When using an electrical appliance, basic precautions should always be followed,including the following:

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFOREUSING THIS APPLIANCE

WARNING-To reduce the risk of fire, electricshock or injury:

Before usingCheck the voltage rating of thevacuum cleaner before connecting

the power cord to an electrical outlet.Your power source should correspondwith the voltage rating plate located onthe underside of the vacuum. Use onlyhousehold AC outlets. Never use DCpower sources. If you are not sure ofyour home’s voltage supply, consult aqualified electrician. Connecting thevacuum cleaner to a higher voltagethan indicated in these instructions mayresult in damage to the vacuum cleaneror injury.

To reduce the the risk of electricshock, this appliance has a

polarized plug (one blade is wider thanthe other.) This plug will only fit in apolarized outlet one way. If the plugdoes not fit fully in the outlet, reversethe plug. If it still does not fit, contact aqualified electrician to install the properoutlet. Do not alter the plug in any way.

A damaged vacuum cleaner canbe dangerous. Check the

packaging, the vacuum cleaner andaccessories for any signs of damage.Do not use a damaged appliance.

Do not use with a damaged cord orplug. If the appliance is not

working as it should, has beendropped, damaged, left outdoors orsubmerged in water, bring it to aservice center.

UseDo not use the vacuum on peopleor animals.

Do not use outdoors or on wetsurfaces. Only dry surfaces should

be vacuumed.

Only use the vacuum as describedin this manual. Use only Miele

recommended accessories.

The manufacturer cannot be heldresponsible for damage caused by

non-compliance with these "ImportantSafety Instructions". This appliance isintended strictly for household use only.

This vacuum should not be used toentrap or retain any hazardous

materials.

Do not allow the vacuum cleaner tobe used as a toy. Close attention is

necessary when used by or nearchildren.

Do not pull or carry by the cord,use the cord as a handle, close a

door on the cord, or pull the cordaround sharp edges or corners. Do notrun the appliance over the cord. Keepthe cord away from heated surfaces.

Do not unplug by pulling on thecord. To unplug, grasp the plug not

the cord.

Do not handle the plug or vacuumwith wet hands.

Keep hair, loose clothing, fingersand all parts of the body away from

openings and moving parts.

Turn off all controls beforeunplugging.

Use extra care when cleaning onstairs.

Floor attachments, accessoriesand wands must not be used at

head level to avoid injury to eyes andears.

Do not use to pick up flammable orcombustible liquids, such as

gasoline, or use in areas where theymay be present.

Do not use the vacuum cleaner topick up liquids, this could impair

the electrical safety of the vacuumcleaner. Wait for freshly shampooedcarpets to dry.

Do not pick up anything that isburning or smoking, such as

cigarettes, matches or hot ashes.

Do not vacuum up items which areheavy, hard or have sharp edges.

They could cause a blockage anddamage the appliance.

Do not vacuum toner dust. Toner,such as that used in printers and

photocopiers, can conduct electricity.

Always turn off the vacuum beforeconnecting or disconnecting the

Electrobrush, Turbobrush or anaccessory.

Do not use without dustbag andfilters in place. Do not turn on or

attempt to operate the vacuum cleanerunless the dustbag, dust compartmentfilter and exhaust filter are in place.Only use genuine Miele double-layerdustbags and filters (see "Maintenanceand care" for instructions on how toinsert the dustbag and filters). If adustbag has not been insertedproperly, the dust compartment coverwill not close. Do not use force!

Unwind the cable completely to aidthe vacuum in dissipating heat.

A temperature limiter automaticallyswitches off the vacuum cleaner if

it gets too hot (see "Frequently askedquestions.").

On the underside of the vacuumhandpiece is a metal insert

designed to absorb electrostaticcharge. Please make certain that yourhand remains around this metal insert.

Accessory useThe Miele Electrobrush is a motordriven accessory for use only with

Miele vacuum cleaners. It must not beused with vacuum cleaners producedby another manufacturer.

When vacuuming with the MieleElectrobrush or Turbobrush, do not

touch the rotating brush.

When using the vacuum with anElectrobrush and current-carrying

hose use caution. The hose containselectrical wires. Do not use if damaged,cut or punctured. Avoid picking upsharp objects.

The socket on the vacuum cleaner(depending on model) must only

be used with the Miele Electrobrushspecified for use with this appliance.

Only use attachments specified byMiele. Do not use the blower to

operate paint sprayers or similardevices that emit volatile or toxicvapors.

