A park ecologist in the Kitulo National Park in Tanzania, Noel Mbise’s desire to protect the environment brought him to the Middlebury Institute as a Fulbright scholar in International Environmental Policy. Noel says that he is “really impressed with the diversity of classes and the curriculum oriented towards finding solutions,” adding that he really appreciates the strong relationship with faculty facilitated by the small class sizes.

Tamara Patton decided early in her undergraduate education to pursue a degree and a career in nuclear nonproliferation. “I was hooked on the field after my first undergraduate arms control course at the University of Washington,” she said. “The Middlebury Institute was the natural choice for graduate school, given that it offers some of the most specialized training in nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament policy in the world.” As part of the highly selective Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies honors thesis program, Tamara created a 3-D model of the Khushab plutonium production complex in Pakistan. Her research was cited for its innovation by the Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance.

International Environmental Policy alumni Alan Lovewell and Oren Frey just started their second year at the helm of “Local Catch Monterey Bay” – a successful venture combining their love for the ocean with a penchant for practical solutions to real world problems. Local Catch offers weekly “shares” of fresh, sustainable seafood to members. Alan and Oren have created a business model with benefits to the local economy, consumer health and the environment.

Karla Vargas, originally from Chiclayo, Peru, already had an MA in Linguistics and was considering a PhD when she met a representative from the Middlebury Institute at a Career Fair at Stanford and heard about the Translation and Localization Management degree program. She is now looking forward to a career that builds on her prior experience working as a freelance translator, but takes a step beyond that to add business and technological

skills. She says this degree program is like “a dream come true.” And she adds: “Everything I have been learning here at the Middlebury Institute is highly applicable to the field.”

Since graduating from college with a degree in marketing, Karla Micheli has traveled, volunteered, and worked in 20 countries. She is pursuing a Joint degree in Public Administration and International Education Management because her travels have taught her that education is “one of the best indicators of quality of life and productivity of a country. Through my studies and field work experience, the importance of education has become clear and I truly believe the biggest way I can make a difference in this world is through educating communities.”

U.S. Army veteran Marcos Medina grew up in Salinas, CA, served in Iraq, and attended the Middlebury Institute of International Studies with a Yellow Ribbon scholarship, completing his bachelor’s degree and earning a master’s in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies. He says, “the diverse ages, ethnicities and life experiences at the Institute make it easier for veterans to fit in.”

When Sky Lantz-Wagner realized that his degree in international finance didn’t match his new-found love of teaching, he took two big steps at once — graduate study at the

Middlebury Institute, and service in the Peace Corps. Sky says, “Being in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program is like being part of the all-star team of language learning and teaching. You really feel like you are in good hands when your professor has written the textbook you use in class.” Sky also praised the way his Peace Corps Master’s International experience has integrated with his graduate studies. “My first year on campus prepared me extremely well for my Peace Corps service in China. While I was in the field, Dr. Kathi Bailey and her graduate assistants sent frequent emails and occasional care packages. I felt continuously connected to Monterey, which has made readjusting to post-service life much easier.”

Cary Choy has an undergraduate degree in English literature from Williams, and came to the Middlebury Institute for “the unique programs and the offer of practical skills” in his chosen field of International Education Management. He is able to focus on “the business of education” through a joint program that also leads to an MBA degree. Cary’s professors have helped him “find new ways to think,” and he is looking forward to a summer internship in Brazil, where he will help students prepare for study in the United States.

Beatriz Rodriguez hails from the “other” Monterrey: Mexico, where she worked as a translator for 13 years before embarking on an MA in Translation and Interpretation in order to add interpreting for conferences and seminars to her skill set. Undaunted by juggling a career, two children and her schoolwork, she says, “I love it here. My professors are incredibly knowledgeable and the environment here in Monterey is wonderful.”

The 2012 London Olympics offered Korean Interpretation student Charmy Park an opportunity to practice her skills. “Apart from the interpreting, I discovered the thrill and the excitement of badminton, and the beauty and the magnificence of rhythmic gymnastics that I hadn’t noticed before on computer screens and newspapers. Seeing the athletes, their coaches and families, and their friends and colleagues, in person, made me look beyond the winners and the medals, and really appreciate and respect their hard work and efforts.”

