Faculty members from Philosophy, Art, History, and the Library are working together with their students on
different interpretations of the rare mass-market edition of Diderot’s and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaireraisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (1771-1781). This
valuable and prestigious resource is available in Milne Library’s Alden Room, home of the
College’s Special Collections – truly, a “secret garden” of rare and wonderful archival
documents and other special collections. The display highlights both these efforts and the Encyclopédie’scontent, as it invites viewers, in eighteenth-century
fashion, to discuss over a cup of coffee.
