It’s hard to believe we are almost at the end of another sorority rear.  This was a year marked with celebrating 100 years of sisterhood and service.  I count it a privilege to have been able to celebrate with many of you at the 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade, our Founder’s Day Celebration and Delta Days in the Nation’s

Capital and at our Torch events in Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit.  Now we are preparing to meet in July at our 51st National Convention in Washington, DC.

However, let us continue to be about the business of Delta as we celebrate. Sorors, let’s have a strong finish to this sorority year.  I expect each of you to support your chapter’s remaining programs, be present at our last two sorority meetings and complete all compliance paperwork on time.

Before we know it, Sorors will be in Washington, D.C. painting the town crimson and cream. I look forward to the opportunity to highlight the region’s great work at the Midwest Region’s Sisterhood Luncheon during the 51st National Convention.  As we celebrate with all of our sorors in July, let’s make sure we show them how we do it in the Midwest: From the Heart We Lead, We Serve and We Empower.

Delta Love and Mine,Regina R. HarperRegional Director

Greetings sorors of the Mighty Midwest Region! I hope all the collegiate sorors have ended the academic school year with success!

This has truly been an amazing Sorority year! The calendar has been jam-packed with Centennial activities - and we have truly celebrated in Grand Style. I have enjoyed meeting many of you at each event.

The 100th Anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage March was sobering, as thousands of us joined together to “Re-Trace the Footsteps of our Founders.” We then shifted focus to Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital. We gathered to consider legislative issues and discuss those policy concerns with our representatives on Capital Hill.

We also celebrated the Centennial with Torch activities in various cities around the Midwest Region: Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland.

Now, our 51st National Convention is just around the corner. I remind you, as we converge on Washington, DC in record numbers, we are SISTERS and our patience and civility with one another will ensure that we have a wonderful Centennial experience. Also, please watch out for our cherished Delta Dears!

As an organization founded on Christian principles, sorors know the power of gospel music. It is a living experience, that is always inspiring, always giving but the genre has not always been recognized. That was until Chicago native Don Jackson and his wife, Soror Rosemary Jackson, gave us the Stellar Gospel Music Awards. Soror Jackson says she and her husband founded Central City Productions in 1970 to create original programming to inspire and encourage African-Americans. Jackson says, years after the company was founded, her husband went to a gospel concert and had an idea. “He said gospel artists did not get the recognition they deserved and that they should and it should be on television,” said Soror Rosemary Jackson. And the Stellar Gospel Music awards were born. Soror Jackson says Central City Productions took on the challenge of producing the gospel awards program. Jackson says it was tough to get the idea off the ground because sponsors weren’t eager to get behind religious based programming.

“It was a struggle, but we kept the faith and we focused on the fact that we were doing this to honor God’s work,” said Jackson. Now in its 28th year, Jackson says the Stellar Awards is the first and longest running, gospel music awards show in the country. It is now syndicated in over 140 markets nationwide and, Jackson says, other organizations, like the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, now recognize gospel music. “I’m just really proud of the fact that Central City stayed with it when it was really tough” Jackson’s husband, Don Jackson, is still the executive producer of the awards program but Jackson says she isn’t the only soror on board. Her sister, Soror Erma Gray Davis, is President and Chief Operations Officer for Central City Productions and her niece, Soror Jennifer Jackson, is an executive producer. The Stellar Gospel Music Awards is now a lasting legacy. An idea inspired by the power of gospel music and, Soror Jackson says, sustained by God’s grace.

CHAPTER

BNAC Celebrates 30 Years

On March 27, 1983, Hortense Golden Canady, the Sorority’s 18th National President, chartered the Bloomington-Normal Alumnae Chapter (BNAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. 2013 marks, not only 100 years of sisterhood for Delta Sigma Theta, but 30 years of BNAC serving the Bloomington-Normal community. With so much to celebrate, the chapter launched a weekend of events. BNAC president, Soror Angela Carr said, “I really and truly feel an extra sense of renewed sisterhood and commitment to our sorority after this weekend. Let's carry these sentiments forward through the rest of this sorority year.”

