Military Consumer Protec-tion Office Takes Shape

MOAA attended a discussion group regarding the creation of the new Office of Service Member Affairs within the Consumer Financial Protec-tion Bureau created by recent financial reform legislation. Meet MOAA's Newest Lob-byist We'd like to introduce you to Kelly Cotton, MOAA's new Deputy Director of Govern-ment Relations (spouse and family issues).

Military Consumer Protec-

tion Office Takes Shape

MOAA was invited by the Treasury Department this week to join a small group of military service organizations, service legal and relief socie-ties' representatives, Penta-gon officials, and consumer advocate groups to discuss the creation of the new Office of Service Member Affairs within the Consumer Finan-cial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

The creation of both the CFPB and the Office of Ser-vice Member Affairs came about as a result of the recent passage of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Finan-cial Protection Act.

Holly Petraeus, spouse of Gen. David Petraeus and a Senior Program Consultant for Better Business Bureau Military Line - a program of the Council of Better Busi-ness Bureaus providing con-sumer education and advo-cacy for service members and their families - also partici-

pated in the discussion.

MOAA Government Relations Deputy Director Phil Odom, USAF (Ret.) urged that the new office create a routine forum with groups such as those in attendance that could provide insight on the latest financial scams and practices that are negatively affecting military members and their families.

"This office must be quick to

respond if and when our mili-

tary personnel and their fami-

lies fall prey to unscrupulous

financial practices," he said.

Relations (spouse and family

issues).

Kelly is the spouse of an active duty Marine captain and a mother of two. Before joining our team she served as the Family Readiness Officer for the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune, NC. She recently moved to the area when her husband was assigned to Marine Corps Base Quantico.

We're really excited to gain Kelly's installation-level experi-ence in supporting families who are bearing the brunt of national wartime sacrifice, and she fully shares MOAA's pas-sion for making sure our coun-try does the right thing by them. Her experiences will prove invaluable in pushing our
