WORSHIP COVER ART We are created in the image of God [Imago Dei] which means that our Creator God gifts us with creativity! If you are interested in designing cover art for the worship folder please contact the office. The process is fairly simple—you will be given the scripture that is the theme of a service and upon which Pastor Karin will preach. You interpret the scripture in any media and submit to the office either in original form or in a jpeg or png file. If you have questions or need a bit of direction we are happy to help with that as well. All are welcome! FLOWERS Each Sunday congregants are given the opportunity to honor a loved one, to celebrate a special day or give glory to God by placing flowers at the front of the sanctuary to enhance the worship space. We also have had some congregants fund an account at Elena's Flower when no one signs up for a Sunday; however, those funds are depleted at this time. We pray that you would consider signing up for a Sunday on the flower chart on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board so that our worship space will continue to reflect the beauty of God’s creation! Thank you, Janet Rowley

Dear Friends, As I write this, I am in silence. Our District Superintendent invited me to a retreat, mostly silent, called Voice of the Heart. It is a brief time of silence, prayer, confession and introspection for renewal here at Camp Pecometh. The dreary weather has added a somber touch to this time, but has also quieted my heart as I seek to listen to God. It is difficult to do this with the daily church clutter often drowning out the still small voice of the One who beckons each of us. But my prayer is that I will learn to be more attentive to God—not in the doing as in the being. Still, it is a practice that takes discipline and intention—just as so many of our life practices! I look forward to our time together this Sunday as we also celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday. Kudos to the St. Paul’s Ringers—who have brought us terrific music to our worship this year!!! I hope you will offer your thanks to Shelley and each one of the ringers:

MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES

Our opening hymn for the 11 AM worship service this Sunday is “When Morning Gilds the Skies.” Several musicians, one unknown and three relatively well known in the church music world are responsible for the version of this hymn that appears in the current United Methodist hymnal. The name of the original composer is unknown. We do know that his or her work appeared in a Roman Catholic hymnal in Germany sometime in the early 1800’s. As originally written, the hymn had 28 verses but most hymnals today (including the current United Methodist hymnal) only have four. Edward Caswell translated three of the verses (current verses one, two and four) from German into English in 1854. Caswell was the son of an Anglican clergyman, was ordained as an

Anglican and converted to Catholicism. In addition to this hymn, Caswell translated a number of hymns from Latin into English––the best-known being “Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee.” Robert Seymour Bridges, a medical doctor and Britain's poet laureate from 1913 to 1930 wrote the current verse three. The most popular tune for this hymn and the one used in the current United Methodist hymnal (Laudes Domini) was composed by Joseph Barnby. A musical prodigy, Barnby began serving as an organist and choirmaster at the age of twelve and was knighted by Queen Victoria for his many contributions to church music.

Blessings, Shelley

GENTLE OFFICE REMINDERS

Pastor Karin’s email is [email protected]. The office email is [email protected] –please note that they are different.

Pastor Karin wants to give you her complete attention when you have questions or matters to discuss. In order for the Pastor to devote 100 % her attention to your needs and concerns we kindly ask that you avoid addressing these matters at Sunday worship time and that you contact her during regular office hours from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or make an appointment so that she can give you the attention you deserve. Please honor Pastor Karin’s Sabbath day which is Friday.

Building Ministry & Church Calendar – If your group is meeting at the church during the week please check the church calendar to ensure your space is reserved. Please contact the office if your meeting is canceled or needs to be rescheduled.

Stewardship of the building is extremely important as we take care of our privilege to have a building that is safe and secure. We also want to make sure it is welcoming to our guests. Please pick up litter in the church yard. If you are meeting in the church please lock the doors & turn off lights upon exiting the building.

RECYCLE UPDATE: We MUST dump the contents of the recycle trash bags into

the RECYCLE bins outside; otherwise the recycle folks won’t take them. So when you are taking out the recycle, simply “pour” the contents out of the bags and into the recycle bins. If you have questions please see Sue Holden or Pastor Karin.

