Public broadcasting is supported by a multitude of revenue streams. Federal and state grants, listeners and viewers as individual donors, and businesses of all sizes. WSIU, WUSI, WVSI, WSEC, WQEC & WMEC are no different. Each avenue provides vital funding for our stations to broadcast the quality programming you’ve come to expect. Our corporate support team works to find business sponsors who not only understand the mission of our stations but whose message will resonate with our listeners and viewers. Businesses support public broadcasting because they know the vital role it plays in our communities, enriching lives and providing content not found on any other media source.

Additionally, businesses serve as one of our most valued community partners, helping to fund and support activities across the region that foster community engagement, teacher professional development, and educational opportunities for children and families. The support shown back to businesses is reciprocal.

Our corporate support team consists of Brian Flath and Tracy Hauser in the southern Illinois region (WSIU, WUSI & WVSI), with Jeri Waldeck in the Springfield-area (WSEC, WMEC & WQEC). We thank our current underwriters for their ongoing support and look forward to introducing more businesses to the benefits of supporting public broadcasting. For more information contact Brian Flath ([email protected]) or visit wsiu.org.

NPR STUDENT PODCAST CHALLENGE

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTHWITH PBS AND WORLD CHANNEL

We’re inviting students from around the region to create a podcast and compete for a chance to win a grand prize and have their work appear on NPR!

Students are encouraged to put together a podcast with a class or extracurricular group and work with a faculty advisor or teacher to submit it to NPR. Submission rules and entry requirements can be found online at wsiunews.org and by searching ‘Student Podcast Challenge’ at nrg.org. The winning podcast submissions will be featured nationally in segments on Morning Edition or All Things Considered. Stand out entries may also air locally on WSIU Radio or appear on our website.

“We had several great submissions in 2019 from Carbondale Community High School, and would love to hear more,” says Jennifer Fuller, Associate Director of News & Public Affairs. “One of the best parts of working at WSIU is the interaction with young people - I enjoy learning from them, and would like nothing more than to highlight their work.”

WSIU FAMILY DAY - CLIFFORD & FRIENDS

24/7 PBS KIDS CHANNEL: EXPANDING ACCESS TO THE #1 CHILDREN’S EDUCATIONAL MEDIA

BRAND ON TV AND DIGITAL PLATFORMS

In partnership with Nonviolent Carbondale’s 11 Days of Peace, WSIU presents a free screening of the Independent Lens film Always in Season on Sun, Feb. 2 at 2:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library. Guests are invited to participate in a community conversation about the social impact of the film. The discussion will be led by Dr. Alfred Frankowski from the SIU Department of Philosophy. Written by Jacqueline Olive, Always In Season explores the lingering impact of lynching in America and connects this form of historic racial terrorism to racial violence today. The film follows the tragedy of African American teenager Lennon Lacy, who in August 2014, was found hanging from a swing set in Bladenboro, North Carolina. This film chronicles his mother’s quest for the truth and takes a closer look at the lingering impact of more than a century of lynching. The film was nominated for the 2019 Cinema Eye Honors-Spotlight and the ‘Best Writing’ award by the International Documentary Association. The production was also awarded the Special Jury Award for Moral Urgency at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival (U.S.). Learn more about the screening, access the episode trailer, and learn more about the filmmaker at wsiu.org/indielenspopup. Tune in for the television broadcast Mon, Feb. 24 at 9pm on WSIU TV or stream online at pbs.org beginning Feb. 25.

Exciting changes are in the works! We’re working on a few big projects this spring and one of them is the launch of the 24/7 PBS KIDS Channel! The free service will feature 24/7 educational programming and ensures that PBS KIDS’ high-quality content is available to all children and caregivers on a platform and at a time that works for them, including primetime, weekends, and other out-of-school times when children and families are most likely to tune in.

“The addition of the 24/7 PBS KIDS Channel builds on more than 50 years of WSIU tradition. Early childhood education has been a pillar at WSIU since our inception in 1958,” says Interim Executive Director Jak Tichenor. “It’s in our DNA and evidence of our commitment to life-long learning. The idea of making this type of resource available is very promising. We recognize learning does not just happen in pre-schools, child care facilities, and in classrooms – it’s a continuous process. We hope this additional channel offering provides yet other opportunity for our region’s children and families to learn and grow.”

Last fall, our engineers were hard at work preparing the necessary equipment upgrades needed to bring this valuable service into homes across the region. We anticipate the full service will launch in April 2020. Look for more details, including a hard launch date and the updated channel list, in future issues of Previews.

“As the only free national 24/7 kids’ TV service in the U.S., the PBS KIDS channel will be a game changer for all families,” says PBS President and CEO Paula A. Kerger. “Especially our nation’s most underserved, many of whom do not attend preschool and rely solely on over-the-air television for media content.”

The service will be available to over-the-air and select cable viewers, however it will not be available to Direct TV, DISH, or AT&T U-verse viewers. We are currently reaching out to cable providers to encourage them to carry the 24/7 PBS KIDS Channel. And, better yet, the channel is currently available as a live stream on pbskids.org and on the free PBS KIDS Video App for smart devices.