CHICAGO ALUMNAE AND LAMBDA CHAPTER

March for Babies

In support of the Sorority’s National initiative, the Chicago Alumnae Chapter, sponsored a team during the March of Dimes March for Babies event on April 28th. Team CAC walked with their new partners from Chicago State University’s Nursing Department and the collaboration with Delta Literacy and Lambda Chapter. Each participant made a donation, secured sponsors and walked. The March of Dimes has been supporting families and their babies through education, hands-on support and financial assistance for seventy-five years. Coordinated by the Physical and Mental Health committee,

Team CAC walked with thousands of other groups from the Chicagoland area, including members of the Divine Nine, each with a singular goal of helping the March of Dimes to raise funds to increase awareness of premature births and the important support for healthier babies. Team CAC began their collaborative outreach during the March chapter meeting. The team provided information on the March of Dimes and the March for Babies event, signed up walkers and called on chapter members to support the event by contributing and spreading the word among their families and friends. On the campus of Chicago State University, Team CAC members identified their marching partners, as well as provided information on the event.

ROCKFORD ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the

Women’s Suffrage March

The Rockford Alumnae Chapter stayed busy in March 2013 participating in two events celebrating the Sorority’s Centennial. On March 11, sorors commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage March that originally took place March 3, 1913. State Representative Chuck Jefferson held a forum to discuss the involvement of various women’s organizations in the Women’ Suffrage March. Rockford Alumnae’s president, Soror Joy Sockwell, was one of the featured speakers giving a historical perspective to the community of the important role our 22 founders played in the march. On March 23, members of RAC proudly participated in the Chicago Torch Celebration, marching with the RAC banner down the cold streets of Chicago.

The chapter of celebrated National Women’s History Month, and its anniversary, at the Elgin Artspace Lofts Gallery on March 2. The chapter was chartered on March 2, 1991, and has over 60 active members. The community was invited to view an exhibit featuring the members, accomplishments of the Sorority and celebrate the chapter’s 22 years of service in the Northwest Suburbs. Celebrating Sisterhood and Service was the first event in the beautiful gallery of the Elgin Artspace Loft. It was befitting that Artspace, whose motto is building better communities through the arts, welcomed the chapter into its space.

EAST ST. LOUIS ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Hosts Walk in My Shoes

East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter sponsored “Walk in My Shoes,” in support of victims of Domestic Violence. Twenty-five women participated in the event that was held Saturday, February 23, at the Delta Economic Development Center in East St. Louis, Illinois. Soror Cheri Smith is Domestic Violence Chair. The exercise allows women (and men) to “walk in the shoes” of abused individuals. It is a preventive educational tool that helps men (and women) better understand and appreciate the experiences of the abused, with the goal of helping improve gender relationships and decreasing the potential for violence. It also shares information with the community about services that are available for recovery. Debbie Mize, director of the Violence Prevention

PEORIA ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Hard At Work

On Saturday, February 16th, the Peoria Alumnae Chapter held a “Delta Day Party.”  The music, food and Mardi Gras theme made the event fun while supporting a worthy cause.  A portion of the proceeds raised at the day party were donated at the March of Dimes Walk in Peoria, IL on April 20th.  The Peoria Alumnae Chapter volunteered and assisted with set-up, tear down and food distribution at the Peoria March of Dimes Walk.  The Peoria Alumnae Chapter, in collaboration with the Central Illinois Links, Inc., presented the 2013 Day of Impact.  The theme for the event was entitled “Finding the New You: Embracing a Healthy and Active Lifestyle.”

The free event provided the community with creative ways to enhance lifestyle changes to impact their physical and mental health. Representatives and experts from the Peoria healthcare community presented educational sessions and fun physical activity sessions such as Latin dance and Zumba. The Day of Impact was held on March 9, at Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center. The event encouraged healthy living by engaging the community, collaborating with health care professionals and raising awareness on the fight against obesity.

