For your convenience, these position notations are listed here. Each is tied to a code used in the body of the tables which comprisethe remainder of this book. The notes and codes listed below are also repeated throughout the book where applicable.

— American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specification ANSI/AASHTO/AWS D1.5-95 Bridge Welding Code includes “AASHTO/AWS Fracture Control Plan (FCP) for Nonredundant Members”. Under this specification,Heat and Lot testing is not required if the welding consumable is produced under a continuing quality assurance program which has been audited and approved by ABS, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, or ASME. Also, Diffusible Hydrogen Testing is not required as long as the Certificate of Conformance lists diffusible hydrogen testing results which meet the level required by the specification.

— American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) approvals are issued subject to the Bureau’s Rule requirement for Materials and Welding Part 2. Tests are conducted in the company’s plant, under supervision of an ABS surveyor to determine if electrodes conform to ABS grades or AWS specifications previously judged satisfactory by ABS for welding vessels. The Bureau publishes a list of approved electrodes giving their class and approved operating positions for each size. Sometimes, where there is no approved specification, approval may be given on the basis that each individual shipyard or contractor will qualify the procedure and elec-trode subject to Part 2, Section 3, paragraph 2/3C.3.2.c.

— American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has issued specifications covering construction of nuclear facilities. Each lot of welding consumables to be used must be individually tested to ASME SFA specifications.

— American Welding Society (AWS) specifications and classifications are established by the Society to provide standards for different types of electrodes throughout the industry. AWS does not test or approve any electrodes. The manufacturer certifies that their electrode conforms to a certain class. (See PCX.xx section for AWS classes for each electrode.)

— Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) approvals are based on tests witnessed by a CWB representative. Approvals listed in this booklet are for products manufactured in the USA. Products manufactured in Canada are approved separately. In general, CWB specifications are similar to AWS specifications. Copies of approvals are maintained in Cleveland and are available upon request.

— Department of Transportation (Bureau of Public Roads) requires that the contractor shall furnish a certified copy of a dated annual report of results of all pertinent required tests of AWS A5.1, A5.5, or other AWS specifications, as appropriate, made on electrode of the same class, size and brand and which was manufactured by the same process and with the same materials as the electrode being furnished for use on the project. Welding on main members shall be capable of producing weld metal having impact strength of at least 20 ft-lbs., Charpy V-notch at a temperature of 0°F or below. These Certificates of Conformance to Requirements are available on request.

— Lloyd’s Register (LR), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Germanischer Lloyd (GL), Bureau Veritas (BV), Controlas, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NKK) issue approvals for electrodes used worldwide in shipbuilding, offshore structures and pressure vessels. Products approved under the rules of these classification societies require annual requalification under the supervision of their surveyors.

— TÜV (TUV) is a German agency very similar to ASME. Projects manufactured under TUV rules must be welded with consumable approved by TUV. Initial approvals are obtained based on testing completed under TUV supervision. Approvals are maintained subject to Quality Assurance audits completed every two years.

— U.S. Coast Guard has formally adopted the American Bureau of Shipping list of approved electrodes.

— Deutche Bahn (DB) is the approval agency for German railroads. Approvals are based on tests specified by DB, and witnessed by an authorized third party.

(1) Specification QQ-E-450a was cancelled by the General Services Administration effective December 24, 1985. Per their instructions, future procurements should be made in accordance with AWS A5.1+.

NOTE: Electrodes are tested by an authorized testing laboratory under supervision of military personnel. When tests shown conformity with militaryspecification, approval is given and the electrode is placed on the government Qualified Products List (Q.P.L.) Periodic retesting is required under mostelectrode specifications. Certain specifications do not call for qualification and have no Q.P.L. Products supplied under military specifications mustundergo lot or batch tests with each order. Such items are noted under “Comments”. Revision suffixes are not included herein because they do notappear on the Q.P.L. and have no bearing on qualification of the product.

BR-41 REQUIRES THAT ALL ORDERS OR BIDS FOR GOVERNMENTAGENCIES MUST BE PROCESSED THROUGH THE FACTORY.

NOTE: Lot inspection is required with each order. The products marked with an (*) are listed on a Qualified Products List (QPL).

(1) MIL-E-18193B and MIL-F-18251C specs have been cancelled by the U.S. Navy. Future acquisitions should be to MIL-E-23765/4.