NAMI Delaware’s Mission is “to support, educate and advocate until there is a cure for severe and persistent mental illness”. 302-427-0787 www.namidelaware.org ST. PAUL’S MISSIONAL GIVING IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS You may have noticed the insert in our Fellowship Pads which tallies our missional giving in the 12 months leading up to Easter. The TOTAL was $27,026.93 which does not include our

apportionment giving of $23,141which is substantively missional. YELLOW HAT OFFERING of $604.09 from this past Sunday went to Rev. Ann Cottom. Rev. Cottom's

daughter passed away suddenly on April 8. At that time she was living in Mexico and the Mexican coroner's office is requiring $23,000 to release the body back to her mother here in the United States. We thank you for your generosity as we seek to offer a healing presence to Rev. Cottom in her grief.

fast pace. We will be completing the construction, painting and spiffing up, putting up fence, working with kids and preparing for the dedication of the church. Currently Pastor Karin is taking one teen and an adult from Skyline UMC; while we already have our tickets there is room for more team members. Contact Pastor T if you are interested. Here is how you can assist in this effort:

or support two card-making events Pastor Karin is holding—you will make all-season cards [3 cards of 4 designs for a total of 12 cards for $25]. The times of this will be announced in next Midweek. Wayne Jones, from the Mississippi Seashore District Conference, is the current Nicaraguan Church build coordinator. He is under direct supervision of IGLEMEN, the governing board for the Methodist Church in Nicaragua. After IGLEMEN decides where the next Church will be built, Wayne meets with the local Pastor and IGLEMEN to decide specific needs of the area. Plans are then drawn up and a budget is made to determine cost of the project.

Two Bathrooms $4,500 Caretaker Room $4,800 Sunday School Room $5,300 Temple $19,000 Interior Furnishings $1,500 Mural & Signage $ 700 Porch $3,200 Kitchen $2,400 Entrance $1,800 Miscellaneous exp, truck, fuel, materials transport, etc. $3,000

Total Budget $46,200 Amount pledged $35,000 Shortfall $11,000

By using the team build approach, each church raises money and serves 1-2 weeks building the Church. Whenever possible Wayne hires Church members to help with construction. As most of you know Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere with an average income of less than $2 per day. The local workers are employed for around 2 ½ months giving them a financial, moral, and just as important, pride of ownership by helping build their place of worship! Additionally, each Nicaraguan Pastor that we helped commits to send a team to help build each new church. This year teams from Esteli, Villa Roma, and Masatepe will send teams to Las Parcelas, Leon to help on this year’s build.

Another trip is planned for October or November for a church build at La Mejada, also outside of León, again based on the timeline scheduled by the site manager.

Cystic Fibrosis Strides Walk in memory of Kendall Reed

May 6, 2017

My family and friends are once again raising funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Strides Walk that will be held on May 6, 2017. This will be our 11th walk in memory of my son, Kendall, who died at the tender age of 23. Those of you who knew Kendall will remember him as an ornery guy, with a half-cocked smile and not a care in the world. He played baseball, wrestled, fished, and loved hunting. Most people would never have guessed that he had a terrible lung disease that would cut his vibrant life so short.

Kendall’s wonderful family and friends have raised about $93,000 for research for this dreaded disease since his passing through this walk and the former Roosterfest. The Cystic

Fibrosis Foundation has made remarkable advancements in this field, and I believe there will be a cure someday. I also know that Kendall’s family and friends have played a vital part in the

foundation’s success. But it is not over until we find that “cure.”

Please join our “Red Rooster” team at Dravo Plaza @ the Riverfront in Wilmington [815 Justison Street near the Frawley Stadium]. Check-in time: 8:30 a.m. Walk at 10 a.m. If you can’t join us, please consider a donation to the “Cystic Fibrosis Foundation” to work towards a cure so that other kids may have a chance at a full life.

Please read the attachment showing the accomplishments that the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has made since Kendall’s passing and know that your donation does help.

Thanks so much!!! Charlotte Checks can be made payable to: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and mailed to: Mrs. Ronald Miller 275 Cassidy Wharf Road Earleville, MD 21919