SPRINGFIELD-DECATUR

ALUMNAE CHAPTER

EVANSVILLE ALUMNAE CHAPTER

“If Not Us, Who? If Not Now, When?”

Local and national TV stations and newspapers covered Evansville Alumnae Chapter’s commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage March. After the march, in which other local women’s organizations took part, several sorors participated in a re- enactment

play entitled, “If Not Us, Who? If Not Now, When?” The play was written especially for EAC by a local playwright to chronicle Delta’s involvement in the Suffrage March. Sabrina Stewart-Thomas, chapter president, was one of nine women to receive an award at the annual Phenomenal Women of University of Southern Indiana and the Community event. The event, held during Women’s History Month at the University of Southern Indiana, honors and celebrates women of diverse backgrounds who have made extraordinary contributions to USI and to the community at-large. The program inspires other women to embrace and promote diversity within their own lives. EAC was also recognized at Leadership Evansville’s annual Celebration of Leadership event for its outstanding public service to the community. Celebration of Leadership honors individuals, businesses, organizations, and projects that make significant, collaborative, and sacrificial contributions that improve the lives of people in need. Finally, the chapter organized an exciting Impact Day that included group ZUMBA exercise, followed by a healthy lunch. After completing a one mile walk through Evansville’s downtown historic district to the scenic Ohio River walkway, sorors gathered to register themselves and other participants for the Get to the Goal initiative promoted by the American Heart Association.

BLOOMINGTON ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Serving the Community It is estimated that every nine seconds a woman is assaulted. A new initiative for the sorority focuses on educating our community and providing tools to help residents recognize and prevent domestic and sexual violence. Bloomington Alumnae Chapter hosted a domestic violence awareness program: “What’s Love Got to do With It? Taking Back My Life.” The program included: a monologue and a poetry arts segment from a victim who shares her personal story of abuse. Participants also viewed a clip from the movie “What’s Love Got to do With It?” starring icon Tina Turner, who also suffered spousal abuse; and a presentation from local advocate, Elizabeth Lopez, who provided information on how abused women can get the assistance they need. The event was held at the public library in Bloomington and more than 35 people attended. The chapter also hosted its fourth annual pancake breakfast fundraiser at Long Horn Steakhouse in Bloomington. Sorors worked and served with help from Gamma Nu undergraduate Chapter and students from the Betty Shabazz Delta Academy. All proceeds support scholarships, public service, and community programming. Under the leadership of Dr. Mary Howard-Hamilton, a passionate and fortuitous leader, this small but mighty chapter has now become an award winning chapter. The Bloomington Alumnae Chapter received the coveted Building Bridges Award. It was presented to the chapter at Indiana University’s 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebratory

Breakfast for rendering service to the Bloomington community.

ANDERSON-MUNCIE ALUMNAE CHAPTER

College Bound Basketball Program

Young athletes in the Muncie area were exposed to college opportunities off the court, thanks to a partnership between the Anderson-Muncie Alumnae Chapter, the Muncie Boys and Girls Club and Union Missionary Baptist Church. This collaboration gave more than 80 elementary and middle school students the

opportunity to participate in College Bound Basketball. Partially funded by a SEED grant, this program encourages young athletes to think about their future off the court, considering college readiness and vocational training opportunities. The program’s overall objective was to prepare a captive audience of basketball tournament players for college access opportunities. To that end, day two of the three day educational program focused on introducing the students to college and how choices play an integral role in their success. College Bound Basketball also addressed misconceptions and common ideas the athletes had about academic preparation and college access.

HOPKINSVILLE ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Investing in Young Minds

The Hopkinsville Alumnae Chapter presented the Annual Christmas Scholarship Fundraiser in December 2012. The event is a holiday celebration where the community joins the sorority in observing the Educational Development component of the Five-Point Program Thrust. Each year, as part of the program, Hopkinsville sorors present a scholarship to a recipient who despite their circumstances, is determined to succeed. The 2012 recipient is Nannie Croney. Nannie is the daughter of a single parent and has six siblings. She is pursuing her studies at the University of Louisville and has a 4.0 grade point average. Her dream is to become an attorney

and the voice for juveniles in the legal system.

