Whether new or used, a vehicle is abig investment. Most people cannot affordto pay for a car outright and must makepayments on it instead, usually for three tofive years. Regular maintenance is a mustto protect such an investment and extendthe life of a vehicle. Without it, the vehiclecan break down and require big bucks torepair.

The days are getting warmer, the ice hasmelted and the birds have returned. That canmean only one thing-spring has sprung. For

many people, spring brings a return to thegreat outdoors. It can also mean less treach-erous and time consuming driving. No moredigging your car out just to go to work, driv-ing at a snail's pace and scraping, yes, thedreaded scraping.

While it's tempting to jump in your vehi-cle and enjoy the freedom that spring bringsto driving, keep in mind that like you, yourcar has been through a lot over the winter. There are several things that need to bechecked and prepared for spring driving.Depending on your level of car maintenanceexpertise, you may be able to do most ofthese things yourself. If not, have a profes-sional take a look under the hood.

Begin where the rubber meets the road-your tires. Check your tire pressure. The cor-rect pressure will be printed on the tire in PSI(pounds per square inch). If the tire is underthe recommended PSI, inflate it to that num-ber...DON'T OVER INFLATE IT. This may alsobe a good time to get your tires rotated. Thisshould be done every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.

For many areas, spring means rain so it's

a good time to check your wiper blades. There are few things more annoying than driv-ing in the rain with wiper blades that aren'tdoing their job. It's frustrating to have a bigsmear across your field of vision or a torn

wiper blade trailing across your windshield.Avoid these problems b checking your wiperblades. Replacing the blades is quick, easyand relatively inexpensive. Simply go intoyour local auto part store, tell them your vehi-cle make and model, and they'll direct you tothe correct replacement blade. Many storeswill even install them for you.

Another part that is easy to check is yourbattery. Pop the hood and make sure that theposts on the battery are clean. If there is anexcess of corrosion on the battery, considerreplacing it.

Clean out the interior. Months of saltyand snowy boots have no doubt taken a tollon the carpeting. It's a good time to vacuumand perhaps even shampoo the carpeting. While you're at it, clean out the empty coffeecups and fast food bags.

Other things to consider are the air filter, the oil and oil filter, and the radiator andcooling system. Spring is a time to get reac-quainted with the great outdoors-just makesure your vehicle is ready to spring into bet-ter weather.

Put the spring in your vehicle

By Tresa EricksonWhether you’re selling or maintaining

your car, a good detail job can go a longway in keeping it looking its best. You canundertake the thorough cleaning yourself oryou can take advantage of the servicesoffered at thousands of auto detailers nation-wide. Whatever route you take, you canexpect the following areas to be covered.

ExteriorA car’s exterior can take a real beatingover the years. Most exterior detail jobsinvolve the cleaning, polishing and protect-ing of many facets of a car’s exterior, includ-ing the paint, chrome trim, windows, wheelsand tires. There are several techniques andproducts available to do this from acids anddegreasers to waxes and polishes.

InteriorLike the exterior, a car’s interior can take

a real beating over time, especially in house-holds with kids or areas with harsh weather.

Interior detail jobs include an extensivecleaning of the dash, panels, windows, upholstery and carpet. Depending upon theservice you select, the seats may be removedfrom the car to ensure a good cleaning.Again, a variety of techniques and productsmay be used, including steam cleaning.

EngineNo auto detail would be complete with-

out the pop of the hood and an enginecleaning. Steam and degreasers can dowonders to improve the look of an engine.

While body panels may be sanded toeliminate scratches, most detail work does notinclude major bodywork or repair.Depending upon where you go, variousdetail services may be available and pricesmay vary according to the size of vehicle youhave. Detailers may offer everything from acomplete detail package to an exterior washand wax. No matter how much or how littleyou have done, your car will look better andyou will feel better driving or selling it.

B Y MELINDAM YERSGet a jump on the growing season by

starting your favorite or hard to find plantsindoors from seeds. Starting hard to findplants, like many of the heirloom or newlyintroduced varieties, from seed may be theonly way you will be able to add these toyour garden. Plus, you’ll be extending thegrowing season and bringing the fun ofgardening indoors.

All you need is a little space, a few sup-plies and of course seeds to get started.Check the back of your seed packets forplanting directions. Most recommend whenand how to start seeds indoors as well asany other special care the seedlings willneed.

Purchase, recycle or make your owncontainers from newspaper. Sanitize usedpots by dipping them in a one part bleachand nine parts water solution and then rins-ing them with clean water.

Fill the containers with a sterile well-drained potting mix or seed starting mix.

Once the containers are filled, plant theseeds according to the seed packet direc-tions.

For most seeds, plant them twice theirdiameter deep and gently water. Continueto water often enough to keep the soilslightly moist. Extend the time betweenwatering and increase your seed startingsuccess by covering the container withplastic. Or purchase a seed starting kit, likethe self-watering Growease seed starterkits.

Move your containers to a sunny win-dow as soon as the seedlings emerge fromthe soil. Turn plants often to encourageeven growth. Or increase your success bygrowing seedlings under artificial lights. You can make your own light system or pur-chase tabletop, shelf units or easy toassemble light systems, like Stack-N-Grow(gardeners.com). Keep the lights four to sixinches above the top of the seedlings forbest results. As the seedlings grow, be sureto maintain this distance by simply raising

the lights or lowering the containers.Move overcrowded seedlings to larger

containers once they have two sets of trueleaves. The first leaves that appear arerather indistinct and are called seedleaves. The next set of leaves look morelike the mature plant’s leaves and arecalled true leaves. Once the next set of trueleaves forms, it is time to transplant over-crowded seedlings.

Use a fork or spoon to carefully lift outthe seedling. Clusters of seedlings can bedug and carefully teased apart beforeplanting in individual pots. Be careful not topinch and damage the young tender stems.

Place seedlings in their own clean con-tainer filled with moist sterile potting mix.Plant the young plants at the same depththey were growing in the original contain-er.

Thin seedlings started in individual con-tainers as needed. If you planted severalseeds in each small container remove allbut the healthiest one. Prune the weaker

seedlings to ground level, so theseedling can develop into a strplant for the garden.

Continue to grow your plantwindow or under artificial lightthoroughly and often enough tsoil slightly moist.

Soon it will be time to mhomegrown transplants into the
