Administrator’s Message by Superintendent Rodenberg
The 2016-17 school year is underway, at Midland, and the year has gotten off to a good start. This is the beginning of my
8th year at Midland and 36th year as an educator. I started my career in 1981 and the landscape of education has changed a
great deal. I remember that the most important thing at the beginning of the year was the red grade book that I used as the
main record keeping device for attendance and grades. This is just one example of the significant changes that we have seen
in education over the years. We are now very dependent on technology of some sort to function.
Our staff members have been working very hard getting the year off on the right foot. The staff has also been super
cooperative with the disruptions that the construction project at Wyoming has presented. Mrs. Reilly and her staff have
worked on these adjustments together with the idea of creating the least amount of disruptions possible to the school day. The
contractors have also been very understanding.
Mrs. Ruley, our new elementary principal, also a Midland graduate, has her staff working well together to meet the needs of
all of our students. Being new to the job, she is getting to know her students, parents and staff. Mrs. Ruley brings her years of
experience as a teacher and an elementary principal at a private school to Midland. Those experiences will be helpful to her as
she provides the leadership for our elementary school.
Our building renovation and addition project is going well. The east wing remodeled classrooms are nearly complete.
Casework and storage units are being installed by Unzeitig Construction by working second shift so as not to disrupt our
classes. The remodeled rooms are air conditioned and have a new appearance that makes them very appealing and will be very
functional once the casework is installed. It is exciting to see the changes and to think what the new construction will be like.
As many have seen the outside walls for the new gym, shop area and wrestling room have been going up over the last couple
of weeks. It is an amazing process and is the culmination of a lot of hard work that was done over the spring and summer to
get ready or the installation of the walls. The two story classroom unit’s foundation will be dug and placed during the fall of
this year with the goal of getting these areas enclosed so that work on the interior can continue year round.
Periodic adjustments to student parking during the different phases of the project will have to be made. Please be patient and
we will do our best to communicate these changes.
The support of the community through the bond issue vote, planning phase and now the construction phase has been
wonderful. The project will have a huge impact on the students of Midland for many generations to come. A sound education
is the basis of our democratic society and with the commitment that the community has made, our future looks very bright.
I encourage you to contact the office and come and see what has been done in the remodeled classrooms and get an idea of
what the future building will look like.
We did have a water problem with the current gym, which caused the floor to buckle and warp. The floor has been
removed and will be replaced once the preparations for the installation are complete. The current plan is to have the gym floor
installed, painted, sealed and ready for use by the middle or end of October. Our volleyball team will be playing their games
on the road.
Mrs. Reilly has a phrase about the project that I keep repeating, “It will be Awesome!”
I am very thankful to be your superintendent, at Midland, and look forward to a great school year.

Eaglet’s Elementary View
WELCOME to the 2016-2017 School Year! Greetings! My name is Angela Ruley and I am the new principal at Midland Elementary. I am a 1999 graduate of Midland High School and am excited to be back in my favorite district. Go Eagles!
The school year is starting off great at the elementary school. The students and teachers have been working hard to establish routines, expectations, and schedules within their classrooms. We started our first day of school with a big school-wide assembly for PBIS.
We have a lot of new faces in the building this year and a few staff changes. Angela Ruley- Principal; Deanna Martens-Instructional/Data Coach; Katheryn Shelman- Kindergarten; Charlene Tracy- First Grade; Shasta Ehrisman- 3rd Grade; Nathan Becker- 5th Grade; Hanna Ralson- Music; Leslie Cole- Paraeducator
PBIS Our PBIS team has created a new acronym/logo that was implemented at the beginning of the school year. SOAR will replace RRC. Soar stands for safe actions, outstanding attitude, always respectful, and responsible. These behavior expectations are a part of our report cards during each trimester. Students can earn tickets for modeling these behaviors during the school day and making good choices. Tickets are exchanged for rewards. Mrs. Ruley will also be choosing one student per week as the “Student of the Week” for the whole elementary school. That student will get to participate in an activity with Mrs. Ruley.