FRANKFORT ALUMNAE CHAPTER

“Show Me the Money”

The Frankfort Alumnae Chapter held a workshop entitled “Show Me the Money!” at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office on Lakeview Court. The event, coordinated by Soror Daphne Jackson, was

organized to teach valuable career exploration and work and college readiness skills to middle and high-school students. The workshop began at 9:00a.m. Participants were divided into two groups, by age, to hear from local presenters.

“School Success” was presented by Omar Gletten from the GEAR-UP Kentucky Program presented School Success, Rana Johnson from the Kentucky Council on Higher Education presented “College Preparation”, and Mark Hoover, from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority, presented “Obtaining Financial Aid.” Participants also heard about “The World of Work” from Frankfort business owner William Morton and “Military Opportunities” from Major Bobbi J. Mayes from the Kentucky National Guard.

Panel highlights included a slideshow presentation and photos from Major Mayes’ tour in Afghanistan focusing on the work she did with economic and social enhancement of women and girls in that region. In addition, the participants engaged in a team-building exercise focused on thinking outside the box to achieve a goal.

PADUCAH ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Participates in theTournament of Roses

When Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated became the first African American Greek Letter organization to have a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade, there were 100 walkers representing the centennial and 22 walkers representing the sorority’s founders. One of those sorors, Soror Sonya Thompson, is a member of the Paducah Alumnae Chapter. Below Soror Thompson’s firsthand account of what it felt like to walk in this historical moment.

I can’t express in words what pride I felt walking down Colorado Avenue in Pasadena, California, making history with my beloved sisters of Delta Sigma Theta. It was an honor and privilege being chosen to represent the sorority in this historic event. The parade and Gala were kick-off events marking our centennial, and I can only imagine what is in store for the remainder of 2013. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is known for public service, community involvement, and making history. This we did, and we did it in a big and profound way. It is truly a blessing and honor to be a part of an organization of college educated women dedicated to “Transforming Communities through Sisterhood & Service.” How fitting as this was the theme of our float in the Tournament of Roses Parade. The theme of the entire parade was “Oh the Places You Will Go!” This is also fitting as Delta made it to the Rose Bowl Parade. Just think of the places we will go!

LOUISVILLE

ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Tap into Technology

The Louisville Alumnae Delta Dears started off the sorority year with a weekly lesson in technology to improve and increase Sorors’ use of digital media. The Delta Dears also visited sorors in nursing homes and hospitals and assisted one another with divorce and relocation issues when needed. This committee is very civic-minded as demonstrated by Soror Eukie Weaver who was featured on the Charla Young’s Power to Change television program. Soror Weaver is a volunteer for the Mother-Mentor Program in the Louisville community. Louisville Alumnae Chapter also commemorated the Sorority’s centennial with a weekend of activities to highlight and celebrate the impact the sorority continues to have throughout the community, the nation, and the world. On Thursday, January 10, the

Scholarship Committee hosted “An Evening of Jazz.” More than 200 sorors and guests participated. All proceeds went to the chapter’s scholarship fund. On Friday, January 11, the Membership Committee hosted “Cheers to 100 Years” at 60 West Bistro. During this sisterhood reclamation event, sorors were able to have dinner and socialize with one another. More than 80 sorors and 64 guests attended. On Saturday, January 12, Louisville Alumnae gave back to the community through service. Eighty-six sorors conducted three community service projects to benefit the families residing at the Louisville area Ronald McDonald House. Sorors cleaned the four-story building and collected and donated a total of 651 items to stock the pantry for residents. Chapter members also purchased and prepared a full dinner for the residents that evening. The chapter collected donations totaling

$2,000 to adopt a room at the Ronald McDonald House in the name of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for a full year. The donation will also help families to stay at the house free of charge. On Centennial Morning, 94 sorors and their families joined together to worship at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church. Special recognition was given to the Deltas in honor of our Centennial Founders Day. A Congressional Certificate of Honor was presented to Louisville Alumnae Chapter by Kentucky’s Third District U.S. Representative John Yarmuth and was received by Second Vice President Tina Johnson.

