Midwest Fjord Horse Club www.mwfhc.org spring 2010 President’s Message S pring is HERE! Soon for the midwest we'll see seeing robins and flowers, we’ll hear the birds singing and smell the fresh aroma of spring! Unfortunately we have to go thru the muck and yuck until we get to dry ground, green grass, flowers and birds but it is COMING! The MWFHC'S winter meeting was held March 5-7th in Oregon/Fitchberg WI. It was PERFECT! We had a great line up of hands on, learning of the basic horsemanship skills, lectures on how the weight of our horses, diseases horses can get, emergency care, dressage demo, ski joering which also was hands on and a talk on the ins and outs of trail riding. Really, if you were not there, you missed another great event. I think our winter meeting/clinics are really a great tool for our members. I know many of you just plain can’t make it, and that is why we have been making the DVDs. A new DVD is hot off the presses, “How to fit tack to the Fjord horse’. It’s a great informative and educational DVD and I’m really really pleased with it. The new one is $15, the first one on mane trimming is $10 or you can order both for $20, online at www.mwfhc.org. Shipping is included. We want our members to be as educated as they can, so between the winter meeting, Blue Earth, and our DVD’s we hope we are managing to do that. Now it’s on to planning for Blue Earth! It’s the show’s 25th anniversary and we are planning bigger and better things for this year. We are working on sponsorships, prizes, a back drop for picture taking and one of the BEST is that classs are going to be retro to the prices they were 25 yrs ago! All entries are going to be only $3 a class! That is a saving of $7 per class! We really hope everyone will seriously consider coming this year. If you can’t bring your Fjord, there is plenty of work, so just let me know and we'll find a job for you. Working at a show gives you a great learning experience, plus it's fun! Susie Sadlon is heading up our Tuesday night performance, “Fjords Got Talent”. We will be performing with horses and music for the Blue Earth community. If you like to be a part of it, we would love to have you all. We can use more than just riders or drivers. If you don’t have a horse and want to help, contact Susie Sadlon! From the President of the NFHRby Howard Fiedler

Spring has arrived. This is a good time to plan for shows, evaluations, clinics, trail rides and all the other things we love to do withour Fjords.

I am very excited with the makeup of our new board of directors. We have a group of very motivated individuals who are working onimproving our communications and services that we offer our membership.

The NFHR now has a communication coordinator, Margaret Bogie, who will be sending out numerous Constant Contact emails toinform members of our current actions and topics of interest. Our first Constant Contact informed members about the new “Friend ofthe Fjord Herald” program. We are encouraging donations to help financially support the production of the Fjord Herald, our flag-ship publication. The response has been great.

The NFHR has become a breed partner with the ADS, American Driving Society. You willsee advertisements in the Fjord Herald and the ADS Whip Publication. We will be sharingeducational information including “Webinars” on many interesting topics. An article andpictures are also on the USDF and USEF websites. This is all helpful in reaching more peopleand letting them know how versatile our beloved fjords are.

The Marketplace has many new products with our new logo, which can be purchased on theNFHR website. The NFHR website can also be used to renew your membership and makedonations to a committee of your choice. The NFHR accepts credit cards and PayPal forpayment.

You can help achieve our goals by getting involved. We have many committees and activi-ties that need your help. Our ambassador program has members in most every state that arefrequently contacted by folks to learn more about Fjords and the NFHR.

Thank you for your help and enjoy your Fjords,

Howard FiedlerNFHR President

Celebrate 25 Years of the Blue Earth Fjord Show

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the 25th Annual Blue Earth Fjord Horse Show, this July 19,20 & 21, 2010. To celebrate 25 years of Blue Earth, show class fees have been adjusted to $3.00 per classfrom $10.00 in 2009 and several special sponsors have agreed to help celebrate and contribute to the

show.

This will be a great year for youth participants as several youth classes have been added to the show including Sin-gle Log Skid-Youth and Pleasure Driving Youth. Driving classes including Gamblers Choice, Double Jeopardy andPick Your Route also have separately judged youth divisions.

Along with the Youth and Adult High Point Awards, a Driving High Point award will also be introduced this year.A few games classes have also been added this year including a Plug Race (one barrel-barrel race) and Pole BendingRace.

Participants of the Blue Earth show have also been requested to participate in the Faribault County Fair Grand-stand show Tuesday evening to help celebrate 150 years of the Faribault County Fair. If interested in participatingin the Tuesday evening show, please contact Susie Sadlon.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with gates and assist with the show office. Volunteering is a great way tolearn and meet other fjord enthusiasts. If interested in volunteering, please contact Kathy Blaszczyk at#262.692.3521 or [email protected].

