarten students are learning new school and classroom routines this term. We have a motivated team of 

teachers leading our ES1 team in 2018 – Miss Khoury KK, Mrs Fisher KF, Miss Dimond KD and Miss Somi KS. Supporting our students with their learning are some experienced teachers including: Mrs Bartlett (LaST), Mrs Booth (teacher librarian and RFF), Mrs Elliot (teacher librarian and RFF), Mrs Anderson (RFF) and Ms Pears (RFF). 

KLA Overview Below is a brief overview of the content that will be studied in each KLA in Term 1:  English The unit of study this term is “Beginnings: 

Starting School”. Students will make personal 

responses to a variety of texts about school. 

Through visual literacy, students will focus on 

making connections as a comprehension 

strategy.  

 

Through the Get Reading Right Synthetic 

Phonics program we will break words into 

separate phonemes that can be blended 

together to read new words. 

The phonemes or sounds that we will focus 

on this term include:  s, m, c, t, g, p, a and o.  

The camera words or sight words that we will 

learn and memorise this term are:  I, the, 

was, to, are, she, he, is, the, and, for, a, on, 

am, went, to, can, we, are, like, my, in, see, 

me, girl and boy.  

 

To support the explicit teaching of reading 

and writing in the early years, modelled, 

guided and independent reading, writing, 

phonics, grammar, punctuation, speaking 

and listening lessons are embedded in daily 

literacy sessions.  

Mathematics 

The Mathematics K–10 Syllabus is organised 

into the three content strands with the 

components of working mathematically 

integrated into these strands. The 

mathematics strands include: number and 

algebra; measurement and geometry; and 

statistics and probability. Students are 

involved in daily short, sharp, focussed 

activities, which develops quick and efficient 

strategies to solve addition and subtraction 

problems.  

The other strands that ES1 cover include: 

Time, 2 Dimensional Space, Position and 

Data. 

 

Science and Technology and Geography 

Our “School Days’ unit is used to introduce 

students to the school environment. They 

will explore the school culture covering the 

reasons why we have to go to school and 

why rules in our school keep us safe. 

Students will discuss roles and 

responsibilities at school involving students, 

parents and teachers. Students will observe 

the different areas within the school and 

identify why these areas are needed in a 

school. Students will gather information 

about natural and built environments at 

school.

 

PD/H/PE To ensure that our students have a positive year, teachers are explicitly teaching social skills lessons to their students, focusing on the targeted rules and expectations that encourage them to be respectful, safe learners. Anti‐bullying lessons are a key focus in PD lessons and we are teaching this through “Allen’s Adventure”. PE lessons are an integral part of our weekly physical education program. This term we have a dance focus.    Homework Homework tasks will be set later in the term for all students in ES1 through “Calendar” pages, which are sent home at the beginning of each month. Written, social and physical tasks are included. Homework books with the completed tasks are to be returned on the last Friday of each month.  We also encourage students to read every night. Readers are sent home and changed weekly.  Phonemes/Sounds and Camera Words/Sight Word, flash cards will be sent home to encourage students to practice what is being learnt in class. Games and other ideas will be shared with families to make this fun.   Technology in the Classroom Students are learning to use various applications on the iPads, as well as on the Interactive TVs in classrooms.   

 Student Goals We will work on setting and achieving learning goals in reading, numeracy and social skills with students. Goals set this term are teacher directed. As the year continues, students will learn to set their own goals according to their individually needs.  

Parent Helpers If you are able to give up some of your time  to  help  in  the  kindergarten classrooms with various class activities please see your child’s teacher or  Miss Khoury for more information.

Notes sent home will have a deadline for payments and for notes to be returned to the school. No payments or notes will be accepted after the deadline has passed. If you will not be able to meet the deadline and wish your child to be involved in the ‘note activity’ you must contact the office BEFORE the deadline has passed.

Tell Them From Me student feedback survey 

(Term 1, 2018) 

We are delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools 

in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell 

Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that 

are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. 

The focus of the NSW‐wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement 

and effective teaching practices.  

More information about the survey is available at:

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with 

valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how 

engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact 

with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world 

have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the 

voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.  

We want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is 

conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. 

It will be administered during school hours between 12 March and 13 April. 

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. 

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent 

home with students. If you do not want your child or children to 

participate, please return the form to school. Copies of the form and FAQs 

are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information‐for‐

parents. 

The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages. 

   

MPS & Coles Sports for Schools This year Minchinbury PS is participating in the Coles Sports for Schools 

program. If you shop at Coles, please ask for the vouchers. There is a box in 

our front office ready to receive your vouchers.

Students coming to school with injuries 

Any student who comes to school with a broken arm, sprain or other 

injury, must have a risk assessment created for them in the office. This is so 

that we can support your child at school and that your child is also aware of 

taking necessary precautions when in the school grounds. 

Please do not send your child to school with an arm in a sling or plaster or 

any other support device, without first coming to the office or calling our 

office staff on 9832 1488. 

   

   

   

Seven new school zone offences 

The NSW government have recently updated school zone offences by increasing fines and demerit points. These changes will help to create and enforce a safer road environment in school zones. 

Included below are the changes to school zone offences. A full list can be found at:

To help schools keep the school zone safer for all pedestrians and drivers there are seven new traffic offences with new fines. 

None of the seven offences attract demerit points when committed elsewhere on the road but now in a school zone they each come with two points. 

The changes are: 

1. Stopping in intersection ‐ Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 

2. Stop within 20m of intersection (traffic lights) ‐ Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 

3. Stop within 10m of intersection (no traffic lights) ‐ Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 

4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights ‐ Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 

5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway ‐ Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $330 and 2 demerit points. 

6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel ‐ Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points. 

7. Parallel park close to dividing line ‐ Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.
