Ki mua ki muri. Walk to the future facing the past. That’s been my touchstone the last few months while selecting this season of work for Silo Theatre’s 20th birthday year. It’s easy to find that milestone over-whelming and a little daunting, so I made a wish list:

To start the year back where it all began at The Basement Theatre with a show that is wild and full of new ideas.

To support new writing and theatre makers in our city that make us excited for the future.

To take one of our favourites on a nationwide tour.

To include a work that examines contemporary sexual politics, a topic we can’t seem to get enough of.

To bring back Mr. Bosher to direct one of the greatest plays ever written.

To make a new show for everyone aged five and up with artists we think are magic.

You

live

Silo stands where it does today because of the artists, audiences and supporters who have given so much of themselves over the last two decades. Thank you.

I’m really proud to be part of a company that for twenty years has cared so ferociously and believes so unwaveringly in the necessity of storytelling in our lives. A company that believes in the ability of great theatre to help us understand the world we live in, to say in a loud voice what we feel is unjust and to teach us how to be better to each other. I think those things matter now more than ever.

Feminism has fought big, brutal battles in history: for the right to work, the right to vote, and for our bodies to be our own. So now, as the dust settles, what might a new war cry look like?

Alice Birch’s Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. is a subversive, provocative and darkly comic manifesto that sees us return to our original stomping ground, with Virginia Frankovich making her directorial debut for the company.

Responding to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s provocation that “well-behaved women seldom make history”, this series of wrecking-ball vignettes shatters the invisible power of language in shaping the world around us. Exhilaratingly wild, fearless and playful, this is feminism at its messy edge.

Cellfish

A world premiere from T.O.A Productions Co-produced by Auckland Arts Festival

Shakespeare has power. Miss Lucy knows it. The themes in his work speak to her. Ambition. Jealousy. Deception. Disorder. She believes in the Bard’s stories, because they’ve helped her understand her own and she thinks they’ll help others find their way too.

When she brings her classes to a men’s correctional facility, unexpected talents are revealed and twisted fantasies surface. Directed by Jason Te Kare, Cellfish is a gripping black comedy that looks at what happens when you disturb the natural order of things.

Our sell-out 2015 smash hit returns to Auckland for a mid-winter Christmas special as part of a nationwide tour, beginning in the far north and ending in the deep south.

And we’re live! The oven’s caught fire, David is drinking and Peter has bad news. In the closet with the door wide open, Peter Hudson and David Halls were New Zealand’s original great gay love story – and two of our greatest entertainers. Prepare to be transported to a 1980s television studio for big laughs, rum-fuelled showdowns, and some very questionable cooking.

Co-created by theatrical daredevil Kip Chapman, Hudson & Halls Live! gives us a glimpse into the lives of two of New Zealand’s trailblazing personalities at a pivotal point in their career.

By Mike Bartlett

“A terrific comedy…Hypnotic and utterly contemporary.” The New York Times

Cock20 Jul — 12 Aug Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre

It’s the classic love story of our time: Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy feels confused. He misses his ex-boyfriend and is thinking of getting back with him. Maybe. He doesn’t know. He’s not sure. He still likes girl. He needs some time. Can he think about it?

Winner of the Laurence Olivier Award, Mike Bartlett’s wickedly playful take on modern love captures the exquisite pain and pleasure of sexual and emotional confusion – and the paralysing indecision that comes with having to choose.

Fresh from a season at Sydney’s Mardis Gras Festival, this critically acclaimed production from former Silo Artistic Director Shane Bosher makes its way to Auckland. Witty and bitingly sharp, Cock is theatre stripped back to its bare, dirty essentials.

Direction Shane Bosher Performance Matt Minto, Matilda Ridgway, Michael Whalley

The jewel in our 20th birthday crown, Shane Bosher returns to Silo with a contemporary take on Tennessee Williams’ devastating masterpiece.

A visitor has arrived in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Crippling debt has sunk the family estate, and a fragile and desperate Blanche DuBois seeks refuge with her sister Stella and her brooding husband Stanley. It’s a sultry, hot summer and the sexual tension and resentment is rising.

Seventy years after its Broadway premiere, A Streetcar Named Desire’s violent portrayal of femininity, masculinity and sexuality still feels urgent and powerful in its exploration of desire and domestic brutality.

By Sergei Prokofiev, adapted by Sophie Roberts and Leon Radojkovic

09 Nov — 09 Dec Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre

Peter’s not supposed to leave his grandfather’s house. There are wolves lurking in the forest, and it’s not safe. But Peter can’t stay inside forever and when he finally adventures out into the surrounding meadow, it’s not long before the wolf appears.

In this electric reimagining of Sergei Prokofiev’s beloved musical fairy tale, director Sophie Roberts and composer Leon Radojkovic bring together a glinting musical adaptation with a six-piece band, puppetry and live videography.

From David Bowie to Dame Edna Everage, Peter and the Wolf has seen an eclectic line-up of narrators throughout its celebrated history. In this original production, a rotating cast of Silo favourites and well-known personalities will narrate a performance each.

Travel deep into the woods, vanquish your fear, and don’t look behind you. A magical experience for anyone aged five and up.
