    Beyond Remittances: Reframing Diaspora-Driven Development

    in El Salvador

El Salvador's lengthy civil war crushed diasporas' opportunities

for political or civic engagement in this small, densely-populated

Central American nation. However, hometown associations -

diaspora organizations that contribute to the development needs of their

members' hometowns - represent a modern-day venue for civil society

participation. This article explores how diasporas are contributing to development

in more ways than just cash flows and projects by transforming the governance

    landscape.

    Spotlight

Mexican Immigrants in the United States

Over the past five decades, Mexicans have constituted the single

largest group of immigrants to the United States originating fromLatin America. In 2011, 11.7 million Mexican immigrants resided

in the United States, representing 29 percent of the US immigrant

population and close to 4 percent of the overall US population. This article

examines the latest data on Mexican immigrants in the United States, including

population size, geographic distribution, admission categories, and demographic

    and socioeconomic characteristics.

    How Free is Free Movement?

    Dynamics and Drivers of

    Mobility within the European

    Union

issue, which runs through April, delves into a wide range of migration developments in

this dynamic and increasingly interconnected region.

Among the topics that you'll see covered over the coming weeks: the influence of the

Salvadoran diaspora at home; the health of Mexican immigrant women in the United

States; country profiles of Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and the United States; and

characteristics of Central American immigrants in the United States. We kick off the

series with a Spotlight onMexican Immigrants in the United Statesand an interesting

article that examines theSalvadoran diaspora's roles in development beyond

    remittances.

From World War II to the mid- to late-2000s, theMexican immigrant population in the

United Statesincreased - at times more than doubling in number from one decade to

the next. While the reasons behind the more recent southbound flows are complex,

some may be traced to thelarge numbers of US deportationsover the past few years,

coupled with voluntary return migration in response to Mexico's improving economic

fortunes and continuing weakness in the US labor market.

The migration relationships between Central America's Northern Triangle, Mexico, and

the United States are complex and fascinating - and are the subject of significant

research by the Migration Policy Institute'sRegional Migration Study Group. The Study

Group, co-chaired by former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, former US Commerce

Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, and former Guatemalan Vice President Eduardo Stein, this

spring will propose new collaborative approaches to migration, competitiveness, and

human-capital development for the United States, Central America, and Mexico.

    This report provides a

    detailed assessment of intra-

EU mobility at a time when

    the system itself is under

    pressure. It explores how

    movements have responded

to key changes such as EU

    enlargements, the end of

    restrictions on workers of

    new member states, and the

    economic crisis. The report

    also examines the

    motivations for migration

    (employment, family, study,

    and retirement), and

    discusses the impacts on

    labour markets, public

    services, and communities.
