Shrek—Believe All Ogre Again

William Steig (1907-2003), the artist once crowned the “King of Car-toons” by Newsweek, remains the

New Yorker’s longest-running contributor with more than 1,600 drawings and 117 cov-ers to his name. He began writing and illus-trating books for children at the age of sixty.

In the 1990 picture book Shrek!, Steig took familiar themes and characters from traditional fairy tales and wove them into a fabric of cut-ting wit and humor to create a modern-day fairy tale for kids and adults alike. From the indomitable Pi-nocchio to the lovable ogre himself, Shrek! allows each character to em-body a sense of optimism and vigor that, while absent from classic fairy tales, fits nicely into the mind set of a new and in-volved generation. Whereas the classic fairy tale ogre is threatening, Shrek is kind, strong and wise.

DreamWorks Pictures brought Steig’s modern fairy tale to the screen in 2001. Ear-ly in the film’s production process, Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes felt that the story was a perfect fit for Broadway, and he and DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg determined that the first step was to see how the characters came to life on screen.

The movie version of Shrek had its own fairy tale ending, going on to become one of the most successful film series of all time, even winning the first-ever Academy Award for an Animated Feature film. Having con-qured Hollywood, it was time for Shrek and his merry cohorts to take Broadway by storm. DreamWorks assembled some of the most celebrated, talented and slightly twisted creative types working on Broadway, with David Lindsay-Abaire (Book and Lyr-ics), Jeanine Tesori (Music), Jason Moore

and Rob Ashford (Co-Directors) at the helm. They also turned to the top notch designer Tim Hatley for sets and costumes.

Shrek The Musical debuted in the sum-mer of 2008 at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre and opened on Broadway in December of that year. During its Broadway run it played over 500 performances, garnered eight Tony Award nominations, ranked in the top ten

musicals for ticket sales in 2009, and embarked on a national tour.

In May of this year, the show opened a production based in

London, England.The musical’s

latest tour, com-ing to the Fisher Theatre in Feb-ruary, incorpo-rates some crit-ically-acclaimed a d j u s t m e n t s including a new opening, new musical arrange-ments, and a new song, “For-ever,” sung by the red Dragon.

During its run in Costa Mesa, California in October, Shrek The Musical made Mi-cheal L. Quintos of Broadway World laugh for most of the night. In his review, he said “this amusing, big-kid friendly live-action cartoon musical delivers the laughs not with a beguiling snark but, rather with fart battles, cheeky sight gags and a sassy attitude,” add-ing that it’s “a silly, harmlessly fun show.”

The new production’s talented cast and hi-larious pop culture and Broadway referenc-es—look for jabs at everything from Wicked and A Chorus Line to Dreamgirls and Les Misérables—will undoubtably bring tons of good-humored fun to the Fisher Theatre stage in February and March 2012.

A Tuesday night shortly before Christmas 1956. Four legends—Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley—gathered at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where they’d launched their careers. Word soon leaked out of an impromptu jam session. A newspaper man who was there wrote, “This quartet could sell a million.” Soon, they were dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet. This was their only performance, a cul-tural flashpoint that caught rock ‘n’ roll at the moment of creation. Sun Records owner Sam Phillips discovered and produced the Million Dollar Quartet. That’s why he, together with Presley and Lewis, were among the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s charter inductees. Perkins and Cash soon joined them. Unlike other producers at that time, Phillips took an active role in recording, encouraging and coaxing his young, untested artists to reach deep within themselves. He began by recording blues singers like B.B. King and Ike Turner. Later on, he was the first to sign Roy Orbison and Charlie Rich. In his rudimentary, one-room studio, Phillips looked for innovation, not imitation. The music he recorded transformed the cultural landscape of the twentieth century, and its reverberations are still felt today.

Ushering in 50 years of memorieseeting Floyd and Chrissie McDaniel, Larry and Coleen Miller, and Don Shannon together, one can’t help

but get swept away by a prideful nostalgia for the Fisher Theatre and Broadway. Their enthusiasm is contagious. Broadway In De-troit met up with these former Fisher Theatre staff members ear-lier this season to discuss the theatre’s fiftieth Anniversa-ry. All of them were here for the Fisher’s initial seasons and have built stories, connections, and friendships while doing everything from selling tick-ets to chauffeuring Broadway stars.

Floyd McDan-iel was one of the last people to step inside of the Fisher when it was a Ma-yan-themed movie palace. He was also one of the first ush-ers to work at the renovated theatre with the opening of The Gay Life in 1961. Floyd came back to usher at the Fisher many times throughout the years. At one point he was known as “Chief Usher in the Balcony.”

It wasn’t long after the theatre reopened that Floyd’s sister Coleen started working with the Confection Cabinet Corporation at the Mezzanine candy counter. Her first show was Advise and Consent in December 1961. The following season she brought her sister Chrissie on-board with the opening of Oliver! Chrissie continued to work the Fisher Theatre candy counter for twenty-nine and a half years until 1991.

While her sister stayed with concessions, Coleen spent many years working through-out the Nederlander/Fisher Theatre organi-zation. Like many people in the Fisher The-atre family, she found a home and a place wherever it was needed, even at other venues

like Pine Knob and The Birmingham The-atre, both once managed by the Nederlanders.

In the summer of 1962, Larry Miller began working as an usher. Just out of high school, as most of the staff were, Larry offered to walk Coleen and Chrissie home one night. Shortly after, Larry and Coleen began dat-

ing and were mar-ried, one of many Fisher Theatre ro-mances throughout the years. Larry also spent time in various capaci-ties throughout the organization, ush-ering, selling con-cessions, and even working for a time as Johnny Mathis’s body guard while the star was per-forming at the Fisher.

Starting with the subscription depart-ment in 1962, Don Shannon also had the opportunity to meet the stars of the shows. He even spent time work-ing as the personal driver for the found-er of the Nederland-er Theatre Corpora-

tion, D.T. Nederlander. “D.T. commanded a presence,” stated Don, “he was larger than life.” In addition to driving the Nederlanders, Don also was called upon to drive perform-ers like Zero Mostel and others.

For decades these five have remained friends. They all recounted memories of great people who have worked at the Fish-er—people such as Kenny the elevator at-tendant and Hy Hyman who would sell souvenir programs. Together, they share a common bond with the Fisher Theatre and the magical live performances, performers, subscribers, and people that have made this building a Detroit landmark and treasure for fifty years. It’s a tradition that continues to-day with new ushers, doormen and women, performers, patrons and subscribers.

Chuck first craft-ed the music arrangements for MDQ during the original Daytona and Seattle workshop productions, supervised the musical perfor-mances for its 2008 Chicago opening, and created new music material for the show’s Broadway and West End productions.
