Mise en scene

• Setting. The setting for the opening sequence of this film is on a train.

The type of train is usually associated with the trains they use in America which means the film could be set in America. The train seems old and warn out as the seats are not clean or painted a bright colour showing the age of the train. The start of the opening sequence shows lights flashing past quickly which immediiatly tells us that it will be set on a train which is obvious because the title of the film gives it away.

Mise en scene

• Costumes. There is only one costume used in this opening

sequence which is a suit. The suit shows a few things. Firstly the suit shows he could be a upper class man. Also there could be a possibility that the man is coming home from work in a suit as he is on a train set in the evening time. The man looks very clean and freshly shaven which could also mean the man is on his way to seeing someone when he gets off the train such as going on a date.

Mise en scene• Figure expression At the beginning of this opening sequence the man has just

woken up on the train which could obviously mean he is tired and has a hard day at work. The man doesn't seem to be happy but confused by his facial expression when he wakes up to find that he is the only person on the train left. When the man finally gets up to figure out what's going on his facial expression and body language change dramatically as he seems to walk slowly showing he may be scared or wary of what is around himself. The man eventually slips over in a puddle of blood and struggles to get out of the puddle as he keeps slipping over showing how petrified he is. Also the camera zooms in to his hands which are trembling showing fear as well. When the man is walking towards the door his back is hunched over showing that he has just woken up.

Mise en scene• Props The man is shown to be carrying a briefcase which is a

typical stereotype view of “the working men.” The briefcase shows he could of just been at work and on his way home. Also it makes him look less mysterious with a briefcase as it gives us a small idea of what or where he has just been or doing. The second prop shown in this opening sequence is fake blood which has been made into a large puddle on the train floor. The blood is a typical generic convention of horror films so it automatically lets the audience know that the film is a horror genre film.

Camera shot

This is the first camera shot to be shown in the opening sequence which is a extreme close up. They have used this angle to emphasis the fact that the man is asleep.

Camera shots

The second camera shot shown in the opening sequence is a close up. This shot has been taken to show the man laying on the floor with there main prop (blood) on his face. Also this shot shows the worry on his face helping the audience understand how he is feeling.

Camera shot

This camera shot they have used is a long shot. This is to show the setting of where the film will be filmed (which is a train.) Also this long shot could have been used to show the lighting and the costumes used in the film.

Camera shot

This camera shot that has been used is a medium shot. It has been used to show the costume of what the man is wearing and the main prop they have used (blood) which is a generic convention of horror films.

Camera angle

This is a zooming out shot. It shows the audience of where the man is and what costume he is wearing. Also because the man is moving in this shot zooming out allows the camera to move where the man is moving without cutting off part of his body.

Camera angle

This camera angle which has been used is a tilt shot. It allows the audience to see the setting and could also be used to show something the actor may have seen on the floor if they are staring straight at the camera.

Editing

There are many cuts used in this opening sequence. The first is when the camera is zoomed in on his face in a close up then cuts out to a long shot to show the setting of the film. Also they have broke the 180 degrees rule when filming but it works well as it shows both sides of the train and both sides of the mans face.

Sound

• Diegetic sound- The begin of the opening sequence has the loud sound of the train going across the tracks screeching. The actor is supposed to hear this sound which is why it comes under being diegetic sound. Also whilst the man is looking confused the sound of sparks between the track and train are herd. When the man slips over it makes a big bang sound which isn’t physically made by the man but has been added in so it makes us think he actually made that sound when he slipped over.

Sound

• Non-diegetic sound- When the man gets up out of the pool of blood the audience can hear a quite but dramatic music in the background. They have used this to build up suspense. The music gets faster the closer he approaches the door which could represent his heart beat getting faster and faster.

Performance

The man begins the film asleep which is basic acting but when he wakes up he looks confused about what is going on around him. He looks confused because he doesn’t understand why he is the only person on the train. He walks slowly towards the end of the train building up suspense for the audience. When the camera shows a close up of the mans hands they are shaking representing fear and worry.
