MÉHUL LE CHANT DU DÉPART Overtures and Revolutionary Works ACD2 2659 Les Jacobins | Mathieu Lussier ARTISTIC DIRECTION Les Jacobins, the period wind ensemble named for the most famous political group of the French Revolution, returns with Le Chant du Départ, their sophomore recording on ATMA Classique. Under the artistic leadership of bassoonist Mathieu Lussier, Les Jacobins explore the rich but little-known repertoire associated with the French Revolution (1789-1799). Le Chant du Départ delves into the music of Étienne-Nicolas Méhul, the first true French Romantic composer. He wrote many patriotic works that were frequently played throughout the celebrations of the Revolution. Le Chant du Départ features arrangements of the overtures to six of Méhul’s most successful operas. The recording takes its name from one of the several revolutionary pieces included in the program, songs that were sung by the Revolutionary French armies.
