Dear Parents and Community
Week 4 already, where does the time go? It has definitely started to heat up this week which has seen the return of the flies and bobtails. Good luck to all our farmers starting harvest, I hope you all have a smooth run. WELCOME The Miling PS staff and students would like to extend a very warm welcome to Tiara and Destiny. We are all very excited to have two new friends join our school and have all tried very hard to help them both settle in. We hope you both love Miling as much as we do. We now currently have 37 students enrolled at the school which we are beyond excited about. According to our resident guru, Mrs Jones, the last time we had numbers like this was back in 2002. It is fantastic to see our school thriving!
T20 CRICKET CUP Congratulations to our Year 3-6 students who attended the Milo T20 Blast Cup in Moora on Friday 20 October. Our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams both won their division, being undefeated throughout the day. Thank you to Mrs Dennis for organising this event, driving the bus and supervising the students. Thank you also to Wil for helping supervise on the day and to all of the wonderful parents and family members who came across to cheer on our students. Head to our website for a full write up and photos from the day.
ON-ENTRY Last week, Miss Huggins conducted the On-Entry Re-Assessment with students from Pre Primary to Year 2. Well done to all of the students who sat the test. Miss Huggins said every student tried their hardest and persevered until the end.
ATTENDANCE As you know, one of our 2015-2017 Business Plan targets is that ‘attendance rates remain high and above state means over the life of the plan’. Over the years, our attendance rates have remained high; however we are currently seeing a decline which is very concerning. Our overall attendance rate in 2014 was 96.2%, 97.4% in 2015 and 96.3% in 2016. Currently, our attendance rate for 2017 is only 92.0% which is not only low for Miling Primary School but is also presently sitting below the state average. A letter will be sent home to parents this week outlining our current attendance rates in more detail. Congratulations to our Year 6 students who are currently leading the attendance rate with 94.9%.
WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY Thank you very much for all your kind words and gifts last Friday for World Teachers’ Day. You all made us feel extra-special and we truly appreciate your support. It is fantastic to have such a positive relationship with you all.

FACEBOOK PAGE Some of you may have already seen or liked our Miling Primary School Facebook page. In Term 2, the School Board decided that a Facebook page could be a good tool to promote our school and all the wonderful things we do within it. The Facebook page will be used to complement our school website so please make sure you continue to check our website for more comprehensive updates, and if you haven’t already, please ‘like’ us on Facebook.
REMEMBRANCE DAY This year, because November 11 falls on a Saturday, students and staff will be observing a one minute silence on Friday 10 November to remember those who fought and died in wars. Staff will be complet-ing activities in class in the lead up to Remembrance Day to help students understand and remember the significance of the day.
ASSEMBLY Don’t forget that our assembly for this term is being held on Tuesday 7 November. Because this is our only assembly for the term, both classes will be presenting Bring and Brag. We hope to see you all there.
Kind Regards
ASHLYN SIVIOUR
PRINCIPAL PRIDE - EFFORT - PROGRESS
While students enjoy Game Factory sometimes the group meets a challenge that
requires serious perseverance and co-operation. ‘Seagulls’ continues to be one
of those challenges for the Senior Room, partially because of the temptation to
become distracted from the goal. Students are learning that they all have to be
engaged and co-operating to succeed. This last week, though still fun, required
patience and perseverance as we had many failed attempts. When we finally
completed the challenge everyone was relieved and excited. Unfortunately, we
found a few rules had been broken. This lead into a discussion of how completing
a challenge by changing the rules is really not completing that challenge at all.
When we do this we cheat ourselves.
In BUZ we began to discuss the benefits of co-operation as opposed to compet-
ing and having conflict. The game we played showed how competition can
bring out the worst in some of us but when we work together we can succeed.
I’m looking forward to continue our discussion of dealing with conflict next time. I
like the rest of BUZ but I believe its greatest strengths lie in what is to come.
At Miling PS, we believe that it is
‘cool to be clever’ Check out some of our student’s high quality work produced this fortnight!
In Science the year 5 and 6 students have been learning about the
Sun, Moon and Earth . As part of their lessons they made a model
to show the Moon, Sun and Earth in relation to each other.
I think they all did a great job!

JUNIOR CRICKET The juniors had their first game on Saturday with Moora. A great game was had by all with sportsmanship and giving it a go the priority of the day. The pads and whites were big on some but the great attitude that each player had was huge, well done boys. Thank you to all the Moora players for making the trip out for the game. If your child wants to have a go we will have Trainings for grades 2 and up on Fridays 5pm, we would love to see some more kids there. Remember cricket isn’t just a game for the boys, girls come on down and join in the fun We will aim to have a plan in place for the younger children in the coming weeks.