Monitor the dustbag changeindicator and inspect all filters

regularly. To ensure efficient suction,clean or replace them when necessaryaccording to the operating instructions.To guarantee safety, only use genuineMiele dustbags, filters and accessories.

Miele vacuum cleaner bags aredisposable and are only to be used

once. Do not attempt to reuse.

Do not use the vacuum without anaccessory attached. The rim could

be damaged and injuries could resultfrom sharp edges.

Maintenance and careA damaged power cord must onlybe replaced with a genuine Miele

cord by an authorized service agent.

Do not leave the vacuum pluggedin. Unplug from the outlet when not

in use and before servicing.

Do not put anything into openingsor use with any opening blocked.

Keep free of dust, lint, hair andanything that may reduce air flow.

The suction hose and thetelescopic wand contain electrical

wires. The plug connectors must notcome in contact with water. These itemsmay only be cleaned with a dry cloth,no moisture must touch them. Dangerof electric shock.

Clean only with a dry or slightlydamp cloth when disconnected

from the power supply. Never immersein water.

This appliance is equipped with apower cord reel. Hold plug when

rewinding onto cord reel. Do not allowplug to whip when rewinding.

Do not attempt any repairs otherthan those listed under "Vacuum

care." Other repairs should beperformed by an authorized serviceagent.The manufacturer can not be heldresponsible for any work performed byan unauthorized servicer.

DisposalBefore discarding an old vacuumcleaner, please cut off the power

cord and render the plug useless.Ensure the appliance presents nodanger to children while being storedfor disposal.

Afin de réduire le risque de chocélectrique, cet appareil est muni

d’une fiche polarisée (l’une desbroches est plus large que l’autre). Lafiche ne peut être insérée que d’un seulcôté. Si vous n’arrivez pas à l’insérerentièrement dans la prise, retournez-la.Si vous ne pouvez toujours pas l’insérermême après l’avoir retournée, faitesappel à un électricien qualifié pour faireinstaller une prise appropriée. Nemodifiez aucunement la fiche.

Un aspirateur endommagé peuts’avérer dangereux. Vérifiez bien

l’emballage, l’appareil lui-même et lesaccessoires pour constater desdommages éventuels. N’utilisez pas unappareil endommagé.

N’utilisez pas l’appareil avec uncordon d’alimentation ou une fiche

endommagée. Si l’appareil nefonctionne pas correctement, s’il a subiune chute ou un dommage, s’il a étélaissé à l’extérieur ou s’il a été immergé,faites-le vérifier dans un centre deservice technique.

UtilisationN’utilisez pas l’appareil pournettoyer des personnes ou des

animaux.

N’utilisez pas l’appareil à l’extérieurou pour nettoyer des surfaces

mouillées. Ne nettoyez que dessurfaces sèches.

Pour utiliser l’aspirateur, suivezuniquement les instructions

d’utilisation contenues dans le présentmanuel. N’utilisez que les accessoiresrecommandés par Miele.

Le fabricant décline touteresponsabilité quant à des

dommages causés par lanon-conformité aux présentesconsignes de sécurité. Cet appareil estdestiné uniquement à l’usagedomestique.

N’utilisez pas l’appareil pourcontenir ou circonscrire des

substances toxiques.

Ne laissez pas les enfants joueravec l’aspirateur. Si un enfant

l’utilise ou si vous l’utilisez dans unendroit où se trouvent des enfants,soyez vigilant.

Ne tirez pas sur le cordond’alimentation pour transporter

l’appareil, n’utilisez pas le cordond’alimentation comme poignée, nefermez pas une porte sur le cordond’alimentation, ne le passez pas surdes extrémités ou des recoinstranchants. N’utilisez pas les brosses àparquet, les accessoires et les

tubes au niveau de la tête pour éviterdes blessures aux yeux et aux oreilles.

N’utilisez pas l’appareil pouréponger des surfaces de liquides

inflammables ou combustibles, tels quel’essence, ou dans des pièces où detels liquides pourraient être entreposés.

N’utilisez pas l’aspirateur pouréponger des surfaces, car cela

pourrait nuire à la sécurité électrique del’appareil. Attendez que les tapisfraîchement lavés soient secs.

N’utilisez pas l’aspirateur pourramasser un objet brûlant ou

fumant, tel que cigarettes, allumettesou cendres encore chaudes.

Ne nettoyez pas de l’encre enpoudre avec l’aspirateur. L’encre

en poudre utilisée pour les imprimanteset les photocopieurs peut êtreconductrice d’électricité.

Éteignez toujours l’aspirateur avantd’attacher ou de détacher

l’électrobrosse, la turbobrosse ou unaccessoire.

