PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE MATHS TALENT QUEST JUDGING
On Tuesday 16th August, twelve of our teachers went to Latrobe University to
take part in the State judging of the Maths Talent Quest competition. There were an enormous amount of entries from students including individual, small group and whole class projects ranging from Foundation through Year 10 levels. Milgate has yet again achieved exceptional results and they will be released very soon!
YEAR 3 STUDENT ACTION - SAVE THE CHILDREN
An inspiring group of students (Escha, Alysha, Courtney, Victoria, Tehya, Emily & Shakira) from 3AK have put their ideas into action this term holding a stall after school to raise money for the ‘Save The Children Foundation’. It has taken many months and lots of working hours from the students sourcing donations and making their creative concept come to life. They have donated many of their own toys and books and even have Kmart on board donating white t-shirts that the girls then paint & tie-dye. The stall is a great success and represents the students’ passion, commitment, open-mindedness and integrity. The stall is open every Monday after school at the canteen – please come along and support this wonderful initiative.
Yours sincerely, Debbie Mierisch | Principal Karlie Gooding | Assistant Principal

CIRCUS PERFORMANCE Roll up, roll up! On Wednesday night our Foundation and Year 1 students performed brilliantly in their Circus extravaganza held at the Besen Centre in Burwood. Students participated in many weeks of rehearsal with the Little Devils Circus group, practising their hula-hooping, ribbon swirling, poi swinging and superstar balancing!
The students absolutely loved every minute of it and are to be commended on their spectacular performance. Thank you also to the teachers for all their work and a special thanks to Sarah Brown who managed and coordinated the event.

SPORTING NEWS
District Athletics Training It has been a great start to District Aths Training with 50 students turning up to training on Tuesday and Friday mornings this week. Many thanks to the following people for their assistance: Danny Gamble, Anthony Phillips, Sonia Harding & Kim Peak. We have 2 weeks of training to go prior to District Aths on Wednesday 7
th September.
Let’s keep up the good work. Well done to all the students involved.
Junior Hooptime | Thu 11 Aug Selected Yr. 3 & 4 students represented Milgate PS at Hooptime Basketball Competition at Nunawading Basketball Stadium. The students all performed extremely well on the day and were a great credit to Milgate PS. The Boys & Girls All Star teams made it to the Grand Final. The boys played extremely well, but unfortunately went down by 6 points and the girls won their Grand Final by 1 point. The girls will now proceed to Regional Hooptime in Term 4. Good luck girls.
Regional Hockey 7’s | Fri 12 Aug Nine Yr. 5 & 6 students (Megan O, Kalan F, Tom T, Matt B, Emily H, Brianna H, George C-J, Callum M & Darren M) represented Milgate at the Eastern Region Hockey7’s Competition. The mixed team played 4 games and had 4 very close encounters. It is fantastic to hear that the students played to the best of their ability and showed terrific sportsmanship on and off the field. I would like to say many thanks to Steve O’Brien, who coached the team on the day and also ran a number of training sessions with the students prior to the competition.

METRO TRAINS COMPETITION Our Year 5 students recently competed in a competition to design a poster for Metro Trains. It needed to encourage young people to ride safely on trains and trams across Melbourne. Many young people entered and Kayley L's (5AP) poster was chosen as the third best one across the state. Her poster is on display at Richmond station and will be used at other train stations as well. Metro Trains visited the school and presented Kayley with her prize of $60 in movie tickets. Well done, Kayley!

Hi everyone,
On Friday the 2nd September we are having a disco at after school care to raise funds for
The Smith Family’s Back to School Appeal. The gym will be decorated, there will be music,
party food, games and prizes as well! Please bring along a $2 donation for this great
cause.
Did you know...
There are 638,000 Australian children whose families are experiencing financial hardship,
that these children begin school already behind their peers educationally and that
disadvantaged students are on average 2-3 years behind in reading and maths by the
time they are 15 years old.
To give all Australian students the opportunity to get the most out of their education The
Smith Family aim to raise funds to keep their after-school learning support programs
available. For more information go to www.thesmithfamily.com.au/back-to-school.
If your child would like to attend please book them in online at
www.campaustralia.com.au or call 1300 105 343.
New bookings are welcome! Please note that the $2 donation is in addition to the normal
after school care fees.
Melissa.
