With “Cut-and-paste” or ”Love-and-Laugh” into 2012

Die Lewe is ‘n Lied

The term “cut and paste” comes from the “old world” practice in manuscript editing whereby people would literally cut paragraphs from a page with scissors and then paste them onto another page. Today it most of-ten relates to a specific set of commands used in our human-computer interaction to move data or text in and between documents.

So in a world of “cut-and-paste” and where there is a need to “drag-and-drop”, the question begging an answer is whether “love-and-laugh” still carries the same charm and impact in the modern day as in the pre-computer years? A lot can be achieved through “love-and-laugh” and we trust that 2012 will present our readers with a multitude of opportunities to “love-and-laugh” in every possible way, and that we may again share some of that with you through your local newsletter.

Mag elkeen se lewe hierdie jaar ‘n lied wees!

Carpe Diem

pg 4The Midrand Estates Newsletter - February 2012

The Midrand Estates newsletter team paid a visit to Midstream College on the first day of school this year and met the bright eyed and bushy tailed “building blocks” of the College and the future. At the high school the grade 8’s are called “bricks” that will be cultivated over the first month to admirable members of the College whilst the grade ones were inducted into the intricacies of holding a pencil correctly and finding their own lunch box.

These scholars are the future and will, through out the year, place a number of building blocks towards their own future and also that of the greater community. Whilst the Bible teaches that a house must be built on a solid foundation, there are much more to contemplate at this stage on the future and with that the con-tinued placement of building blocks.

One of the questions that jump to mind in considering this virtual building project is what design will be followed – will the design be a copy of others? Or perhaps a design forced down by others? Or a design started without careful planning? If no design is yet in place – are they in capable hands that will guide them towards a meaningful design? And so one can engage in the mind game regarding the building blocks of the future - will the blocks be strong? Is the foundation strong enough? And so on.

Irrespective of our age, we are in fact laying blocks of the future everyday and inevitably the sides of our walls will touch those of others. In the end it is important for everyone to, hopefully, take a step back and admire the blocks he/she has placed and also be able to compliment the neighbour on his/her building project. We know that a large number of building blocks will be placed in 2012 – may it be an enjoyable experience!

regtig nuut?

Gari, one of Midstream’s residents, has a passion for macro photography, and sent us these lovely pictures of what he calls the “hidden beauties” of Midstream. Gari often drives around the estate or takes a walk on the footpaths with his camera, always on the hunt for impressive flowers in bloom.

Residents are invited to send their pictures and share their discoveries within the estate with the rest of us. How about a study of interesting door or window frames? Or a study on a fauna or flora subject?

CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s best-loved events in support of a worthy cause. The ninth annual CANSA Shavathon will be held this year, with over 300 workplaces and organisations taking part and more than 200 shopping centres supporting the cause.

Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of Cancer therapy. So shaving one’s head has become a symbolic gesture of support for Cancer survivors; and colouring one’s hair has become an option for those who prefer not to shave.

Residents seem to treat the new back road to Midlands’ Mount Cliff gate as a racing track.

Monica writes that speeding on this road is a huge con-cern, especially after they experienced a close [accidental?] encounter recently. Residents are urged to adhere to the speed limits and keep everyone’s safety in mind in order to keep our town safe and accident-free.

LOCAL IS LEKKER...

EYECARE@MIDSTREAM

Many puppy- and kitten litters are born this time of year. Here are some health essentials to take into consideration when taking care of these won-derful little creatures.

VaccinationsThe first vacci-nation is given at 6-8 weeks for puppies and 8 weeks for kit-tens. The sec-ond and third vaccinations are given at 3 to 4 week intervals thereafter. The third vaccination will include the Rabies vaccine, which is compulsory by law.

De-wormingPuppies and kittens are often born with a worm load carried over from the mother and need to be de-wormed from 2 weeks of age [every two weeks until the age of 12 weeks]. Thereafter every 4 weeks until 6 months of age and then every 3 to six months.

Tick and Flea TreatmentsTick and flea treatment should be given to pets every four weeks throughout the year. Remember not to bath the animal three days before and after the treatment.

Prevention is better than cure!

For more detailed information about the vaccina-tions, de-worming and tick and flea treatments for puppies and kittens, visit the well-trained and friendly staff at PetStream.

Pet CareSeeing is believing!

Eyecare@Midstream, situated in the heart of the estate’s shopping centre, offers a wide range of ser-vices and products. This modern practice, owned by optometrist Elana Kriel [who obtained her B.Optom CAS(SA) degree at RAU in 1995], opened its doors in May 2008 and has served the Midstream com-munity well over the past few years.

