Promotion and Assessment Requirements

the Pupil Progression Plan (PPP) specifies the requirements for promotion to the next grade level and for graduation. the sunshine state standards are benchmarks for what students should know and be able to do in each subject at each grade level. they are required as the curriculum in every public school in the state. there are 24 specific credits required to earn a diploma from an okaloosa high school.

students receive report cards every 9 weeks. subject area grades are based on academic achievement on the sunshine state standards. end of Course (eoC) exams are also taken by middle and high school students at the conclusion of the course.

the FCat (Florida Comprehensive achievement test) is given to students in grades 3-10 and includes a test of reading and mathematics. a separate writing test is given in grades 4, 8, and 10 and a science test is given in grades 5, 8, and 11. in order to graduate students must pass the reading and math tests. exceptional education students (ese) seeking a standard diploma are expected to participate in the FCat assessments. results from the FCat are generally not available until the final days of school each year or in the summer. Services that may be available to Okaloosa students and families

Mentoring – Mentors are critical in motivating students. Mentors are matched with students at all academic levels and many mentors are needed. Mentoring takes place on the school campus one day a week for about 30 minutes at a time that is convenient for both the student and the mentor. Contact the Office of Community Affairs at 833-7614.

After-school programs – Many schools offer after-care programs in their facilities that may also include tutoring and organized homework sessions. Contact your school for more information.

Academic Advisement – school guidance counselors work closely with teachers, administrators and parents. services are provided in four content areas: academic achievement, career development, personal/social development, and community involvement. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s counselor for additional information specific to the school.

Progress Monitoring Plans (PMP) – if a student is not proficient in grade level curriculum and requires academic support, a plan of remediation will be developed in collaboration with the parent. the PMP will remain in place until the student consistently demonstrates grade level performance.

Specialized Academic Opportunities for Students

okaloosa schools offer a variety of academic programs beyond the regular education classes for students. these programs include:

• Gifted courses: Students must qualify through a testing and qualification process

• Advanced Placement®: College level courses taught by high school teachers

• International Baccalaureate (IB): Internationally recognized course of study

Exceptional Student Education (ESE)

the okaloosa County school district offers a continuum of services through the exceptional student education (ese) program to assist students with special needs, including gifted students. iePs and ePs are developed by a team of individuals which includes the parent, teachers and other district staff. there are a myriad of classroom and testing accommodations that can be implemented for eligible ese students. some eligible ese students are instructed using a modified curriculum based on special standards and will graduate with a special diploma. the Florida department of education offers a parental choice program for ese students through John M. located about a mile east of state road 285 on U.s. Hwy 90, Blackstone is less than a 20 minute drive from Niceville, deFuniak springs and Crest-view. destin is only 30 minutes away. designed

by Bill amick, Blackstone Golf Course has wide fairways and a playable rough. You don’t have to be a long hitter to shoot a low score. Bob Bonezzi, a local restaurateur and president of Bonezzi development, is the driving force behind the new course and has done everything he can to make the course affordable and playable. Green fees are $39 and include a cart. Military, retired military and anyone over the age of 65 can play for $34, and for $25 you can play 9 holes from 1 p.m. – twilight, Monday – Friday.

in addition to the 18-hole golf course, Blackstone offers a 4,000 square foot clubhouse, a pro shop and bar & grill that will cater to the hungry and thirsty golfer.

A favorite destination for canoeists and kayak-ers, Blackwater river offers opportunities for a variety of outdoor recreation. the river is one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the nation, making this park a popular place for

swimming, fishing, camping, and paddling. shaded campsites are just a short walk from the river, and visitors can enjoy a picnic at a pavilion overlook-ing the river. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy strolling along trails through undisturbed natural communi-ties. in 1980 the park was certified as a registered state Natural Feature for possessing exceptional value in illustrating the natural history of Florida. atlantic white cedars line the river and one of them was recognized in 1982 as a Florida Champion tree, one of the largest and oldest of its species. located 15 miles northeast of Milton, off U.s. 90.

Pristine white sugar sand beaches and more than 6,000 feet of natural scenic shoreline border the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Natural features of the park include sand pines, scrub oaks, and dune rosemary. Boardwalks provide access to the beach for

swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. two large pavilions al-low for picnicking and grilling. a playground is the first stop on our nature trail and is sure to be a success with the kids. the nature trail provides visitors a rare glimpse of the coastal dune ecosystem and abundant wildlife and is pet friendly. Camping at Henderson Beach state Park provides 60 camp-sites that are located in our secondary dune system. the sites include water and electric hookups and access to air con-ditioned and heated bathhouse facilities. a separate beach access boardwalk with outdoor showers and a playground are included in our campground. Henderson Beach is a.d.a accessible and includes beach wheel chair availability. visi-tors can enjoy truly breathtaking sunsets while relaxing by the warm crystal clear water of the Gulf of Mexico. the park is located just east of destin on U.s. 98.

rocky Bayou, the main feature of the park, is the trailing arm of Choctawhatchee Bay and is popular for boating and fishing. a double-lane boat ramp makes this one of the best boat launching locations on the bay, where both freshwa-ter and saltwater fish are found. other opportunities for fun include hiking, bicycling, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. Puddin Head lake, at the center of the park, is a great spot for freshwater fishing and canoeing. a well shaded campground is available for full facility camping.
