What if I don’t meet guaranteed admission guidelines?

Conditional Admission

Any student not meeting guaranteed admission requirements will be considered for conditional admission. The review will include all academic credentials as well as other special interests and skills, and other non-academic factors as explained on the Personal Statement Form.

Students admitted in this category will be expected to:

• remove high school deficiencies (if applicable) within the first 64 hours of enrollment

• maintain academic good standing as defined by University retention standards

• receive services from the University College Advising Center

• enroll in University 1010 the first semester of enrollment

Incoming freshmen ALREADY admitted under Conditional will initially be assessed for Academic Enrichment Program placement according to valid ACT/SAT scores. Those with ACT scores less than 18 (SAT of 450 or less) in English are required to take the COMPASS test. Those who have a test score of less than 19 (SAT of 460 or less), in Mathematics & Reading, are required to take the COMPASS test for placement purposes; otherwise, these students will be placed in appropriate courses. Permissible test scores are less than three years old from first day of class. COMPASS testing is required before students come to CUSTOMS and before they are allowed to register for classes

Aerospace (B.S., M.S., M.Ed.) The MTSU Aerospace Department is one of the largest in the nation and includes a first rate professional pilot training and airplane maintenance program.

Agribusiness & Agriscience (B.S.) Students from the School of Agribusiness and Agriscience routinely perform well above the average on the National Agriculture Achievement Exams. Student learning activities extend beyond the classroom--internships, farm laboratories, student clubs, and judging teams.

Biology (B.S., M.S., M.S.P.S.) The Biology Department enrolls every student on campus and last year the Biology faculty won all three major university awards - teaching, research, and service. They are home for a nationally recognized recycling program that provides scholarships to MTSU students.

Chemistry (B.S., M.S., D.A.) The Department of Chemistry offers D.A., M.S., and B.S. degrees (health professional and ACS accredited). Research areas include analytical, biochemistry, chemical education, computational, environmental, inorganic, materials, medicinal, organic and physical. Home of Phi Mu Delta (pre-professional club), award winning Chemistry Club, and National NQR Center.

Computer Science (B.S., M.S.)  The Computer Science Department was among the first undergraduate programs in the state of Tennessee to have one of its undergraduate programs (B.S. in Computer Science, Professional Computer Science Concentration) accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. The rigorous curriculum of both the Professional Computer Science Concentration and the Business Applications Concentration produce graduates who have excellent job opportunities.

Concrete Industry Management (B.S.) The CIM Department at MTSU is the first of its kind to integrate a technical education in concrete with the business and communication skills needed to advance in the industry. The program has since been expanded to four other universities nationwide. CIM offers a Bachelor of Science in Concrete Industry Management with concentrations in Production, Sales and Service or Concrete Contracting. Also, coming in fall 2012, an executive-style MBA for professionals across the nation.

Engineering Technology (B.S., M.S.) Engineering Technology has served as the home for the Russell Chair of Excellence in Manufacturing, the Environmental Science Program, and Construction Management. ET students design and build a number of vehicles each year for national competitions.

Environmental Science & Technology (B.S.) The Environmental Science and Technology (ES&T) program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is an interdisciplinary program involving the Departments of Agribusiness and Agriscience, Biology, Chemistry, and Engineering Technology. Five different concentrations are available (one proposed Fall 2010). The program, established in 1973 is administered by the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. Students have the option of participating in research projects and obtaining a variety of jobs when they complete their degrees; including, government, consulting, laboratory, and field.

Mathematical Sciences (B.S., M.S., M.S.T., M.S.P.S., Ph.D. C.S, Ph.D M.S.E., Ph.D. M.B.) Mathematical Sciences offers degrees in mathematics education, pure and applied mathematics, statistics and actuarial science. The math faculty is involved with the Advanced Placement Test, National Mathematics Standards, and in using technology to teach mathematics.

Military Science Since 1950, the MTSU Military Science department has produced numerous outstanding United States Army Officers. Committed to developing leadership and management skills through hands-on application, the "Blue Raider Battalion" serves as a distinct training and educational program for those who desire to excel either in the military or civilian sector.

