WENDY HOSTERMAN RETIRING FROM DISTRICT
Oh, where do I begin. . . I’m sad that my friend Wendy is
retiring. Over the last couple years, I have gotten to know her,
and to know her is to love her. She is the sweet lady in the
office who smiles with her eyes, just like me. I don’t believe I
have ever seen her angry, and she always has a smile on her
face. So, with great reluctancy, I announce that Wendy
Hosterman is retiring from the Mifflinburg Area School District.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m very excited that she has reached this
milestone of being able to retire. I just don’t want her to leave.
Most recently and since 2008, Wendy Hosterman held
the position of Curriculum Secretary in the Administration
Office, but has put in many years here in the Mifflinburg Area
School District during the course of her career. Back in the
1980’s, Wendy worked in the Food Service Department in the
Middle School. She then left the District and went to work at
Ritz Craft for approximately ten years. She came back to the
District when she was hired to be a secretary in the Elementary
School in 1999 working for Leo Weidner. After about five years, Wendy ended up switching to an
office aide position within the Elementary School due to the long hours she worked on her family’s
farm milking cows. Thereafter, Wendy got her license to be able to drive school buses. She drove
school buses for the District for about two years in the mornings and afternoons and worked as a
learning support classroom aide with Beth Geyer in the Elementary School during the days. Then, in
2008, Wendy became the Curriculum Secretary working for Mr. Lichtel. She worked for a few people
who held that position and, most recently, Dr. Mattocks.
Wendy did not hesitate telling me that she will miss the people the most when she leaves.
She said that she treasures the friendships she has made and the opportunities she has had working
here which have allowed her to better her education, her knowledge of technology and to better
herself in general. She has always been appreciative of the opportunities to continue to learn
throughout her career. She treasures the time with the people she worked with. In particular,
Elementary School Secretary, Myrna Goss, became one of her great friends. She really missed
working with the kids of the Elementary School and the time that her and Myrna worked together.
In retirement, Wendy will enjoy the change of pace, helping her children and grandchildren,
and continuing to work on her crafts. Wendy is a talented artist and enjoys painting in her free time.
She is also looking forward to having a little extra time for herself in retirement.
Wendy hopes she is remembered as someone who would always lend a helping hand when
things needed to get done. She said she’s had a good track record and a good work ethic, and she’s
always tried to be helpful when and where help is needed.
When she wasn’t working, Wendy has been an active member of her church for almost 41
years. She and the members of her church have put together a community event called “Christmas
in the Park” which has been celebrated for the past twelve years. The yearly event is a chance for all
community members to put their differences aside and come together as one. You can really tell
how sincere Wendy feels about this event as she emphasized that she felt this in her heart and that

when everyone holds a candle and sings Silent Night, there is true peace. She hopes this event
continues to bring people and positivity together around the holidays.
During our interview, I learned a few new things that I didn’t know about Wendy. She grew up
in Vicksburg. When she was in the eighth grade, her family moved to Mifflinburg on Green Street.
She reminisced back to when she attended Mifflinburg High School and confided that those were
some of the best years of her life. She played on the softball team as a relief pitcher and a right
fielder. She was a majorette with the High School Band. She said they even went to the State
Championships and got to take the fire truck ride around town. And as humble as she is, she
insisted that she did not want me to mention that she was Homecoming Queen. But me being me,
how could I not? I told her to be proud that she was Homecoming Queen! I can’t say I’m surprised
though. Wendy is super sweet, very likable and still just as wonderful as I bet she was riding around
on her own float in the Homecoming Parade.
In her life, Wendy has chosen to spread kindness and helpfulness wherever she goes. Just
today, I was behind her in the drive-thru line, and when I got to the window to pay, the cashier
informed me that someone already took care of that for me. Thank you again for that Wendy! And
while I know our friendship will last beyond our time working together, I am truly sad that I won’t see
you and your smiling face and eyes in the office on a daily basis anymore. So, with that being said,
please join me in congratulating Mrs. Wendy Hosterman on her retirement! -JJ
