Riley Trails 16300 Riley Street Holland, MI 49424

Riley Trails is a 300 acre site consisting of rolling terrain, beech-maple forest, pine plantations and a 40 acre grass mound that was once an active landfill (currently closed to the public). Riley Trails features 7 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. Riley Trails has been owned by Ottawa County for many years but was designated for park use in 2006. A park master plan was approved in 2007 and park improvements including parking lot upgrades, trail improvements, picnic sites and toilet were added later that same year. In 2012 a portion of the declining red pine plantation was selectively logged to foster restoration of a sustainable healthy deciduous forest. In 2013 the trail system was re-organized and re-signed through the removal of redundant trails and confusing intersections. In addition, a 4.5 mile mountain bike course has also been added and marked, thanks to the help of local enthusiasts. A map can be found at the east end of the main parking lot. A 40 acre mound at the center of the site was once the Southwest Ottawa County Landfill. The landfill closed in 1979 and Ottawa County worked with the State of Michigan to address ground water contamination issues through a system of purge wells and a treatment facility that is still in operation. The capped landfill produces methane gas that is emitted through vent pipes. When methane gas emissions decline to safe levels, plans call for the top of the landfill to be opened to the public with trails, overlooks, and sledding hills.