The practice offers eye tests for adults and children from as early as the age of five years. Eye test certificates are issued for obtaining drivers’- and

boat licenses and screening tests are performed at Midstream

Primary School.

If you need new pre-scription glasses, sun-glasses, contact lenses or solutions and eye drops visit the local optometrist. They will also repair your existing glasses if

possible.

The friendly practice staff: Elana and Sunett [Optom-etrists], Rachel and Sandra at the reception desk, LOOK forward to assisting you.

Since the introduction of a para-medic service dedicated to the Midrand Estates community early in 2010, the service has provided emergency medical assistance to more than 1 000 patients, with almost 600 calls attended to dur-ing 2011. The service is provided as an ancillary service to the local medical practice, the Midstream Medical Centre,. The service is financed through a compulsory monthly contribution of R22/unit that is included in the estate levy. The call-out emergency service attracts no cost on the day and is available to all residents and their domestic workers as well as visitors.

The paramedic personnel are trained and equipped to assess the patient, do CPR (Cardiopulmonary re-suscitation), put up an IV (Intravenous) line, monitor

the heart and defibrillate, apply appropriate splints and arrange for transport/ambulance services.

It is important to note that this is not an ambulance service and can thus not transport patients. The paramedic service also does not serve as a primary healthcare service as this does not form part of their scope of work. The main aim of an ILS [Intermedi-ate Life Support] paramedic is to assess and stabi-lize a patient before deciding on the next appropri-ate level of care that the patient needs.

2011 Incident StatisticsIn 2011, 911@midstream responded to 581 calls. Almost 35% of calls were for children, with 23% of calls for children under the age of 5 years. The number of instances where young ones were treated underlines the importance of the service that pro-vides peace of mind for working parents. The main conditions encountered included bruises and abrasions from falls, fever, soft tissue injuries, concussions, lacerations and seizures.

Twenty-one percent of the patients needed transportation to a hospital, which was arranged by the paramedic at the scene [ambulance costs are for the patient’s own account]. The ma-jority of patients that needed transportation to a hospital, were adults. These were more serious conditions such as heart at-tacks, strokes, fractures of limbs, near drowning and anaphy-lactic shock.

Today (7th December 2011) the culmination of five months ’work in progress’ - what a celebration! Midstream Methodist, in conjunction with companies and individuals who care, was able to deliver 10 wheelchairs and clothing, to a ‘Disabled Centre’ and also undertook to make a monthly donation towards expenses and salaries. Black and White South Africans, able and disabled, celebrating and worshipping together sounds like the New South Africa we have all been hoping and praying for.

Two things had kept me from speaking about this and several other projects we were involved in:

No.1 falls away. The project is now complete. The second, a friend helped me with ‘Don’t confuse ‘boast-ing’ with ‘Christian action’. I believe he is right. If the church does not disperse love and concern in a practical way to a broken world, maybe nobody will. Care for the disabled is very low on the world’s agenda, on Africa’s even lower.

Jesus came to bring hope to the broken ‘It’s not the healthy who need a doctor…’

I suppose the real question is ‘why?’. Why do outreach and social con-cern? To make me feel good? No, yet it has its own intrinsic reward. To point to me? No, rather to point beyond myself to a Savior who calls me to obedience.

John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church amongst 11 other guide-lines for Christian ministry said ‘Do not go only to those who need you, but those who need you most’. Who needs your loving concern and kindness the most?

Wishing you a full and rewarding 2012.

Philip Sharpe

The annual World Robot Olympiad, an event for Science, Technology and Ed-ucation, brings together young people from all over the world allowing them to develop their creativity and problem solving skills through challenging and educational robotics competitions. Participating teams had to conceptualize, design and build a robot displaying human movements.

Three students from Midstream College Primary School - Sybrand Lourens Botes, Nico Wiese and Dehan Lamprechts – named their team “Robolution” and participated in the World Robot Olympiad in Abu Dhabi, which took place from 18 to 20 November 2011. More than 1,500 teams from 35 countries competed in the world arena following national trials. The theme of the competition was “robots for life improvement”. The team designed robots to assist autistic children in acquiring new skills. The robots were tested at

three schools, with remarkable results. Robolution was awarded third place in their category at the World Olympiad. The Abu Dhabi Department of Education as well as an U.S. institute expressed interest in the concept. Well done, Team Robolution!

