Every month at our Resident Council Meetings, I review with the residents a couple of

Resident Rights. I’m continuing on with the resident’s rights this month. Here are 2

more to review:

3. No neglect "Every resident has the right not to be neglected by the licensee or staff."

In other words...The owner and the staff at the home are not allowed to neglect you.

Neglect is when the home fails to give you the treatment, care, services, or help that you need for your health, safety, or well-being. Neglect also happens when someone, by not taking action, puts your health, safety, or well-being at risk.

For example, you have the right to get medication that is prescribed for you. If you need help getting to the toilet, you should be taken to the washroom instead of being forced to use incontinence products such as diapers, pads, or plastic pants.

4. Proper care "Every resident has the right to be properly sheltered, fed, clothed,

groomed and cared for in a manner consistent with his or her needs."

In other words...You have the right to receive the care you need. Your care should include:

a proper place to live,

enough good food to eat,

clean clothes to wear, and

help with looking clean and tidy. The staff at your long-term care home should look after any special needs you have.

HALLOWEEN AT MIDDLESEX TERRACE: This year we are going to do a haunted house in

the Activity Room as we did last year.

**On Friday October 30th, residents will partake in going through the Haunted House.

**On Sat. October 31st– we invite family members and the community to come into

the home and take a walk through the Haunted House. PLEASE BRING IN YOUR

CHIDLREN/GRANDCHILDREN ON OCTOBER 31st from 10-12 and 2:00-3:30pm FOR THEIR

TURN THROUGH THE HAUNTED HOUSE!!!!!

RESIDENTS CORNER

FUN FACTS ABOUT OCTOBER Happy Birthday to everyone celebrating their birthday this month! Birthstone— Opals

The Opals are unique in that their internal structure causes them to diffract light. For this reason, an opal can be a wide variety of different colors, depending on how the stone itself was formed. More common opals appear milky, or opalescent, in color, rather than showing the fascinating “play of color” of gemstone-quality opals. Nearly 97% of the world’s opals come from Australia, especially the southern region. Opals are often found in Eastern Europe as well. It is said that opals have healing powers and even enable the wearer to find true love. Opals were considered to be very lucky in the Middle Ages, as it was believed that they held all the virtues of each gemstone whose colors could be found in the opal’s impressive play of color. Their spectrum of color still makes them very desirable today. Flower– Calendule

The calendula is a flower that blooms in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. The ca lendula ’s name stems from the Lat in word kalendae, which means “the first day of the month.” It is a fitting name, as the calendula, or pot marigold, is usually blooming at the beginning of the month. It also goes by the names “summer’s bride” or “husbandman’s di-al,” because its flower head follows the sun. Calendula has a wide variety of medicinal properties. It has been used for centuries as an antiseptic for wounds and burns, an anti-inflammatory for sprains, and a soothing tea for ulcers and sore throats, among other therapeutic uses. It also has culinary purposes as a herb for seasoning meats and salad dishes. The calendula is thought to symbolize gratitude or sympathy. When given to someone, it implies that the recipient has winning grace.

Some famous people born during this month include: Kelly Ripa ( Oct 2 1970)

Carole Lombard – Actress (Oct. 6, 1908) Jesse Jackson – Activist (Oct. 8, 1941) Evel Knievel – Daredevil (Oct. 17, 1938)

Hillary Clinton – Politician (Oct. 26, 1947)

COUNCILS IN THE HOME

ALL residents are welcome and encouraged to attend the following meetings held monthly. RESIDENT COUNCIL - The purpose being to freely voice any concerns or suggestions in regards to decisions and tasks which affect your everyday life within the home. The meetings encourage regular communication as a group between Residents, the Administrator, and Staff. This meeting is chaired by the Life Enrichment Director unless a resident wishes to take over this position. FOOD COMMITTEE - This meeting follows Residents Council and allows the Nutrition Manager to communicate with residents as a group for such things as input into menus, snacks and special events. All Menus are reviewed and approved by this group before they are put into place. Those residents who are unable to attend the monthly meetings can pass their items for the council to the Life Enrichment Director or a fellow resi-dent. FAMILY COUNCIL Family council is a great opportunity for family/friends of their loved one to come together and share ideas/suggestions and find out more how the home runs. It is a not a huge time commitment– we meet approx 2-3 x a year. At this time we are looking for new members, please contact Char-lene Hillen if you are interested in being apart of this. Meeting minutes for both Resident Council/Food Committee and Family Council are located in binders across from both Nursing Stations.

Over the last couple of months I have be identifying some Myths

regarding Consent and Capacity in Long Term Care Homes. Here

is the last myth I’d like to review.

Myth 4: FAMILIES CAN CONSENT FOR RESIDENTS ANYTIME. Families

cannot override the decision made by a resident who is capable. The HCP

must always find out if the resident is capable to give consent in the cur-

rent situation, and ask them first for their consent for treatment. The Sub-

stitute Decision Maker (SDM) can only give consent when the resident is

not capable of making a decision. If the HCP determines that the resident

is not capable, then the HCP must contact the resident’s SDM to explain

the situation, provide them with the benefits and risks of the proposed

treatment and any other options. The SDM then consents to, or refuses

the treatment offered based on their knowledge of the resident’s wishes,

values and beliefs. There may be a court appointed guardian, or a named

SDM by the resident, done while they are capable, in a legal document

called a “Power of Attorney for Personal Care.” This person may be any-

one the resident chooses regardless of relationship, with whom they have

discussed their beliefs, values and wishes for care should they become in-

capable. This named person cannot appoint anyone else to be SDM in

their absence. Power of attorney for personal care document can only be

created by the resident themselves. Family or SDM cannot prepare a pow-

er of attorney for personal care on behalf of another person. Not all peo-

ple will have named their preferred SDM in a completed Power of Attorney

for Personal Care Document, but Ontario legislation has produced a list of

people intended to be approached in ranked order, who are close to the

resident and may have knowledge of the resident’s values, beliefs and

wishes. This allows them to consent or refuse treatments offered to the

resident when the resident is incapable of making decisions for

themselves.

