King's paternal grandfather,James Albert King, had been asharecropper near the small townof Stockbridge, Georgia, outsideAtlanta. Like most sharecroppers, he

had worked hard and earned little.King, Sr. was the second of ten

children. He had left Stockbridgefor Atlanta at the age of sixteen, with nothing but a sixth-grade ed-ucation and a pair of shoes. In Atlanta he worked odd jobs

and studied, and slowly developeda reputation as a preacher. Whilepreaching at two small churches

outside of Atlanta, he met AlbertaChristine Williams, his future wife, and King, Jr.'s mother. She was a graduate of Atlanta's

Spelman College, had attendedthe Hampton Institute in Virginia, and had returned to Atlanta toteach. Her father, the Reverend Adam

Daniel Williams, presided over At-lanta's well-established EbenezerBaptist Church. When King, Sr. and Williams

married, they moved into theWilliams home on Auburn Avenue, the main street of Atlanta's AfricanAmerican business district. After some time had passed,

her father asked King, Sr. to serveas assistant pastor at Ebenezer, which he did. When the seniorpastor died of a heart attack in1931, King, Sr. took over his du-ties.King, Jr. and his siblings were

born into a financially secure mid-dle-class family, and thus they re-ceived better educations than theaverage child of their race; King's

recognition of this undoubtedly influenced himin his decision to live a life of social protest, ex-tending the opportunities he had enjoyed to allblacks. In his father, King had a model of courage:

King, Sr. was involved in the local chapter ofthe National Association for the Advancementof Colored People, or NAACP, and had led asuccessful campaign to equalize the salariesof white and black teachers in Atlanta. As a child, King's encounters with racial dis-

crimination were mild but formative. The first significant one came when he

began school. White playmates of his were toattend a different elementary school from his, and, once the year began, their parents nolonger allowed King to come over and play. It was this instance of injustice that first led

his mother to explain to him the history of slav-ery and segregation. When King was in high school, he attended

an oratory contest in Valdosta, Georgia, wherehe took second prize. His victory was soured, however, by the long

bus ride back to Atlanta: the bus was segre-gated, and the black people had to stand sothat the white people could sit. Thus King grew up in a family that encour-

aged him to notice and respond to injustices.Later in life, his father and mother would al-ways continue to support King's choices,

though they were forced at times to witness thetragic consequences of those choices, includ-ing their son's premature death.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s fourchildren didn't see their fathermuch. While friends say he an-guished over not being astronger presence for his sonsand daughters, King also be-lieved that, as the moral leaderof the civil rights movement, hehad no choice but to make thatsacrifice.

Still, Yolanda, Martin, Dexter and Ber-nice loved their father and his exuber-ance, which they saw in his practicaljokes, his willingness to roll around onthe floor with them, and the delight hetook in playing what they called "the re-frigerator game," where he would havethe children jump into his arms from thetop of the refrigerator.None of them fullycomprehended what was happeningaround them. Like most families in the Vine City

neighborhood of Atlanta, they had littlemoney, and yet their father was alwayson television. Famous people like JackieRobinson dropped by the house. When their father won the Nobel

Peace Prize in 1964, Yolanda, the old-est, was just 9 years old, while her sib-lings were 7, 3 and almost 2; none ofthe children were quite sure what thisaward was.On April 4, 1968, some of the children

were watching television when their

show was interrupted by a news flash:Their father had been shot in Memphis.More than an hour passed before wordreached their home that he had died.Shortly after her husband's assassina-

tion, Coretta decided to create a fittingmemorial, an institution designed to per-petuate his legacy by addressing socialissues. She called it the Martin Luther King,

Jr. Memorial Center, and for more than adecade she ran it out of her basement. She raised money from wealthy philan-thropists and helped assemble a boardof prominent leaders, who soonchanged the name of the Atlanta institu-tion to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Centerfor Nonviolent Social Change, betterknown as simply the King Center.Kingleft his family almost no money, but hedid bequeath them one invaluable asset:his words. He had copyrighted his writings and

his speeches—including his most fa-mous, the "I Have a Dream" speech de-livered in 1963 from the steps ofWashington, D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial to250,000 people. If anyone ever wanted to publish his

writings or broadcast his speeches, theywould have to pay the family for therights. The children were all able to go to col-

lege, thanks to the fund set up by long-time King friend and confidante HarryBelafonte.Yolanda attended Smith College,

while Bernice went to Grinnell Collegebefore graduating from Spelman, a his-torically black college in Atlanta. The boys attended the alma mater of

their father and grandfather, MorehouseCollege, a school exclusively for blackmen.