MICHIGAN IS ON THE MOVE

BENTON HARBOR - ST. JOSEPH ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Walking in Unity, While miles Away

It was front page news in the Benton Harbor – St. Joseph Herald-Palladium. On March 3, the alumnae chapter of these twin cities led a 100 year commemoration of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March, just as sorors were doing on that same Sunday in Washington D.C. More than 50 participants, including a charter member of the Chapter and guests from other sororities, were led by 22 sorors who each held high a sign bearing the name of a Delta Founder. The marchers gathered at Lighthouse Ministries for prayer, then walked through the community to the offices of the NAACP’s Twin Cities Branch. Lighthouse Ministries Executive Director, the Rev. Lisa Gorman, is the Chapter’s chaplain. The Chapter’s Social Action Chair and Historian, Lisa Peeples-Hurst, vice chair of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, addressed the marchers. She called the Founders’ participation in that 1913 March, the Sorority’s first public act of social advocacy, “an act of sheer heroism.” The names of each of the 22 Founders were then read aloud.

DETROIT ALUMNAE CHAPTERCentennial Celebration is City-wide,

Chapter’s Logo Goes Worldwide

Detroit was selected as the 12th stop on Delta’s National Torch Tour and made community service a component of the event by also kicking off the “100 Ways to Serve,” volunteer opportunity link-up campaign. Representatives from non-profit organizations and committed metro Detroiters joined Deltas on a symbolic march and passing of the torch to kick-off a year long, city-wide campaign to inspire and promote volunteerism. The campaign encourages metro Detroiters to take a “Pledge to Serve” and provides more than 100 selected hands-on service activities of non-profit organizations. For more information, go to www.100waystoserve.org

The Chapter is also presenting a year-long exhibit of Delta memories and memorabilia at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. “Celebrating a Century of Sisterhood, Scholarship & Service 1913 – 2013,” is a curated exhibit of historical, educational and cultural icons and iconic images, documenting Delta’s 100 years of service to the community.

All events, including a full size “poster quality” fold out brochure, have been branded by the graphic designs of Detroit Delta Fay Jackson. Jackson created the gold centennial logo that chapters and individual Deltas in the U.S. and abroad have used for their events and social media presence. Now “imported from

Detroit,” this DAC centennial logo (with the strategically omitted localization of our chapter’s branding) has been embraced as a symbol of Delta’s Centennial literally all over the world.

EPSILON EPSILON CHAPTERDelta Week at Michigan State

was Flaming Hot

Epsilon Epsilon Chapter’s Delta Week began with a program entitled “Flaming,” which commemorated the 22 Founders, a skit reenacting the founding, musical selections by Soror Shelia Roby, dance by Soror Ashley Staley, a step from the current chapter, and reflections of key moments in Delta history. The February event attracted a crowd of 150 people.

The week continued with programs that aligned with the Five Point Programmatic Thrust and the Chapter’s domestic violence prevention initiative. The week’s programs addressed the educational disparities between the majority and ethnic minority communities and the problem of foreign and domestic human trafficking. The week ended with community service at the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing, and a church service. During Epsilon Epsilon’s Delta Week the chapter sold cupcakes to help fund the annual scholarship ball.

Epsilon Epsilon continued the semester by collaborating with the Lansing Alumnae Chapter to host Michigan’s Statewide Founders Day. Falling under the initiative Project ACE, this allowed collegiate sorors to be mentored in event planning and to establish relationships with the alumnae chapter. Epsilon Epsilon will continue the semester with the Giving Hand Scholarship ball on April 13. Two students will be awarded scholarships for their efforts to better the community through service.