Toe ek sy droewige “hoe – hooee” hoor, swerf my gedagtes baie ver terug. Ek was seker so vyf jaar oud toe ek een aand ʼn uil hoor roep en my ouma my vertel dat, wanneer ʼn uil op ʼn dak gaan sit en roep, iemand in daardie huis sal sterf.

The national roads (N1, N3, N12 and R21) in and around the met-ropolitan areas of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni in the Gauteng Province have been improved and upgraded through a project known as the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (“GFIP”). These roads, also known as e-roads, will be tolled by means of electronic and automated methods, thereby eliminat-ing the need to queue at toll plazas. This automated non-stop method of toll is referred to as e-toll.

SANRAL indicated the toll commencement to be effective in Febru-ary 2012 or soon thereafter.

The matchbox sized e-tag is beneficial for e-road

users. Though road users can be recognized by their Vehicle License Plate Number only, the ma-jor benefit is the discounts available for road users that have a working, fitted e-tag in their vehicle. Furthermore, by obtaining an e-tag and registering an e-toll account, it reduces the risk of fraud that might occur due to the duplication or cloning of vehicle license plate numbers.

The e-tag uses a special battery that can last up to five years under normal operating conditions. It is important to note that one e-tag is assigned to one ve-hicle. This is to reduce the risk of fraud. It ensures that electronic processes are in place to detect dis-crepancies between the registered e-toll account, the e-tag and vehicle license plate number that are interlinked.

What information you need to RegisterWhen registering an e-toll account, please have the following at hand: • RSA ID or passport number• Physical and postal addresses• Contact details: cell phone, landline, fax number and/or email address• Account payment details: either cash, bank account or credit card details• Vehicle license plate number• Make and model of your vehicleTo register, either visit the SANRAL website [www.sanral.co.za] or visit your nearest e-toll outlet.

Registered e-tag customers / account holders qualify for discounts. A 25% discount will be available for those users that register an e-toll tag account and install the e-tag in their vehicle, in order for the e-tag to be used as the identifier for the electronic toll transactions. This discount is available for all vehicle classes. More information about the categories and percentages of discount, can be viewed on the website.

The construction of the road that will provide a more direct link between Midrand Estates and Cen-turion is progressing well, with completion expected early in March this year.

The construction of the road involves the compac-tion of six 150mm thick layers of soil prior to the placing of the black top and did require in some instances the importation of material as the in-situ soils did not have an adequate bearing capacity to meet the rigorous requirements for the road. It is expected that five of the six layers will be complete by end of January, leaving the remaining layer and thereafter the placing of the black top that acts as a wearing course. Almost two kilometres of concrete lined storm water channels will also be constructed adjacent to the new road to complete the project.

The intersections at both Nellmapius and Brakfontein will be controlled by traffic lights with the most up to date equipment with LED lights and computerised control-lers that can be programmed to a wide range of applications. The traffic lights will be set up to the schedules pre-determined by the traffic engineers and will be moni-tored upon implementation for the final set-up.

And so the project that has been in the off-ing for many years will be completed soon and will provide ready access to residents to Centurion within the next few months.

The head boy and head girl at Midstream College are ready for their final year at school as well as their respective duties in leading the pupils in 2012. They look for-ward to the year ahead…

Amy has a love for art and dancing but has her eyes set on becoming a veterinary surgeon. She ascribes her talent in art to her father; and mentions that she enjoys the art classes at Midstream College because it allows her to be limitlessly creative. She loves dancing and has danced in various styles from the age of 6.

Amy sees her year as a great challenge where the prefect council will be involved in many events, bringing the school and the respective Grades together even more. Amy says: “2012 will be a year to be remembered.”

Her favourite quotes exemplify the person who enjoys the closeness of her family and her friends:“Do your best and God will do the rest”. The second quote given to her by one of her teachers, Ms Clark, made quite an impact: “a gem cannot shine if some-one is not rubbing it.”

George is an outdoors person that enjoys fishing and mountain biking. He has been active at school in rugby and cricket by representing the first team in his grade 11 year and then joined the school cricket team on their tour to Australia.

He believes that the year ahead will be a great year for the College and looks forward to meeting the new Grade Eights and making them feel part of the traditions of Midstream College. He also believes that the leaders elected with him are a strong team that will make his task much easier.

George’s credo in life is “Live by faith and not by sight.”

PRESTIGE AAND 2011

BIG BRAG

Fig. 1 toon ʼn tipiese propeller aangedrewe generator.