Ne faites fonctionner l’aspirateurque si le sac à poussière, le

réservoir à poussière et les filtres sontbien en place. N’utilisez que des sacs àpoussière doublés et des filtres Miele(consultez la section "Entretien" pour lesinstructions d’insertion du sac àpoussière et des filtres). Si vous n’avezpas inséré un sac à poussière, lecouvercle du réservoir à poussière nese refermera pas. Ne le forcez pas !

Pour aider à dissiper la chaleur quise produit si vous faites fonctionner

l’aspirateur pendant plus d’une heure,le cordon d’alimentation doit êtredéroulé de l’enrouleur aux deux tiers aumoins.

L’aspirateur est muni d’un limiteurde température qui éteint

automatiquement l’appareil s’il chauffetrop. (consultez la section "Questionsfréquemment posées").

Pour absorber la chargeélectrostatique qui se produit

lorsque l’aspirateur fonctionne, unepièce métallique est placée sous lapoignée de l’appareil. Assurez-vousque votre main enveloppe bien cettepièce métallique.

Utilisation des accessoiresL’électrobrosse Miele est unaccessoire électrique utilisable

uniquement avec les aspirateurs Miele.Il ne doit pas être utilisé avec desaspirateurs d’une marque autre queMiele.

Lorsque vous nettoyez avecl’électrobrosse ou la turbobrosse

Miele, ne touchez pas la brosserotative.

Soyez prudent lorsque vous utilisezl’aspirateur avec une électrobrosse

et un tuyau porteur de courant. Letuyau contient des fils électriques.N’utilisez pas le tuyau s’il estendommagé, perforé ou s’il porte desentailles. Évitez d’aspirer des objetstranchants.

La prise de l’aspirateur (en fonctiondu modèle) ne doit servir que pour

l’électrobrosse Miele destinée à cetappareil.

Utilisez uniquement desaccessoires désignés par Miele.

N’utilisez pas la soufflerie pour fairefonctionner des pistolets à peinture oudes dispositifs semblables qui émettentdes substances volatiles ou toxiques.

Surveillez le voyant indiquant quele sac à poussière doit être changé

et vérifiez régulièrement tous les filtres.Afin d’assurer une aspiration efficace,nettoyez-les ou remplacez-les, lorsquenécessaire, selon les instructionsd’utilisation. Pour garantir la sécurité del’appareil, utilisez uniquement des sacsà poussière, filtres et accessoiresoriginaux de Miele.

Les sacs à poussière Miele sontjetables. Ne les réutilisez pas.

N’utilisez pas l’aspirateur sansaccessoire. Vous pourriez en

endommager le pourtour et vousblesser en touchant l’extrémitécoupante.

EntretienSi le cordon d’alimentation estendommagé, ne le remplacez que

par un cordon d’alimentation originalMiele disponible chez un détaillantautorisé.

Ne laissez pas l’aspirateurbranché. Débranchez-le lorsque

vous ne l’utilisez pas et avant deprocéder à son entretien.

Ne placez aucun objet dansaucune des ouvertures. N’utilisez

pas l’aspirateur si une des ouverturesest bloquée. Veillez à ce que poussière,peluches, cheveux ou autresn’obstruent pas l’aspirateur, ce quipourrait réduire le débit d’air.

Le tuyau d’aspiration et le tubetélescopique renferment des fils

électriques. Les prises mâles nedoivent pas se trouver en contact avecde l’eau. Ces éléments peuvent êtrenettoyés seulement avec un tissu sec etnon humide. L’humidité constitue unrisque de choc électrique.

Nettoyez l’aspirateur seulementavec un tissu sec ou légèrement

humide lorsqu’il est débranché. Nel’immergez jamais.

Cet appareil est muni d’unenrouleur de cordon automatique.

Tenez la fiche lorsque vous rembobinezle cordon d’alimentation et ne la laissezpas fouetter le plancher.

Ne procédez pas à desréparations à l’exception de celles

précisées dans la section "Entretien".Toute autre réparation devrait êtreeffectuée par un technicien autorisé. Lefabricant ne peut être tenu responsablede réparations effectuées par untechnicien non autorisé.

Mise au rebut d’un vieilappareilAvant de jeter un vieil aspirateur aurebut, veuillez couper le cordond’alimentation et rendre la ficheinutilisable. Assurez-vous que l’appareilne constitue aucun danger pour lesenfants avant de le ranger en vue de lejeter.

Attaching the hose^ Slide open the dust compartment

shutter (depending on model).

