Animal Control Class - By- JP Devona & John Dunkovich

On Saturday May 26, 2018 from 9 to noon, 49 DuPage CERT members and 7 guests from Round Lake Beach CERT and Disaster Dogs Search Rescue met up for two supplementary training classes on response to CERT issues involving animals in our communities. Pets rely on us for their care every day, and we rely on them for comfort and companionship. Animals can't plan for themselves, so the best way to protect your furry, scaly, or slimy family member is to plan ahead! Dr. Barbara Hanek, Veterinarian and Administrator of DuPage County Animal Services, covered topics of emer-gency planning for pets, information about animal behavior and body language needed when responding as CERT members to disasters, and knowledge and skills needed when dealing with special categories of critters living among us: household pets, service animals, livestock, wildlife and exotic animals. Animals in DuPage County will directly benefit from this event: not only did we all learn a great deal, but attendees generously donated an SUV-full of supplies to Dr. Hanek from the DuPage Animal Shelter's wish-list. I took everything over directly to the shelter after the class, and volunteers there were extremely grateful for the treats, food, paper products, bed bedding and other materials needed for care and adoption of lost and displaced animals in our area. Two Bostons Pet Store and members of the Milton Township Leadership Team contributed door prizes for the event. Leftover coffee and donuts were donated to the DuPage County Sheriff's office. Thanks to all for giving your time, talent and treasure toward improving our animal response training, and for giv-ing back to our community by supporting the work of DuPage Animal Services!

CPR Class— By Dottie Hemrick

If you did not attend our Milton Township CERT CPR class on May 5, you missed a lot. We were scheduled for a full class of 25 students, and 23 were able to attend at the Lisle Fire Department. Yes, it started at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning, and, yes, parking was a problem for those unfamiliar with the area. But it was well worth it. Mike Egan, our perennial instructor, was informative and interesting as always. Mike also teaches CPR classes at other locations which charges up to $99 for the same class. So at $20, ours is a real bargain. Mike teaches in a way that makes CPR intuitive. He teaches you so you will remember the information, even though a lot is covered in over 3 hours. Mike also patiently answers all questions during that time. We learned many ways to save lives. We learned the Heimlich maneuver for infants, children and adults. He goes over many scenarios and we learn by doing. Mike has many "war stories" which leave a memorable impression on his students. We also learned CPR for in-fants, children and adults. You never know when this practice could be used to save a life. Even though the American Heart Association CPR certification is good for two years, Mike recommends repeating a CPR class every year. It is easier to remember what to do if it is reinforced over and over again. Especially if you are not using that information in the meantime. So for those 23 students who are certified, thank you for being willing to save a life! For the rest of our CERT graduates, we know you are also willing to save lives. That is one of the reasons you signed up for the Milton Township CERT classes. Please consider joining our next CPR class , it will be Saturday, October 27, at 8 a.m. at the Lisle Fire Depart-ment. The cost will be $20. Please mark your calendar and make plans to join us!" Dottie Hemrick

Glendale Heights Fest - By– IC Team—Joan Harenberg, Michael Lynch, Tim Klienow, Trish Kuechler, Hannah Detloff, Souna Naqvi and Jack Ingham.

We had a great event this year where many dedicated CERT Members helped with this 5 day event from July 11th through July 15th, 2018. We were able to secure the fire line with the many volunteers we had on Wednesday and Sunday. We promoted our Organization and got 22 applicants signed up and many others interested in joining. We also help with Flagging this year. A Special THANK YOU to all who helped!

Dupage County Fair - By Marty Keller -Executive Director

Our CERT team had a great experience at this year’s fair. Thirty-three different members put in time being extra “eyes and ears” to keep the event safe for everyone. Plus, three times we aided in the search and location of missing children! Taking into account the expanded grounds, searching required all available hands. The fair served as an excellent opportunity for newer members to spend time with more seasoned partners and get to know our leaders better. We got in lots of radio work as well as practicing some first aid skills. Funnel cake tasting was an added treat. My personal thanks to all who helped out. Overall it was a valuable five-day event and we look forward to 2019.

Brew Fest—2018 By David Sezsonov

Thank you to the 16 Cert volunteers that made Wheaton’s 8th annual brew fest a safe and successful day. With the temperature in the 90s and a record crowd of almost 3000 people Cert once again successfully maintained a safe, fun environment where everyone could enjoy the day. No matter what popped up Cert was always there to lend a helping hand throughout the day. Great job team!

Tools of the Trade Paul Mueller, J. – Baker 06

Today’s article does not deal with a tool or gadget that you can hold in your hand, but is real none-the-less. It is a state of mind that propels us forward today, toward a better tomorrow. There is a wise Chinese proverb that states, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now”. Very wise indeed. We cannot change what we have done in the past, but we can shape our futures with action now. How does this relate to CERT and general preparedness for life’s uncertainties? In a very direct way. Ask yourself, what can I do today to be in a better prepared position tomorrow? Then do it. Some of the questions to ask yourself relate directly to CERT preparedness, including the following: When was the last time I checked my CERT gear for completeness? Did I borrow something from the kit and forget to put it back? When did I last check and replace the batteries in my flashlight (s), communications equipment or smoke and CO detectors, for that matter? When did I last check my fire extinguishers and first aid kits for expiration dates? When did I last search out training in preparedness-related topics, such as first aid or CPR? When did I last participate with the CERT team on a call out or exercise? When did I last check the readiness and safety supplies in my home, car or boat? When did I last speak with family members, especially children, regarding emergency preparedness and plans? When was the last time I updated the emergency plan to ensure accuracy and current living circum-stances? If the answer to any of these questions is “over a year ago” or worse yet, “I don’t know” you may not be as prepared as you think you are. Maybe the best answer to any of these questions is, NOW!