Watter teleurstelling, ek was so oortuig dat groen elektriese krag ons toekoms sou wees !!!

15 year old swimming sensation Chantel Addinall com-peted in no less than 11 events at the Northern Tiger Swimming Championships in December, winning 9 gold and 2 silver medals. The highlight of the championship was her 200m freestyle race which she completed in 2 minutes and 11 seconds, an improvement of 8 seconds on her previous time. She also won gold for 50m but-terfly stroke, an event she rarely competes in. Chantel currently swims for the TUKS club and has been invited to compete at the International Swimming Grand Prix in Durban on 28 and 29 January 2012. This is an Olympic Games qualifying event and will give her the opportunity to qualify for the Games before the SA Championships in April. Chantel will be swimming the 100m and 200m free-style and the 100m backstroke and will compete against international swimmers in the open age category.

GAUTRAIN BUS SERVICE

The Midrand Estates community was consulted through an electronic poll on the desirability of a GAUTRAIN bus service to and from the Centurion Station during November 2011. The general positive feeling towards the service was echoed by the comments provided by the respondents – ranging from “this will be a great service to us” to “hope this is successful” and “very good idea – many students will use it!”

The morning peak may attract more than 400 commuters to the Centu-rion Station; and a hundred from the station with the situation reversed in the afternoon.

Close to 300 residents indicated that they plan to use the integrated GAU-TRAIN service to travel to O.R. Tambo International Airport. Of these, 70 individuals indicated that they will use it weekly; and 133 people will use it on a monthly basis.

The poll received a positive and enthusiastic response from the Midrand Estates community where it is believed the introduction of a bus service to commute in future on the GAUTRAIN will add value to their lives. The introduction of a bus service to the Centurion Station is supported and will receive Bondev’s support to make it a viable proposition.

The report has been submitted to the consultants that evaluate the need and desirability of the bus service. Other than confirming receipt, no further feedback has been received to date.

Clean slate for Security over the December holidays.Clean slate for Security over the December holidays.

A new access control gate to Mid-lands Estate was opened towards the end of 2011 and is now fully operational. The gate gains ac-cess from the newly constructed access road to the east of Mid-lands Estate and allows residents to enter (or exit) at either of the two available gates with the same biometric (finger print) registra-tion. The access control software for Midlands Estate was also up-graded to a SQL related database which necessitated the re-regis-

tration of all residents and con-tractors to the new system.

Midlands has also been the fore-runner in introducing a contractor and visitor scanning access con-trol system for improved record keeping and to accelerate the clearance at the gates. The scan-ners tested were provided on a trial basis by SmartVillage whilst the implementation glitches were addressed. The scanners will shortly be deployed at both ac-

cess gates to Midlands Estate. It is of interest to take note that up to 5% of the drivers’ vehicle li-censes scanned have lapsed and are thus illegal – this for both visitors and contractors delivery vehicles. It is foreseen that once full confidence has been placed in the system (and thus confidence in the report prior to access of an invalid driver’s or vehicle license) access for such vehicles and driv-ers will not be allowed.

The security teams for all the estates reported that no serious security incidents took place within any of the estates over the past December holiday. With an ever growing community with more than 2760 families residing within the Midrand Estates precinct, it is the seventh year running that the flawless record has been maintained!

The single security incident of concern that was re-ported took place in late November when a sub-

contractor was robbed of a large cash amount at the parking area of the shopping centre. The in-cident confirms that everyone must be aware that persons withdrawing (and carrying) large amounts of cash attract the unwanted attention of criminal elements and where possible the practise must be avoided. The security personnel at the shopping centre have been instructed to prevent contractors and sub-contractors from making cash payment of wages in the Centre’s parking area.

Discussions with Vodacom and MTN as the two prime cell phone service providers should bear fruit in 2012. Vodacom concluded an agreement with the Midstream Estate HOA allowing the con-struction of two additional towers within Midstream to improve reception/ data transmission over cell phones. Temporary tow-

ers have been erected and will be active by end February for both Vodacom and MTN users. The towers and shade cloth enclosures will be removed and replaced by permanent structures and enclosures as soon as the formal construction plans have been approved by the Ekurhuleni Metro – a requirement for permanent towers. The permanent towers will be able to accommodate up to 4 service pro-viders.

Plans are underway for the construction of additional towers to improve the service further in Midlands. Details to follow on where and when the towers will be devel-oped as soon as a final decision has been taken and information becomes available.
