MIDDLE INDIGO – RURAL LIVING LEARING AND BEYOND
Ms McGrath
Ms Jo McGrath has been with our school for
the past three terms, filling in for Mrs Skate.
During her time with us, she has taken on the
role of Science Teacher, PE Teacher as well as
classroom duties in both classes. For any other
teacher starting out on their career, just one
class is enough let alone a whole primary school.
Jo has been very dedicated to our school and the
students. She has developed a relationship with
the students and staff and with the Middle
Indigo Community in general. She has worked
after hours and on her days off creating the Folk
Festival costumes as well as working on class
planning, school reports, and curriculum
development.
The staff and the students have greatly enjoyed
Jo’s time with us and wish her well with her
forth-coming travels and her continuing role at
Rutherglen Primary. As Jo is a resident of the
Indigo Valley, I’m sure we haven’t seen the last
of her! Good Luck Ms McGrath!
Principal Appointment
It is with great pleasure that I can finally announce
that the successful candidate for the position of
Principal at Middle Indigo is James Farley. This is a
provisional appointment and pending a 2 week
period will officially begin at the commencement of
Term 2. I’d like to thank James for all the hard work
and commitment he has shown in the past 15
months as Acting Principal and I am sure you will all
join me in congratulating and wishing him every
success in this new role. I would also like to thank the
Selection Panel for your tireless efforts in facilitating
the selection process, and to the School Council
members for your valued input. Congratulations Mr
James!

Beechworth Excursion
The whole school took off to Beechworth on
Tuesday to complete our term project on Explorers.
After a quick trip through the valley we headed to the
Burke Museum. This was named after William O’Hara
Burke of Burke and Wills fame. The students
participated in a treasure hunt and had a terrific sit
down chat and question session about Burke. Our
senior students were very knowledgeable about the
subject and impressed the museum director with
their answers and insights.
The Director then showed the students some of the
more precious museum pieces including a
boomerang that could be up to 300 years old.
Phoenix had the opportunity to hold this rare
artefact, an incredibly rare opportunity.

MIDDLE INDIGO – RURAL LIVING LEARING AND BEYOND
Next, the students decamped to the delights of the
Beechworth Honey shop. There we were treated to
honey tasting and a tour through the education
rooms. We learnt about the process of extraction,
pests and diseases that can effect honey production
and the risks to Australia’s bio- security. Then we let
the students loose in the shop – I sat outside! It was
too chaotic to watch!
Next, we compounded the sweetness of our
student’s by visiting the bakery and upping the sugar.
We walked up the hill to Mayday Hills. Here we
looked at the old asylum buildings and gardens and
had a good old fashioned play on the oval.
Mad Children at the ASYLUM!
It was a great day out and definitely expanded our
thoughts on the deeds of the explorers and gave a
great insight into our communities past…… as well as
a taste of its present.
Religious Education
Religious Education classes start up again next term.
RE is an opt in segment of the school curriculum.
Classes happen at 1:00pm on Tuesdays. Students will
still have a break after the classes.
Mrs Alison Lumb and Mrs Sandra Pooley will be
running both a P – 2 class and a 3 – 6 class. If you
wish for your child to participate, then please fill in
the attached form and return to school. There are
forms on the front desk if required.
Cross Country
Students are currently practising cross country
running out in the Valley. We are planning on holding
our cross country event on Friday 3rd of May. This will
involve all students having a run, with the older
students times being entered for regional
consideration. Families and friends are invited to
come along and help cheer on the students. More
info to come!
ANZAC Day
Middle Indigo will be represented by students at the
Barnawartha hall event. Students are also
encouraged to join in events at Chiltern or
Yackandandah if that is more convenient to their
families.
Our school representatives will be laying a wreath on
behalf of the school. We will also be hanging the
World War One Memorial board in our library and
the students will be discussing and working on ANZAC
related topics in class.
School Photo’s
School Photos are booked in for the 23rd May. Photo
info will go out families soon.
Canberra Camp
The senior students are heading to Canberra this year
for camp. The camp is booked for the first week of
term 4 – 9th – 1th October. At present the cost of the
camp, including all meals, bus, accommodation and
entries is $320. This may come down as Jan and I
review the budgets. I just wanted to give parents an
indicative budget. We will be participating with the
Wooragee Primary School on the camp, including a
number of build-up activities here and at Wooragee
in third term.