FAST UNIVERSAL SCREENER - As we begin September, there are some important things to keep in mind. We will be beginning FAST universal screener September 6th. What is FAST? That is a great question and a very important one for parents of K-5 students. Below is an excerpt from www.iowareadingresearch.org
The Iowa Department of Education is providing Formative Assessment System for Teachers (FAST) literacy assessments that can be administered to every K-6 child in the state. FAST will be used as a measure to screen students’ reading achievement three times a year (fall, winter, and spring), during a period called Universal Screening. Universal screening is the first step to identify students at-risk for reading difficulties. In addition, FAST will be used to monitor the progress of students receiving
reading interventions. FAST provides a suite of assessments and progress monitoring tools that track students’ performance in the following areas: Phonological awareness, Sounds, Words, Text reading, Reading behaviors
Progress monitoring assessments are administered to only those students who are receiving additional instruction or intervention, to determine if students are improving in reading. Together, these assessments represent a valid and reliable early warning system to identify students who are on track, as well as students who are not progressing adequately toward reading proficiency.
Elementary Reminders/Calendar Events - Please remember that you cannot get into the elementary building until 7:35 a.m. Teachers do not arrive until 7:45 and there is no supervision outside before that time.
BOXTOPS - We will be having a competition between classes for BoxTops. Please send them in!
Sept 5- No School Sept 6- FAST testing begins
Sept 7- School Pictures
Sept 18-24- Midland Homecoming Week- Check district calendar for details
Sept 23- Harlem Ambassadors assembly- 2:00 p.m. Sept 29- 5th grade field trip to Rock Creek
We hope that your students have enjoyed the first weeks of school. It is wonderful to be in such a great district! Go Black and Gold! ~ Mrs. Ruley

COUNSELOR’S
CORNER
All high school students should be busy
making a resume. Remember to include
work, volunteer hours, offices held,
organizations joined, etc.
Juniors should have already reviewed their
high school courses and activities. Please
keep in mind that colleges are looking for
challenging course work, strong grades and
participation in extracurricular activities.
Get involved! Don't sit back and let others
do the work.
Seniors should be considering college
visitations. Please visit with Mr. Ahouse
for proper forms and guidance in your
decision-making process. If you know
already what college you are planning to
attend next year, let me know ASAP so
that I can help in any way possible.
Last, but not least, ACT testing. We highly
recommend that all juniors take the test in
October, this allows them to see where they
need to work on academics and plenty of
time to retake the test. Seniors if you’ve
not taken it, we suggest you take it soon!
Visit www.actstudent.org for pertinent
details about the testing process, dates,
times and locations.
Midland's High School English Department and students will visit U of Iowa to view Shakespeare folio Sept 15th
“We are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to showcase one of the most important books ever printed,” says university librarian John Culshaw. “How appropriate that the First Folio visit the University of Iowa, in Iowa City. First Folio! will be the first traveling exhibit hosted in the UI Main Library exhibition space, which is currently undergoing renovation and slated to open later this year.
"As the only stop on the tour in the state of Iowa, we welcome all Iowans to visit the libraries and experience this unique piece of history.”
Many of Shakespeare's plays were not published during his lifetime. The First Folio is the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays. It was published in 1623, seven years after Shakespeare’s death. Two of Shakespeare’s fellow actors compiled 36 of his plays, hoping to preserve them for future generations. Without it, we would not have 18 of Shakespeare’s plays, including Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Antony and Cleopatra, The Comedy of Errors, and As You Like It. All 18 appear for the first time in print in the First Folio.
“The First Folio is the book that gave us Shakespeare. Between its covers we discover his most famous characters—Hamlet, Desdemona, Cordelia, Macbeth, Romeo, Juliet, and hundreds of others—speaking words that continue to move and inspire us,” says Michael Witmore, director of the Folger Shakespeare Library. “Shakespeare tells the human story like no one else. We are delighted that we can share this precious resource with people everywhere.”
When the First Folio arrives in Iowa City, its pages will be opened to the most quoted line from Shakespeare and one of the most quoted lines in the world, “to be or not to be” from Hamlet. Accompanying the book will be a multi-panel exhibition exploring the significance of Shakespeare, then and now, with additional digital content and interactive activities.
According to Mr. Wilson, Midland English teacher, "This is an incredible opportunity for our students to actually view one of the original texts that has influenced school curriculum and countless stories for years."