The dust compartment shutter isdesigned to prevent dust and odorsfrom escaping. If you remove the hosefrom the vacuum cleaner for storageclose the dust compartment shutterbefore putting it away.

^ Insert the elbow into the suctionsocket.

Removing the hose^ Press the release buttons on the side

of the elbow and lift the hose from thesocket.

Connecting the hose and thetelescopic wand^ Fit the handpiece of the hose firmly

into the wand. Turn the handpieceand wand in opposite directions untilthey lock with a click.

^ To release the handpiece from thetelescopic wand press the lockingbutton (see arrow) and pull apart.

Connecting the 2-piece suctionwand sections(select models)

Both sections of the telescopic wandhave locating arrows. When connectingthe tubes, ensure that the two arrowspoint to each other.

Adjusting the telescopic wand(select models)

Once one section of the telescopicwand is inside the other the height canbe adjusted for comfortable vacuumcleaning.

^ Press the telescopic wand releasebutton (see arrow) to release thetubes and adjust the height.

Note: When a resistance is felt it hasreached its maximum length. Do notforce it beyond this length!

Attaching the floor brush(select models)

^ Insert the telescopic wand into thefloor brush and turn in either directionuntil it locks with a click.

^ To release the floor brush from thetelescopic wand, press the lockingbutton (see arrow) and pull the wandout of the floor brush.

The floor brush is suitable for cleaningcarpets, rugs, and hard surfaces. Forflooring susceptible to scratches, useone of the special Miele floor brushes(see "Optional accessories").

Adjusting the floor brushVacuum carpets and rugs with thebrush retracted:

^ Press the foot switch marked g.

Clean hard floors with the brushprotruding:

^ Press the foot switch marked h.

Electrobrush / TurbobrushSome models may be supplied with anElectrobrush or a Turbobrush as astandard accessory (see "Optionalaccessories"). Please refer to theseparate operating instructionssupplied with these brushes forinstructions on use and maintenance.

The tools are located in the accessorycompartment, where they can berearranged after use.

Taking the accessories out^ Press the release button to open the

accessory compartment lid.

^ Take out the accessory needed.

^ Close the lid securely.

The different tools can either be fitted tothe handpiece or to the suction wand.

Crevice nozzle(select models)

For cleaning in folds, crevices andcorners.

Crevice nozzle extension(select models)

For cleaning in folds, crevices andcorners.

This accessory can be used to extendthe length of the crevice nozzle bypulling out the inner section.

^ Press the locking button to pull theextension piece out or to push it in.

Dusting brushFor cleaning moldings, ornate orcarved articles, etc.

The head of the dusting brush can beturned to attain the best cleaningposition.

Upholstery nozzleFor cleaning upholstery, mattresses,cushions, curtains, covers etc.

Power cord

Unwinding

^ Hold the plug and unwind cable tothe required length (max 21’ 4" /6.5 m):

,If the vacuum cleaner isoperated more than 30 minutes thepower cord must be unwound atleast 2/3. To reduce the risk ofelectric shock, the vacuum has apolarized plug (one blade is widerthan the other). This plug will fit in apolarized outlet only one way. If theplug does not fit fully in the outlet,reverse the plug. If it still does not fit,contact a qualified electrician. Donot alter the plug in any way.

Rewinding

^ Unplug the vacuum from the outlet.

^ Step onto the rewind switch and thepower cord will rewind automatically.

Adjusting the suction(models with rotary selector)

The suction power can be regulated tosuit the type of flooring. Select themiddle suction setting (symbol d) forcarpets and a higher setting for smoothand hard floors.

Opening the air inlet valveThe air inlet valve can be opened toquickly reduce the suction power of thetool being used, e.g. when moving froma carpet to an area rug.

Park-SystemA Park-System has been designed forconvenient parking of the telescopicwand at the vacuum cleaner duringpauses.

^ Attach the floor tool in the parkbracket of the vacuum cleaner.

Transport and storage^ Stand the vacuum cleaner vertically.

^ Fit both clips of the floor brush intothe two point holder on the side of thevacuum.

This makes the vacuum easier to carryand store.

When to change the dustbag^ Change the dustbag as needed.

The dust bags are disposable andintended to be used only once. Donot attempt to reuse.

Checking the dustbag changeindicator

^ Attach the floor brush to the vacuumcleaner. Only test with the floor brush,other accessories can affect thefunction of the dustbag changeindicator.

^ Set the suction power selector (ifpresent) to the highest setting andmake sure the air inlet valve isclosed.

^ Hold the wand off the floor and turnon the vacuum claner. If the markercompletely fills the indicator window,change the dust bag even if it is notcompletely full.