Nicolas Chudeau was born in France but considers Hawaii home. As an International Environmental Policy student, he is spending an International Professional Service Semester as a fellow at the World Health Organization in New Delhi, India, where he works on ensuring sustainable, safe drinking water throughout Southeast Asia. “Being part of this project is both very humbling and exciting,” he says. “Humbling because it is a tremendous amount of work and the issues at hand are extremely complex, but exciting because I am taking part in the one public health intervention with the highest return on investment in terms of productivity gain and saved lives.”

An immigrant from Taiwan to the United States, Yi-ching Hwang first earned an engineering degree at Cornell, and then embarked upon a career in sustainable development and community empowerment, including two years in the Peace Corps. Her work led her to remote villages in Bolivia, Ecuador, Inner Mongolia, China, and India where she collaborated on projects such as sustainable agricultural practices, rural distribution of basic consumer products, and greening efforts in the international cashmere supply chain. With this background, helping to build sustainable businesses in India through the Frontier Market Scouts program was a natural complement to her MBA studies at the Middlebury Institute.

After volunteering in the Sacred Valley of Peru, Aaron Ebner came to the Middlebury Institute’s Master of Public Administration program with a plan… to gain the skills and knowledge that would help him make a permanent difference in the lives of indigenous Peruvians. At the Institute, he teamed up with fellow MPA student Adam Stieglitz, and the two applied their coursework and training to develop “Team Peru,” a graduate student group that focused on the problem of malnutrition by working with communities to build and manage greenhouses as a sustainable source of food. Seven years later, the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development, an NGO founded by Ebner and Stieglitz,

continues to work on agricultural projects, and has launched new efforts to empower women and help other NGOs increase their impact. Team Peru continues to offer students from all programs the opportunity to add value to their education by planning and implementing a project with the Andean Alliance. As one of their student volunteers put it, “Many times in academia things become too abstract. Team Peru was a great way to stay grounded to the reality of international development.”

Fulbright student Moslem Shah chose the International Policy and Development program at the Middlebury Institute because he felt it would fit his long term plan to help rebuild his native Afghanistan after three decades of war. At the age of 15, Moslem was arrested by the Taliban for teaching the girls in his community what he himself was learning in the school they were forbidden to attend. “I was lucky,” he says modestly, “because my father used all his connections and got me freed my second night in custody.” The school was shut down, but he kept his underground teaching practice—this time even further underground. Moslem has high hopes and ambitious plans to improve the quality of education in his beloved Afghanistan. One of his ideas is to replicate the Teach for America model to fit Afghani culture and Islam, and he has already created a business plan and assembled a team to help further this goal.

Mahmoud Abdalla teaches content-based courses in Arabic at the Middlebury Institute and, during the summer, directs the Middlebury School of Arabic.

Language plays a central role in every student’s experience at the Middlebury Institute. As a student in the Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation, and Language Education, you will master the skill of your language professions. As a student in the Graduate School of International Policy and Management, you will take courses in languages and intercultural competence that are integrated into your degree requirements, further honing the skills that will make you effective in global contexts.

The thread of language runs through all our programs.

In a recent survey of Middlebury Institute alumni, 85% indicated that learning a language added value to their careers. For graduates in translation, interpretation and language education, their languages ARE their careers. For policy and management graduates, language skills have also proved critical to career success.

• “My language studies have earned me more than $30,000 in additional ‘language pay’ during my tenure in the Foreign Service.”

• “Over the years, I have developed a facility in six languages, which is critical to my ability to enter into rural and village communities and establish direct lines of communications with local partners.”

• “I lived and worked in Taiwan for a year, facilitated a Sino-American Joint Venture, worked for 10 years writing and producing educational TV programs about China and

Chinese culture; my life has been endlessly enriched by my ability to communicate and forge relationships with Mandarin-speakers in the U.S. and around the world.”