MIDWEST HORSE FAIR

April 16-18, 2010, Madison, Wisconsin

The MWFHC will be hosting an information booth at the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin. The purpose is to pro-mote our Club and the Fjord Horse breed.

VOLUNTEERS: We are looking for volunteers to spend an hour or two at the booth to talk to interested visitors about the fjordhorse, and hand out materials. The booth is located in the Coliseum, so volunteering will be a nice way to rest your feet for a bit,and share your enthusiasm for the fjord with others. The booth hours will be Friday 8:30 am-7:00 pm, Saturday 8:30 am-7:00pm, and Sunday 8:30 am-5:00 pm. We need lots of volunteers! If you would be able to sign up in advance that would be a greathelp in our planning, but you are also welcome to sign up at the booth.

ADVERTISEMENTS: We want to distribute your advertisements at the booth. Anything horse related is welcome -- stallionservices, horses for sale, training, boarding, lessons, harness, tack, equipment, horse events, etc. This is a great way to reach over50,000 horse people in the Midwestern region!

Two options for advertising: Club Flyer: If you have just a few listings, send them to me by Wednesday, April 14th for inclusionin a flyer. If there is enough space, we will include one black and white photo per ad, otherwise the ads will be text only. Yourcopy may be edited in order to fit the space. Please send your ads by April 14 to [email protected] or Karen Hanson,328 Cty Rd N, Edgerton, WI 53534. Your own flyer: If you have your own pre-printed farm brochure, salesflyer or business card,we will be glad to distribute them at the booth. Please provide 20-50 copies. Bring them to the booth early on April 16th, or mailthem to Karen Hanson, 328 Cty Rd N, Edgerton, WI 53534 (plan for the mail to deliver by April 14th).

Jag tycker om MWFHC Winter Meeting /Clinic!!!

The MWFHC held its annual Winter Meeting and Clinic on the weekend of March5-7, 2010 in the Madison, WI area. On Friday night, we attended a wonderful pres-entation of do-it-yourself leather repairs and modifications by DeeAnna Weed, and

learned some great pointers on what to look for in quality leather tack. Members had thechance to do some hands-on work with leather, various types of rivets, buckles, snaps andeven hand sewing leather.

Saturday’s events were held at the Mandt Equestrian Center. Learning seminars includedBasic Horsemanship 101 by Patti Jo Walter; Liz Sandberg showed us how to tell if your Fjord is too chubby; Kate VanSicklen spoke on dressage for all disciplines; and Dr. Lisa Nesson presented Communicable Disease and Emergency Care

- what to do before the vet arrives. The afternoon was topped off with a presentationon Skijoring with Joni Griffin and Wanda. We learned about skijoring tack, equip-ment, “how to’s” and safety. The highlight of the afternoon was a live demonstra-tion of skijoring and the chance to join in on the fun using skis and inner tubes. Theintrepid members who gave it a try found out that skijoring is not as easy as it looks! It was a sunny, fun-filled day for everyone.

That evening we enjoyed an Italian buffet and a presentation on trail riding andcamping with Fjords. Alond with displays of wood, cloth, paper and leather, the auc-tion was a big success again this year and many door prizes were given out to luckymembers.

On Sunday we had our last chance to purchase lovely wood carvings and embroi-dered apparel from our vendors. Nancy Hotovy shared her wonderful photos of camping in the west. The subject of ourlast presentation was the ongoing research into the origin of white markings in Fjord horses presented by Robin Holland. The weekend was capped off with a club meeting.

Mange takk to all who attended and especially to all who volunteered their horses, time and effort to make our weekendpossible!

The mane trimming video offers practical, clear answers to tough ques-tions such as:• Why is a well trimmed Fjord mane so important in the show ring?• How can the arch in the mane enhance the horse’s overall conforma-

tion?• What can be done with “difficult” manes (overgrown, bushy, thick)

to make them look better?• How should the rest of the horse’s ears, poll, nose, jaw, and neck be

groomed?

Narrated by Pat Holland and Patti Jo Walter with demonstrations byRobin & Pat Holland. Filmed, edited, and produced by Patrick Walter.

In the Fitting Tack video, Michelle Endries, owner of Horsey Habit inManitowoc, Wisconsin, explains how to choose tack that correctly fitsFjords -- or any other size, shape, or breed of horse. About half of thisinformative 27-minute video shows Michelle's practical, easy methodto evaluate the fit of English and western saddles.

Michelle also discusses these topics:• Choosing the right size, shape, and style of saddle pad• Selecting a girth or cinch and placing it correctly to avoid sores or

discomfort• Using shims to adjust saddle fit if necessary• Fitting bridles, bits, and halters for comfort and effectiveness• Sizing and using sport boots and shipping boots