FLINT ALUMNAE CHAPTERCommunity Basic

Needs Fair

Partnering with the Flint Public Library and a wide variety of social service agencies, sorors of the Flint Alumnae Chapter volunteered for the Fourth Annual Community Basic Needs Fair. Deltas assisted agencies in providing information and assistance with temporary shelter, long-term housing, healthcare, warm clothing and nutritious food. Bags of needed goods were also distributed to the first 70 families to attend.

“The Flint Public Library co-hosted this event to increase the community’s awareness of the services available through agencies, during these tough economic times, and also of the resources available through the expert staff, collections and services of the Flint Public Library,” said Wanda Harden, the library’s public relations coordinator, a member of Flint Alumnae.

The event was widely promoted through the local media including WJRT TV-12 (ABC), WFLT 1420 AM, African American Inspirations radio, and press releases to various newspapers. As a result, the event drew more than 100 attendees – all of whom received services. Members of the Flint Alumnae Chapter celebrate being able to assist the more than 70 families who attended the Community Basic Needs Fair.

They are active leaders in their community, and maintain high academic standards. They are the 18 young ladies, in grades 9-12, who participate in the Grand Rapids Alumnae Chapter’s Delta Gems youth group. Participants have learned about financial aid from Ferris State and Grand Valley State University representatives, had a personal finance workshop with representatives from Huntington Bank, and workshops on topics such as ethical decision-making, positive self-imaging, and connecting college study to career readiness. This year, the Delta Gems will host the first annual “Dancing with the Gems” event to showcase the Divine Nine youth programs in Grand Rapids.

The Chapter is also busy raising dollars for youth. On February 16, they welcomed 200 sorors, family and friends at their annual jazz brunch, “A Red Carpet Affair,” held at Charlie’s Crab Restaurant. The event raised more than $12,000 for scholarships that will be presented during May Week.

The Chapter’s other mentoring involves working with collegiate Deltas in Lambda Pi Chapter of Grand Valley State University, Tau Psi Chapter of Hope College, and Zeta Rho Chapter of Ferris State University, to celebrate Founders Day on Sunday, January 13, on the campus of Grand Valley State University. Members were invited to begin the day by worshipping together at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church, followed by a special rededication program. Sorors then enjoyed fellowship at the banquet, which included poetry, singing, and a powerful presentation by Velva Flowers, of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter, who brought the audience to their feet. The celebration concluded with awards and special accolades bestowed upon members who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to their local chapters.

MIDLAND ALUMNAE CHAPTERDouble Red!

For Heart Health

There are some occasions when Deltas, and non-Deltas alike, all go red. That’s what happened when the Midland Alumnae Chapter partnered with the American Heart Association for the Great Lakes Bay Region GO

RED for Women Conference in February. Some 250 women from all around the region and nearly two dozen sorors from both the Midland and Saginaw Alumnae Chapters gathered in red to support heart health. Chapter member Kimberly Houston-Philpot served as the executive chair for the annual conference event which raised more than $100,000 for AHA cardiac disease research and educational programs. This is the fifth year that the chapter has sponsored the GO RED event.

Journey,” for Pontiac Alumnae Chapter’s Centennial community celebration. Nearly 200 sorors and community guests took a walk down memory lane via a display of Delta and Pontiac Alumnae artifacts. A living museum featuring exhibits that came to life showcased historical aspects of the sorority, including the Women’s Suffrage March, Fortitude, the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, Arts and Letters and international Delta projects. “Our goal was to share our Centennial celebration with the sorors and the community in which we serve,” said PAC President, Valerie Reese. “Delta has always been in the business of transforming lives and impacting the community, so why not celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion with members of our community.” The program designed by the Founders Day and Arts and Letters committees included interpretive dance and a musical tribute, as well as a video highlighting Delta and Pontiac Alumnae history. The Pontiac Alumnae and Southfield Alumnae Chapters received a special proclamation from the Oakland County Board of

Commissioners commemorating the sorority’s centennial milestone.

