MILAN 2015The Salone del Mobile 2015 - a combination of inspiration, ideas and insights from across the globe displayed in diverse locations from pop-up showrooms to a giant sprawling exhibition site.
Considered as the global benchmark for the home furnishing sector it has grown considerably, combining numerous smaller design events and locations within the city - covering everything from fashion, to automotive and of course interior design.
BEND-IT
A design detail which kept appearing was crush bending - resulting in a range of visual results. It’s a fine line between something looking damage, and it becoming a feature, but it was a repeated detail from a number of manufacturers.

Blue, blue, blue - this colour was everywhere, in various shades and marterials but it seemed round every corner there was a bit more.
SPACEYOURFRAMEFrames that act almost of three dimensional line drawings work great to highlight a space or define areas, and coupled with a bright bold colour these simple structure play with the our sense of space, defining fixed areas without forming a permanent barrier.

More like a fun house for food lovers than a supermarket, packed with exquisitely displayed product and delicious food this haven to the eadible combines the routine of food shopping with entertainment (cafes, restaurants, a stage for events), education (seminars and tasting rooms) and theatre (giant chocolate fountain, a delicatessan crammed with dried meats hanging from the ceiling).
HIGH-TECH
The name is a bit of misnomer, since the store has very little to do with tech of any sort.A sister to Cargo Milan, housed in a disused factory building this in the kind of store where you ‘find’ lots of things you never really wanted, but know you will always love.
ABCABC mannequins and Global Display have a close partnership and their Milan showroom bristled with a new concept featuring illustrations by the artist Lorenzo Petrantoni and new ranges (Juno) of elegant, stylish mannequins that grace some of the windows of the finest stores around the world.

Unlike the 1958 horror film these blobs are less scary - mostly, but show a clear trend for products where the outcome is almost uncontrollable, and no two products are the same.
CLINGFILMINGCreating dramatic installations doesn’t have to be expensive or incoporate high cost materials to produce impactful results. This webbed ceiling which spans the showroom space, and is highlighted with colour changing illumination uses simple shrink wrap to great effect,

Retailers are often seeking ways to minamlise the ‘structure’ of a display and allow the merchandise to stand out. This hanging solution incoporates magnets to all for a novel way to display clothing, with the ability to have support from underneath and on top. We can see this working in window displays and high end boutiques.

STRUCTURE
Vertical linear structures are great for two reasons, firstly they are light weight and provide screening and space definition without blocking sightlines. Secondly the vertical lines draws the eye upwards, which helps to accentuate height and therefore the overall ‘space’ available.
ILLUMINATION
NATURELIGHTSReminiscent or sea like bioluminescent creatures, these randomly placed orbs hang in disparate groupings and feature low levels of illumination. These installations are clearly inspired by nature where straight lines and visual conformity do not apply.
DISPLAYA simple yet impactful solution consisting of metal frames covered in laser cut metal
sheets that incoporate a hook element to allow for hanging. Combined with inner illumination these could be tailored for store interior or window displays.
Feature lighting is an effective way to enhance a space, whether for retail, enterntainment or leisure.
Throughout Milan there are numerous variations in lighting used, whether its
for artistic effect or simply to grab your attention - lighting does more than just
show the way.

LEXUS
Lexus have hosted events at Milan for 10 years and this year their theme was ‘Amazing in Motion’. A unique colaoration and a journery through the senses - apparently expressing the essence of Lexus today.
Created by space designer Philippe Nigro the mult-room installation took you on a journey through the sense (whilst showcasing their latest concept car of course).
Whether an LED light curtain imitating rain or a room full of mirrors expresses the luxury of the Lexus experience is open to debate - but an intriguing experience nonetheless.
INSPIRATION
3DPRINTINGThis process continues to evolve into almost an artform presented by the team at Xuburence. The complex forms and interweaved shapes, impossible to create by hand are printed in complete sections and stretch the boundaries of where 3D printing could go in the future.
The train for this wedding dress was printed in one complete run, with interlinked shapes that could not
have been created through any other process.
