CINCINNATI BRIDGE ASSOCIATIONJim Myers, Reporting

There are three pleasures that duplicate bridge players experience. From time to time, we win. More frequently, we get to complain about our partner’s bonehead play or bid, as our own mis-takes are induced by partner. Thirdly (and best of all, every day), we yammer endlessly about the number of opening hands we are dealt, the temperature in the room, the speed of the game, the direction of the sitout, the style of the director, the length of the breaks, the incomprehensible bidding or the rudeness of an opponent, emana-tions from the smoking room, and many more inconveniences.

In a cynical attempt to decrease this third and most important of our pleasures, CBA has purchased and installed a new duplimate machine to deal random hands (ending the grumble about the old machine’s breakdowns and about manual shuffling and dealing) and all new cards (replac-ing those stuck together with grape juice, apple juice, and peanut butter). Swiftly countering this move to decrease our pleasure, the committee of cranks and crabs (CCC) has determined that the hands dealt are not random and that the clubs and spades look too much alike. They cannot prove it,

but they unanimously believe that this explains why they don’t win more often.

In further incursions in this ongoing battle, CBA has seen to the repair of the formerly sieve-like roof of the Cincinnati Bridge Center and has replaced most of the grungy chairs that CCC loved to hate. “Too dry! Too hard!”

So, how is it that we experience all this plea-sure for three and one-half hours at a time for only $5.00. It is clearly the doing our outstand-ing board members and others. It is people who make CBA such a great place to play. Thank you (in almost, but not quite random order) Alex Pappas and Jerry Violetta, Joy and Hal Norris, Pat Newman and Patti English, Potter and Sandy Orr, Fred Pollack, Carolyn Ahlert, Tom Deddens, Steve Megerle, Larry Klein, Cecelia Gleisinger, Carol Greve, Frank Lichtenberger, president Joe Lutz, Whoops — and you (I almost forgot). Thank you directors who, for want of page space here, toil in anonymity, appreciated all the same. Thank your mentors for passing on the game we love and mentees for taking a fresh look at it. Finally, thank you opponents for leading those unsupported aces.

— PERIPHERAL VISION —Bradley Bartol, Reporting

Space in the Monitor is a little tight this time around, so I thought I’d share one of the most interesting bridge problems I’ve heard about in a long time.

Here’s the little puzzle for you to ponder over the summer. I’ll have the answer for you next time.

Not long ago one of my favorite partners was playing in a nearby tournament. His partner, in the South seat, held the following hand:

♠ 9 7 3 2♥ 7 5 2♦ 9 8♣ 6 5 4 2

As one might imagine, South had little to say during the auction. Also not so difficult to imagine, he was the only one.

North opened ♠ , and East followed in

tempo with 2NT. South passed. West bid 3♥, and North bowed out of the bidding. East put the 4♥ card on the table, another pass from South, and West eventually crawled out of the tank with 6♠ . North returned to the auction with a double.

It was at this point that East lost her poker face. After some clearly unhappy consideration, she somewhat emphatically placed 7♥ down in front of her. West countered with 7NT, and North doubled again. Three passes later South was squarely in the quandary I’ve laid out for you.

What do you lead? And what in the world has happened in this auction?

Here is the complete bidding again:

NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST♠ 2NT Pass 3♥Pass 4♥ Pass 6♠ Double 7♥ Pass 7NTDouble Pass Pass Pass

DERBYTOWN HAPPENINGSGail Slater, Reporting

The Louisville Bridge Club has a new home: 404 Dutchmans Lane. The phone is still the same, 897-358. A tremendous amount of vol-unteer hours headed by our president Ken Hayes made it all possible.

Just a little over a week after the move, the club took advantage of the increased space and hosted a very successful 299’ers sectional tourna-ment. The top point winners were Mary Gillim, Sarah Roy, Aurelia Huffman, Ellen Schmidt, Marjorie Crone, Gail Slater, Theodore Flach, David Strait, Joe Sharp, and Robert and Dianne Johnson.

The 299er winners were:Saturday Afternoon Pairs, Strat. A: Sarah Roy

and Mary Gillim tied with Aurelia Huffman and Joe Sharp. B and C: Sarah Roy - Mary Gillim.

Saturday Evening Pairs, A and B: John and Gayle Holmes. C: Bob and Diane Johnson.

Sunday Swiss Teams, A: Ellen Schmidt, Marj Crone, Tedodore Flach, David Strait. B: George Shelton, Sheryl Yoffe, Rex Swauger, Gail Slater. C: Sarah Roy, Mary Gillim, Barbara Partlow, Patsy Baker.

We are proud to announce that Bob Ezell be-came Life Master at the Gatlinburg tournament. Jim Watson just became a Silver Life Master.

Two Louisville teams competed in the finals of a knockout for bracket three in the Lexington sectional: Aurelia Huffman, Barbara Hulsmeyer, Frank Nelson, and Ken Gustafson were victorious over Jeanne James, Perry Moore, Vangie Smith, and Sandy Spears. We were well represented in the Friday pairs game with Maryann Clark and Jackie Yockey coming in first ahead of Jane Naiser and Abby Lussky. Dennis Hesthaven and Marsha Kyle won the Saturday open pairs.

Plan to attend the Lexington-Louisville Regional in November at Caesars Hotel and Casino in Elizabethtown, IN (just across the river from Louisville). You could earn more than masterpoints!

MIAMI VALLEY BRIDGE ASSOCIATIONTerry Parker, Reporting

The Dayton-Columbus Inter-City match was held Saturday, May 28, in Columbus. The food was marvelous, the bridge great fun, and the hospitality of the Columbus unit was just outstanding! Now the bad news — Columbus won. Seriously, their teams played a fine match and deserved to win. Congratulations to the Co-lumbus team and Dayton is looking forward to hosting Columbus at next year’s match!

Dayton is planning a “Come Back to the Club Month” this July in an effort to re-ignite the inter-est of players who haven’t played for at least the last year. During July, these players can play at the club as many times as they want for a dollar each time. The former player who plays the most times in July and the one who wins the most mas-terpoints will each receive two free sessions at the Columbus-Dayton regional in August. Other units in our district might want to try something similar to bring our old friends “back !”

There have been numerous health and other problems recently for our members and their families. Howard Bandow lost his father recently, and has also been suffering heart and other health problems. “PJ” Lorrigan suffered a heart attack in late May, and at the time of this report was

stable. Two of our members had both knees re-placed — “Doc” Williamson and Len Solganik. Finally, Harold Sebourn lost his house to a fire recently! Our prayers and best wishes go out to these unfortunates!

A reminder that the Columbus-Dayton Re-gional is just around the corner (early August) — check out the schedule and plan to attend!

Finally, here is a bridge hand from a recent club game in Dayton. You pick up a rather un-usual hand: ♠— ♥AQxxxx ♦— ♣AJxxxxx. You open one club (no one vulnerable), and hear a one diamond overcall to your left. Partner now makes a bid that you didn’t particularly want to hear, four spades. Right hand opponent passes and it’s up to you. If you passed, good job — four spades is down one — anything else is worse! Partner holds eight spades to the AKJ, four diamonds to the jack and a stiff club. The diamond jack takes a trick, as the AKQ are to your left and diamonds were led four times. Unfortunately, the spade queen was third for the setting trick! I guess the moral of this hand is having a spade so you can trump a diamond! Oh well, see ya at the table!