Magnificent MINNESOTA

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL ALUMNAE CHAPTER

A Chapter Focused on Sisterhood The Minneapolis-St. Paul Alumnae Chapter has been busy focusing on planning the 16th Annual Literary Luncheon featuring Walter Mosley, 8th Annual Delta Dear Tea, and the 1st EMBODI program. In preparation for a politically charged year, the chapter has planned a Voter Education and Registration Drive for the Twin Cities community. This was a perfect follow-up to the large part that the chapter contributed to Greek Day at the State Capitol in conjunction with the fellow Divine Nine chapters in the Twin Cities. While the chapter is busy planning, there continue to be amazing events to enhance the sisterly bond within the chapter and its connection to the community. Minneapolis-St. Paul Alumnae Chapter had an amazing Sisterhood Month in March filled with a fantastic list of events centered on the nine jewels. The activities ranged from calling an assigned Delta Dear on the 13th of March, a Zumba class paired with a diabetes seminar for sorors and the community, and reclamation efforts through cluster dinners with sorors in the same neighborhoods across the Twin Cities. Expect to see more from the great state of Minnesota and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Alumnae Chapter!

With the theme “Leaving Your Legacy,” Nu Phi presented a special video it created as a tribute to the Founders for guests to view. The special guest speaker, Midwest Regional Director Regina R. Harper, gave a phenomenal speech. Soror Harper gave everyone in the audience something to think about. “We are a movement by ourselves, but we are a force when we are together,” said soror Harper. As these words settled in the hearts and minds of the audience, the room was filled with love and appreciation for one another. The program ended with a celebratory “stroll-off ” with Sorors from Nu Phi, Columbus Alumnae, and Epsilon Rho chapters.

COLUMBUS ALUMNAE CHAPTER

The Columbus Alumnae Chapter and Nu Phi Citywide Chapter partnered together for I.M.P.A.C.T. Day of Service at the YWCA in Columbus, Ohio. The focus that day was childhood obesity. Under the theme, “Let’s Move, Stomp Out Obesity” the day began with a workshop to discuss ways to prevent childhood obesity. WILBERFORCE ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Hosts Founders Day

Our long anticipated Founders Day observance, a Candlelight Centennial Dinner was held March 17, 2013, in the Ballroom of the Wright Patterson Banquet Center. The theme was “Our Past…To Our Future.” Dinner chimes opened the event followed by the National Anthem and other musical selections rendered by the Air Force Security Assistance Center Unity Choir.

Sorors Shasta Sain and Laverne Sci presented a centennial vignette, a dramatic presentation of Miss Hallie Quinn Brown (an Honorary member

of Delta Sigma Theta) and an inspiring yet confused young woman who lacked direction and goals for life. The dramatization was outstanding and it showed how Soror Brown redirected the young woman to pursue opportunities and seek empowerment through education, contribution, and becoming a member of the organization that was started by twenty-two dynamic young women at Howard University in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta. Keynote speaker, Ohio State Coordinator Soror H. Michelle Toney, presented vast perspectives on Delta’s contributions to our families, communities and our nation all inspired by the determination of our visionary founders. Soror Toney emphasized the notion that Delta was predetermined and therefore it is. She enforced our theme by revealing that our organization’s courage and strength has enabled us to meet the needs of the 20th century with purpose and well defined goals. She challenged us to continue in this 21st century to follow in the footsteps of our Founders and make a difference through service and friendship to others.

commemorated 100 years of sisterhood, scholarship and service across the world. “We were founded by 22 undergraduate students who were ready to speak out for social justice during their time and we’ve continued that legacy of speaking out for social justice during our time as well,” says Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, the 22nd Past National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the keynote speaker for the EPAC Founders Day celebration. “They were women who were academically on the top of their game and we continue to promote academic excellence even 100 years later,” Boyd adds. “We are so excited about the Centennial and this celebration of our Founders Day here in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. As a young chapter (chartered in 2007) we have done some amazing things in such a short time,” says Dr. Angela Oglesby, President of the EPAC. “We have numerous community service projects, such as mentoring groups, Delta Gems, Delta Academy, an annual Jazz Brunch and Silent Auction scholarship event, March of Dimes programs, Domestic Violence Initiatives, healthily lifestyle programs, and many more. Finances Matter

