Terraced Houses.

AddressTelefoonstraat 44702 PH RoosendaalNetherlands

. These modern houses have a spectacular glass façade for theliving room and a void connecting the ground floor with the livingspaces on the upper floor, even though the client wanted atraditional housing floor plan, typical for this region of theNetherlands. Each house is designed with the possibility toenlarge or extend in the future. On the upper floor lie anatelier-space, two bedrooms and the bathroom. These and othermodern but reserved and deceptively simple designs givecredence to the firm’s slogan ‘specific neutrality’. In October2005 Olivier Thill received the biennial Rotterdam-Maaskant prizefor young architects.

. The Antwerp City Archives moved to the monumental 1859warehouse Sint-FelixPakhuis, completely restored and renovatedby Robbrecht en Daem (based in Gent, Belgium) together withGrontmij Vlaanderen. They renovated the whole interior in such away the internal structure of the building hardly changed andevery intervention can be undone. On the ground floor are publicfunctions like library and entrance. The next 4 floors areoccupied with archives, kept in 18 separate concrete containersto provide optimum atmosphere and fire-prevention. The attic iscompletely refurbished and renewed to make fit for a newreading hall, meeting rooms and conference halls. The wholeroof had to be replaced by a new wooden roof, appended with 3glass atriums for more daylight. These glass ‘boxes’ are seen fromthe nearby dock, the Willemdok. The concept of ‘wood’ wassubsequently used throughout the interior, for walls, floors andfurniture. All furniture was custom made, designed by Robbrechten Daem.

To house smaller sculptures, more fragile works fromthe collection and temporary exhibitions, Renaat Braem (1910 -2001), one of the most important Belgian post-war architects, was commissioned to design an exhibition hall. Renaat Braem, in1936 apprenticed to Le Corbusier, was influenced by the CIAMideology. Throughout his career he saw architecture as the art oforganising space in order to liberate human kind. His architecturegradually adopted a more organic style, which is apparent in thispavilion. The design is based on harmonic unity and organicinterwovenness of architecture and nature. The shape of theskylights emphasises even more the expressive sculpturalcharacter of the pavilion.

Atlas Building.

AddressCarnotstraat 1102060 AntwerpBelgium

. The Atlas building accommodates several departments for theadministration of the city of Antwerp such as culturalintegration, language offices and a material rent-out. There areopen plan offices and individual offices, a large reception spaceand an exhibition space at the ground floor. The renovatedconcrete structure and a new building form a courtyard thatconnects to the public exposition space. The deep constructionof the ground and first floor is compensated by a glazed atriumthat connects the floors visually and physically. The atriumallows natural light at the reception desk and also helps visitorsorientate themselves after they enter the building. A system ofconcrete columns and slabs, with a core containing circulationand sanitation, forms the structure of the building. Thegenerality of the open plan and the repetitive openings make itpossible for the program to change in the future.

De Natie.

AddressGijzelaarsstraat 20-222000 AntwerpBelgium

. This building's boundary lies within an historical inner courtyard. The project attempts -through its façades and its connection withthe inner courtyard- to fit effortlessly within this significant partof Antwerp. The façade's structure, the system of openings, theuse of limited materials and a sensitivity to its setting within thecourtyard all integrate the project into its context. At the sametime every floor gets its own large sun terrace. The shellconstruction was conceived in such a way that it could alsofunction as a finished state. This strategy saves material and timeand results in a more economical building, at the same timeenhancing flexibility and sustainability. Whilst the building suitesthe current tenant's needs perfectly, it offers a wide range ofpossibilities for later generations.

Zuiderterras Antwerp.

AddressErnest Van Dijckkaai 372000 AntwerpBelgiumhttp://www.zuiderterras.be

. bOb Van Reeth about the Zuiderterras: 'During a period of fortyyears an empty socle stood on this beautiful spot. With myproject I refer to what there was before: a classical building thatserved as a café just as the Zuiderterras now.' The Zuiderterras'name is derived from the promenade with the same name alongthe 'Schelde' river quays. Transparency of the building was thestarting point from bOb Van Reeth. This expresses itself in thechoice of the materials: metal combined with a lot of glass. Theinterior was further completed with warm wood and transparentlinen curtains. The alternation of mirrors and large windowscreates an atmosphere of infinite space and connection with theriver. Along the waterside of the restaurant you can observe thepassing vessels. Along the other side ogles the ancient city withits towers, but also here you can see the ships passing in themirrors.

MAS.

AddressNieuwpoortkaai 2000 AntwerpBelgiumhttp://www.mas.be/

. The MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) is located on an island (hetEilandje) in the heart of the old harbour close to the city centre. It will house 3 different collections (the Volkskundemuseum, theNational Maritime museum and partly Het Vleeshuis). The newmuseum was a winning design of an open architecturecompetition, a 60m high tower with stacked exhibition spaces, intotal 10 storeys. Each level is twisted 90 degrees to form a giantspiral. This glazed space becomes a vertical galleria. Elevatorsguide the visitors to the top of the building in a journey throughthe history of Antwerp and through the panoramas of the city. Onthe upper floor a restaurant, a conference room and a sky deckare situated. Square, docks and tower are designed to form onecontinuous space for exhibitions and events. The stacked conceptrefers to the old warehouses where goods were packed andstacked. Now Antwerp's history, traditions, artefacts, stories andobjects are stacked in one new warehouse.

Square Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen.

AddressTheaterplein 12000 AntwerpBelgiumhttp://www.stadsschouwburgantwerpen.be

. Studio Associato Secchi-Vigano (Milan, Italy) was invited toprepare a draft of the Theater Square and its surroundings. Thedesign runs from wall to wall and is characterized by threedistinctive features: transparent canopy structure, eliminatingthe difference in street level between the building of the theatreand thirdly the square with the "modern garden". The canopystructure and the garden provide the uniqueness of the newTheater Square and bring the square back "to scale" and inrelation to the built environment. With these changes the squareobtained it a better and more qualitative and aestheticappearance. The "modern garden" is a more green space, withenough trees and space to linger. The lifting of the level betweenthe theater and public space increases the convenience andaccessibility.

Roosendaal Pavilion.

AddressNieuwe Markt 234701 RoosendaalNetherlandshttp://www.paviljoenroosendaal.nl/

. The idea behind the urban proposal was that the pavilion woulddivide the square in two parts in such a way that you would stillhave the feeling of being on one big square. Because of themarket activities which occupy the entire square twice a week, the terraces of the pavilion needed to be placed above theground floor. Originally the terraces could only be reached bygoing through the pavilion. René van Zuuk decided to make theterraces accessible from the outside of the building as well so youcan walk from the square up onto the sloped roof to the terraces, letting the roof become a public area. The entrances from theroof to the building are made by cuts in the sloped surface, givingevery floor its own terrace. The rest of the roof acts as a bigstage which allows artists to give performances in front of thebuilding. On the south side the pavilion reaches its highest point. This part of the building cantilevers over the main entrance ofthe parking garage.
