Scenario

• You will be purchasing test creation software. You’ve done an online search and found a few possible candidates. You don’t really have a lot of time to do an exhaustive search. You need to do something soon.

• Your current software doesn’t support Windows 7 and/or the software developer is no longer in business, or something else blew up.

• You have a lot of content in the current system and you’re hoping you don’t have to re-enter it manually. You would like to automate the import process as much as possible.

• Now you need to figure out how you are going to get your content from the current system into a new testing system--whenever you get around to purchasing something.

What to do Next…

• Assuming you are still in the early stages of trying to select the best software to meet your testing requirements, we recommend preparing a testing requirements document. – Make sure to explain your current predicament to the software company.

Here are a few things you may want to add to your requirements list:

• Importing – Can you import your content from the old system?

– What format does your content need to be in?

– Can the software provide you with a sample of what the formatting looks like?

– Can they assist you in formatting your content or converting a sample for your review?

– Can they customize the import process to accommodate the formatting that you currently have?

– Will you be able to import your questions directly into the software’s question bank system?

– What import file formats does the software support?

• Media Banks – Does the software support creation and use of media banks?

– Can you import media into the media banks?

– Can you assign media to one or more questions across multiple tests?

Starting Out

• It's been our experience that some customers have a pretty fixed idea as to how they will conduct their testing based on the properties/behaviors used in the old software.

• Chances are, other than the basics, that the customer may have to modify their approach based on the new software.

• It’s always a good idea to set up an online demo session and provide the prospective vendor with a list of your requirements in advance of the demo.

• Even better would be a personalized online demo that is scheduled exclusively for you and any team members that you’d like to participate.