Hello Everyone I want to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving Season. Alt-hough eating turkey is a great thing about this time of year…being thankful for what we have and to reflect upon this is really what giving thanks is all about. “We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.” ― John F. Kennedy From my family to yours…Happy Thanksgiving! I wanted to take this opportunity to remind all of you that when you are tak-ing your loved one out of the building it is really important to sign in and out and let a staff member know that you are leaving. From time to time this does not happen and a Code Yellow will be called over the PA system. This code is practiced and when activated tells staff that a resident can’t be found. The staff have a detailed plan they follow to locate the missing resi-dent. If the resident is not found the Ontario Provincial Police must be called to commence a search. We do also try to call the next of kin, howev-er if we can’t get a hold of that person the police are asked to search for the resident missing. Please remind friends of the family if they are taking the resident out to fol-low the same process. If you have any questions about this do not hesitate to contact me. We are continuing to look at delivery of laundry. Of the families that did re-

spond to our email sent out in August, five indicated that they had had is-

sues. About 50% of the residents that were able to respond to the question

had experienced laundry issues. It seems to be in the delivery of the laun-

dry versus labelling. We will continue to keep you up to date with changes.

Hi Everyone……

Our Veterinarian has been watching our weight

which has been increasing over the last little

while (as you might have noticed!)

We are trying to watch our weight and figure-

Please do not give us too many treats. There are

lots of people we visit here that give us treats as

well which means we are snacking all day.

Also, we have a certain food that our Vet wants us

to eat which is supplied by the home, so please do

not give us other cat food. Different types of food

makes us sick!

Thank you

Molly & Daisy

Promotion of Pleasurable Dinner Service related to Time Adjustment

As dietary has merged two short evening shifts to create a long shift to enable consistency in ser-vice while promoting job retention we have begun having the qualified cook serve meals on both floors. We have staggered hot food service times slightly to promote pleasurable dining. Elevation time remains the same. Dining times and elevation back to the floor should not be impacted as residents will continue to enjoy beverages before meal start time at 5:15 vs previously being offered beverages and hot meals at the same time. As always feedback is always encouraged Thanks for doing your part in working through change

Eileen ( [email protected]) New Fall/Winter Menu begins October 19th We have met , discussed and approved our new Fall and Winter Menu. Some adjustments have been made related to feedback provided at the Food Committee Meeting and we are looking for-ward to seasonal changes and Hearty Stews. Thanks again for helping promote pleasurable dining

I thought I would switch things up and talk a little about the skin and com-plications that can happen in a long term care home. The skin is the largest organ of the body and its functions are:

*Maintaining body temperature *Protection from germs *Gathers information for your nervous system *Allows you to feel pain, heat cold and touch.

Good skin health habits include eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of fluids and exercising to maintain a healthy weight. For a lot of residents, the simple act of moving in their chair, changing their position in bed, standing and stretching can be a struggle and for some an impossibility . When you sit or lie in the same position for a long time, pressure from body weight on the surface (i.e. chair or bed) can cut off the blood supply to the skin that is directly over the bone. This can cause the cells of the skin to have less oxygen and nutrients needed to survive. This is how a pressure ulcer may result. A pressure sore (or decubitus ulcer) is defined injuries to skin and under-lying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin. Bedsores most often develop on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as the heels, ankles, hips and tailbone. (Mayo Clinic)

At the home, all the staff work diligently to prevent this from happening. We use a multidisciplinary team approach. Some of the things we do include: A turning and repositioning schedule for the residents that are compro-

mised in any way. We look to ensure that the chair is distributing weight properly, and pressure redistribution. We have our in house PT staff that ensure the resident is sitting properly, if concerns arise, they will call the supplier.

We use pillows, wedges etc to bony areas (i.e knees and ankles) from having direct contact.

We have walking programs for those that are able. We use mechanical lifts to move the residents rather than drag them

during transfers. Risk assessments are conducted quarterly and after the resident has

returned from hospital, an LOA over 24 hours etc. A skin care regime that includes: -Skin assessments are done daily by the PSW staff during care.

Any area of redness, pressure is reported to the Reg Staff -Using a mild P.H balanced cleansing agent. (not all over the

counter smelly soaps are good) -Using barrier creams when incontinence cannot be controlled -Using moisturizers The dietician reviews and ensures that good nutrition is offered, and

considers using supplements for those that are nutritionally compro-mised.

Have yearly education for the staff

Let’s Review some information about Fire Safety in our Home: PROCEDURE DURING SOUNDING OF FIRE ALARM – (Residents)

Remain calm. The staff has been trained to respond in an emergency and they will im-

mediately begin emergency procedures.

If you are able, close your bedroom door and await further instructions from the staff.

Reassure your roommates if they are frightened and let them know staff will be coming

to assist you.

If you have a visitor, ask them to remain in your room, close the door, and stay with you

until you receive further instructions from the staff.

When a staff member arrives, follow his/her instructions diligently. Timing is critical and

our first priority is your safety.

Do not be concerned with taking your personal belongings; the priority is having you re-

moved to a safe location.

IF YOU DISCOVER SMOKE OR FIRE:

Leave the room or area at once.

Close the door to confine the fire and smoke.

Pull the nearest fire alarm pull station (the red boxes on the walls). If one is not readily

available, tell a staff member immediately of the situation. They will initiate emergency