The Blazing Beckley Alumnae Chapter presented a Financial Fortitude Workshop on Saturday, October 20, 2012. The workshop was presented as a part of the Beckley Area Women United in Christ Fall Conference held at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Tony Mazelon, Financial Consultant with Hilliard Lyons, discussed the importance of developing an individual or family financial plan, a practice that is rarely done within our community. He also shared tips to help individuals create a more secure financial future. One tip was to prepare a personal financial statement, annually. The statement should be made up of assets minus liabilities. Another tip is to prepare a monthly cash flow statement which shows how much money is coming in versus how much is going out. Mazelon also discussed the difference between useful debt and bad debt and shared debt elimination strategies. He ended his presentation with the importance of planning for retirement and how 401K’s and employee-sponsored retirement plans can help with the planning process.More than 50 women, between the ages of 22 to 80, participated in the workshop. The attendees expressed their appreciation for the information that was presented. Lisa DeLilly is the president of Beckley Alumnae Chapter.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

WISCONSIN

ZETA XI CHAPTER

A Few Good Men Members of the Zeta Xi Core chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority wanted to do something different for the young men in their EMBODI program. Feeling that the participants had already heard much wisdom from sorors, they decided to draft a few good men for their event held on February 15. Hosted at West High School in Madison, Wisconsin, the event took on the form of a student organization fair. Organizations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, primarily focused on serving the male student body, were invited to the high school to staff tables and talk to EMBODI students. The young men heard from Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternities, in addition to the African Student

Association, the Wisconsin Association of Black Men, the UW School of Education and more. They learned about career opportunities and planning ahead for their future, yet particularly enjoyed

getting to learn a few steps usually reserved for Greek step shows. Staff from the university who attended this first-time event remarked that they hope this will not be the last time for A Few Good Men.

MILWAUKEE ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Invites Guests to Take a Journey to Wellness

For Women’s Day/National Impact Day of Service, the Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., invited the community to take part in its “Journey to Wellness.”

The March 9, event was hosted by the chapter’s Mental & Physical Health Committee. The keynote speaker for the day was Soror Kimberly Montgomery, one of ten 2013 Go Red spokeswomen chosen nationwide by the American Heart Association to celebrate the Go Red Campaign’s tenth anniversary. She shared her personal story of surviving a heart attack.

A physically active and health conscious person, Soror Montgomery didn’t consider herself to be a candidate for heart disease. However, one afternoon she became suddenly ill after a hot yoga class. She was nauseous and sweating profusely – two symptoms of a heart attack. At a friend’s persistence, Soror Montgomery went to an urgent care clinic and was taken immediately to a hospital emergency room. The move saved her life.

“We need to be reminded to take care of our bodies and pay attention when something is not right,” said Soror Montgomery. “We tend to focus so much on how everyone around us is feeling that we forget about ourselves.”

In addition to Soror Montgomery’s message to take charge of one’s health, all guests had access to information and screenings provided by the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute, After Breast Cancer Diagnosis and the Sisters Network, Inc.

After the presentation, Deltas gave out “hand prints” with facts and statistics related to African-American women and Diabetes. In addition, sorors also presented information about breast cancer and why it’s important to do monthly breast exams.

2013 commencement speech at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. Those in the running for the honor were required to submit a speech and go through a round of interviews. “Support your beliefs. Remain strong in your ideals. Never waiver with your morals.” Those are just a few of the words that captured the attention of the selection committee. Some of Soror Nelson’s activities and experience most likely did, as well. Pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting and a minor in Spanish, Soror Nelson had the opportunity to be an intern at Ernst & Young. Less than a week after the internship ended, she traveled to London, England, for four weeks and participated in yet another three-credit travel study course that concluded with a trip to Beijing, Xian, Kunming, Guilin and Shijiazhuang, China. “Whitewater has been the single most important factor that

contributed to developing each of us into the socially responsible individual that we have become,” further writes Soror Nelson in her speech.