Physics & Astronomy (B.S.) The Physics and Astronomy Department, established in 1995, places a strong emphasis on faculty-student interactions. The department requires an undergraduate research thesis for every physics major.

HOPE Scholarship

Award amount is $4,000 per year for full-time enrollment, and is prorated for enrollment of 6 to 11 hours.

Additional amounts are available for Merit and Aspire Supplement Awards, as indicated below.

Graduate of Eligible High School (according to TSAC requirements) must have at least a 21 ACT (980 SAT) OR cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Graduate of Home School or Ineligible Tennessee High School must have at least a 21 ACT (980 SAT).

GED graduate must have at least a 525 GED AND 21 ACT (980 SAT).

Student must enroll in eligible higher education institution no later than 16 months after high school graduation, home school completion, or GED test date.

Scores for ACT or SAT tests taken on a national test date during the 16-month sit-out period will be accepted; however, the ACT or SAT must be taken before the student is enrolled at a higher education institution.

Aspire Supplement

Award amount is $1,500 in addition to Tennessee HOPE Scholarship, for a total of $5500 per year.

Graduates of Eligible High School, Home School, or Ineligible High School must meet Tennessee HOPE Scholarship requirements (listed above) and the following income requirements:

Parent(s) of dependent student must have Adjusted Gross Income of $36,000 or less on FAFSA.

Independent student must have Adjusted Gross Income (including income of spouse, if applicable) of $36,000 or less on FAFSA.

GED graduates are not eligible for an Aspire Supplement.

HOPE Access Grant

Award amount is $2,750. 

Graduate of Eligible High School must meet ALL of the following criteria:

Have at least an unweighted 2.75 GPA,

AND Have an 18, 19, or 20 ACT (860-970 SAT),

AND Have an Adjusted Gross Income of $36,000 or less. (See Aspire Supplement for details.)

Grant is only available for first 24 attempted hours.

Student may become eligible for Tennessee HOPE Scholarship by meeting HOPE Scholarship renewal criteria after 24 attempted hours.

Home School graduates, Ineligible High School graduates, and GED applicants are not eligible for a Hope Access Grant.

Foster Care Grant

Award amount is difference between Cost of Attendance and total of all other grant and scholarship aid.

Graduates of Eligible High School, Home School, Ineligible High School, or GED must meet Tennessee HOPE Scholarship initial eligibility requirements (listed above) and the following requirements:

A child who was in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children's Services for at least one year since age 14. (The child may have been adopted after that time.)

Students must submit proof of status from Department of Children's Services to the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC).

TSAC will notify MTSU if the student is eligible for the grant.

Important DatesFor scholarships with December 1 deadlines, priority

consideration will be given to students who have submitted the required information and meet the

minimum academic requirements as of December 1, 2013.

However, students who meet the qualifications between December 2, 2013, and February 15, 2014,

may be considered if funding is available.

All year: Continue to focus on your grades. The lottery scholarship and some private scholarships will consider your GPA through the end of your senior year.

Fall: Continue to search for and apply for private and institutional scholarships.Take the ACT one more time, if needed. Take the SAT at least once; some students score higher on one test than on the other!Apply for admission to MTSU and submit test scores and transcripts by December 1 to be considered for MTSU academic scholarships. (Please Note: We will accept your ACT and/or SAT scores through the December test date, though these scores will arrive after the December 1 deadline.)

Submit a Buchanan Fellowship application by December 1. (Please Note: The Honors College will accept your ACT and/or SAT scores only through the October test date.)Attend MTSU's College Goal Sunday FAFSA Prep Workshop in January, and/or one of several College Goal Sunday FAFSA Assistance events in January or February.

Spring: File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is the application for federal grants and loans, the lottery scholarship, and other aid. File your FAFSA in early January to qualify for need-based aid, or by April 1 if you do not expect to receive need-based aid.

Submit a "Consolidated Application for Scholarships through Financial Aid & Scholarship Office" to be considered for a DREAM Scholarship or Foundation Scholarships awarded by the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office by February 15; check with your academic department to learn about scholarship opportunities and application requirements for students in your major. Submit scholarship acceptance forms or other required paperwork by the stated deadline.