How the dustbag change indicatorworks

The indicator shows a decrease in thevacuum performance, independent ofthe actual fullness of the bag.

If fine dust, such as drill dust, sand,plaster or flour is vacuumed, the poresof the dustbag become blocked. Themarker will indicate that the bag is "full"even when it is not. The dustbag shouldbe changed as the suction power isgreatly reduced.

If the bag is bulging with pet fur, hair,carpet fluff etc. the indicator may notregister "full". This is because the airflow of the dustbag may still be highenough not to activate the marker toshow maximum. The dustbag shouldstill be changed.

The Miele filter system consists of threefilters - dustbag, dust compartmentfilter (motor protection), exhaust filter -which must be replaced.

When to replace the dustbagand filters

DustbagChange the dustbag as needed. Onlyuse genuine Miele F/J/M dustbags.

Exhaust filtersDepending on the model, the vacuumcleaner will be equipped with one of thefollowing exhaust filters:

a "SUPER air clean" filter

b "ACTIVE air clean" filter

c "ACTIVE HEPA" filter

SUPER air clean filter and Dustcompartment filter

Change the "SUPER air clean filter" andthe Dust compartment filter whenopening a new box of Miele dustbags.One of each filter is supplied with everybox of Miele dustbags and should bechanged when starting a new box ofdustbags.

ACTIVE air clean filter

The "ACTIVE air clean filter" is acharcoal filter which absorbs odorsfrom the dust in the dustbag. It shouldbe replaced yearly or when odors arenoticable. Write the replacement dateon the filter label.

ACTIVE HEPA Filter

The "ACTIVE HEPA filter" is an odorabsorbing charcoal filter which shouldbe replaced yearly. Write thereplacement date on the filter label.

This filter traps respirable particles andallergens from being exhausted into theroom air. It is particularly suitable forallergy sufferers and those concernedwith a high level of hygiene.

Replacing the dustbag^ Open the dust compartment lid.

^ Press the release button for the dustcompartment lid and raise the lid untilit clicks into place.

Changing the dustbag

^ Grasp the collar by the two fingerholes and pull it out from the dustbagholder.

The dustbag has a flap which closesautomatically to prevent dust fromescaping when the dustbag isremoved.

^ Dispose the dustbag with the normalhousehold waste.

^ Do not unfold the dustbag whentaking it out of the box. Keeping itfolded will prevent it from gettingcaught when the dust compartmentlid is closed.

^ To insert a new dustbag push thecard collar securely into the frame asfar as it will go.

^ Close the dust compartment lid firmlyuntil it clicks into place.

Changing the thread catcherThe thread catcher pads on the bottomof the floor tool and the upholstery toolshould be checked occasionally.Replace the pads if they appear worn.

^ Use a knife or similar object toremove the thread catchers from theslots.

^ Press the new thread catchers intothe slots.

Servicing the floor roller

A Unlock the axle lever.

B Pull out the roller axle.

C Take out the roller.

^ Remove all threads or hair andreassemble the parts in the reverseorder.

,Do not use abrasive, glass or allpurpose cleaners! They will damagethe surface.

Dust compartment

The dust compartment can, ifnecessary, be cleaned using a drycloth, dusting brush or a secondvacuum to suck out any dust. Monitorthe change dustbag indicator andinspect all filters regularly. Clean orreplace them when necessaryaccording to the Operating Instructions.

,Do not submerge the vacuumcleaner into water! If moisture getsinto the appliance there is the risk ofan electric shock.

What if the vacuum cleaner turns offwhile vacuuming? On several modelsthe thermo indicator , lights.

The vacuum has overheated. Thetemperature limiter switched off thevacuum automatically. On selectmodels the , thermo indicator lights.

Check the telescopic wand and thehose for blockages. Replace thedustbag or filters if necessary. A heavilysoiled exhaust or dust compartmentfilter can also be the cause ofoverheating. Turn off the vacuumcleaner using the On/Off switch.

Unwind the full length of the powercord. Allow the vacuum to cool downfor 30 minutes.

Disposal of the packingmaterialsThe cardboard box and packingmaterials protect the appliance duringshipping. They have been designed tobe biodegradable and recyclable.

Ensure that any plastic wrappings,bags, etc. are disposed of safely andkept out of the reach of children. Theseitems pose a danger of suffocation.

Disposing of the dustbag andfiltersGenuine Miele dustbags and filters aremade of environmentally friendlymaterials. They can be thrown out withthe household trash provided thevacuum has been used only for normalhousehold dust.