• “After graduating from the Middlebury Institute, I worked for the International Activities Office of the US Environmental Protection Agency and was the Project Officer for projects in the Baltics and Russia. My Russian language skills were critical to my getting this position and to my effectively performing my duties while there.”

Beyond yoUrself In Language Development (BUILD) is a student-run organization that provides free beginning-level language classes to the entire community. BUILD was started in 2009 with two goals: to provide Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and Teaching a Foreign Language students with a low-risk environment to gain experience in the classroom, and to give all students the opportunity to begin learning a new language, practice skills that have become rusty over the years, or just have fun with a variety of languages.

Edgard Coly helps his students hone their French language skills through content-based language courses that touch on peace-building, public health, and human security, with a focus on Francophone Africa.

International Policy and Development professor Pushpa Iyer teaches courses in conflict resolution and recently launched the Center for Conflict Studies at the Middlebury Institute. She has led trips to Nepal, Sierra Leone and Cambodia so that her students can see, first-hand, the peace-building challenges facing post-conflict societies.

Kathi Bailey epitomizes the commitment of Middlebury Institute faculty to practice what they teach, and to contribute actively to their fields. One of the founding professors of our Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program, Kathi has trained teachers in 30 different countries, mentored dozens of Peace Corps Master’s International students, and serves as the president of The International Research Foundation for English Language Education.

Kent Glenzer holds a joint appointment in the Middlebury Institute’s MBA and MPA programs, and consults for organizations such as Oxfam, CARE, and Firelight. “I get ridiculously energized when people come together and devise new ways of thinking and acting on intractable problems.”

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages alumnae Jaala Thibault and Tara Bates were chosen by the U.S. State Department to serve as English Language Fellows in Afghanistan in 2010. Writing for the New York Times, Jaala describes her experience teaching in Kabul, where she continues to travel regularly to conduct teacher-training workshops. “Though I always knew I’d become a teacher, I never planned to use my ability to educate

as a tool for building nations. But then the attacks of September 11 happened—and just as they changed many lives, they changed my life, too.” She adds: “I desperately wanted to go there to help educate the girls and to learn about a culture that had been hidden for so long.”

Ravi Kurani, an MBA graduate, participated in the Middlebury Institute’s Frontier Market Scouts program. Hired by

Village Capital right after his FMS training, Kurani worked with a fair trade honey company in India to boost its sales by 50 percent and increase direct income to farmers by 20 percent in just a few months.

“Silicon Valley employers actively seek out Middlebury Institute graduates from the Translation and Localization Management program,” says Natalia Zoubko, a graduate from 2011 who was contacted by eBay and offered a management position shortly after graduation. She returned for the annual Middlebury Institute Career Fair to recruit more graduates for her employer. Emily Frye is another happy alumna of the program working in Silicon Valley, managing localization projects into 14 languages for Apple. Emily says that she feels the classes at the Middlebury Institute really prepared her for her position. “My understanding of computer assisted translation (CAT) tools, terminology management and the opportunity to have studied with a diverse group of people have all been very useful on a daily basis.”

Merit-Based ScholarshipsThe Middlebury Institute offers generous merit-based scholarships to U.S. and international students who demonstrate academic and professional excellence. To qualify, you must apply and be accepted to a degree program by specific deadlines. A separate scholarship application is not required – all admitted students are automatically considered. If you apply by one of the earlier deadlines, you will have a greater likelihood of receiving a merit award. go.miis.edu/merit

Need-Based GrantsThe Middlebury Institute also offers need-based grants that require a separate application and are awarded in addition to any merit-based scholarships. Students do not need to file for federal financial aid to be considered for Middlebury Institute need-based funds. The amount of the award depends on financial need and the availability of funds. Scholarships through PartnershipsThe Middlebury Institute has established several strategic partnerships to attract qualified U.S. and international students through agreements with the U.S. Peace Corps, Fulbright, the Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program, AmeriCorps, Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET), the Yellow Ribbon Program for U.S. Veterans, and many others.
